[opensuse-factory] sata partition limit

I just tried to install 10.1 on this SATA system that was originally cloned from PATA when I bought a new system with I915/ICH6 and a faster CPU 17 months ago. Before the clone operation, 9.2 ran from /dev/hda16, Mandriva from /dev/hda7, Knoppix from /dev/hda15, and windoz and OS/2 and data occupied various other partitions. Now the 10.1 installer gives me these error messages: - WARNING: This system has at least one hard disk with a RAID configuration presented by the BIOS as RAID that is in fact software RAID. The following disks were detected as part of such RAID: /dev/sda /dev/sdb - The Linux kernel 2.4 supported some of these systems (like Promise FastTrack and HighPoint RocketRaid), but the Linux kernel 2.6 does not support them at all. If you install onto these disks, your RAID configuration and any data on the RAID will be lost. Refer to http://portal.suse.com to learn how to migrate to a Linux software RAID. - - Your disk /dev/sda contains 46 partitions. The maximum number of partitions that the kernel driver of the disk can handle is 15. Partitions numbered above 15 cannot be accessed. - Your disk /dev/sdb contains 19 partitions. The maximum number of partitions that the kernel driver of the disk can handle is 15. Partitions numbered above 15 cannot be accessed. - At the partitioning step, only those up to 15 were listed, and it offered to delete most (mostly OS/2, which it erroneously calls windoz) partitions. At that point I aborted the install, as I have all attempted Linux installs on this system. Surely people with SATA disks of upwards of 400G cannot be satisfied with SCSI's device (partition) name limit of 14. When is this going to be fixed. When is this problem going to be solved so that I can install where 9.2 was installed, or anywhere else for that matter? When is the kernel going to quit calling SATA SCSI? Wasn't it bad enough for the system to content with real SCSI devices mixed with USB devices without adding SATA into the mix? On http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.html there is at least one mirror that is not active anymore: Belgium > Telenet. mirrors.telenet.be/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/ I know that I should mail the webmaster, however I think it might be better if the people who keep themselves busy with the mirrors could look into that page themselves and see what and if anything needs to change. e.g. Are Need any mirrors be deleted or added? Is the <Architecture> still up to date? Also a link to download.suse.com and/or download.opensuse.org would be great. When I try to run konsole on OpenSUSE 10.2 Alpha 2 (2xXeon 3.0Ghz, 1GB memory, x86 kernel), it crashes after some lines have been outputted. I tried "ls" nine times and then it crashed. My homedirectory contains files enough to get 56 lines, which gives about 500 lines. However, the History setting is 1000 lines, so the buffer has not overrun, or has it? Email Server: able to add email address and manage email address including forward, multipop, content filter and email archive system (which every email can be copy to a system admin email, usually admin(a)domain.com) 3. SF2: need to be able to protect outgoing service. the important thing is: able to sort rule! i mean any packet must filtered by the order of the rule (same as what ipfilter does), currently "section: in SF2 not work like that. 4. SF2: integrated with realtime logging: admin can see what site/activity doing by the clients in the real time 5. SAMBA: can you povide as much as possible parameter as swat does? some important parameter such as "allow guest" not present here. 6. Many weeks ago, upgrading with smart, it replaced mDNSResponder with avahi-compat-mDNSResponder, and then, Digikam has hanged, any time I would to connect the cam. When some file on CD installation was damage then the installation STOP anymore. You can not press the Eject button, even point to other media. In Windows (sorry for who hate this OS, this is for example only), when installtion come to damage file then: 1. you can eject the cd and replace with good one 2. you can point to other media such as any drive that contain the good one, a floopy disk, or other cd drive attach to the pc. can you improve opensuse with this feature? the check cd feature is not a good solution and take too longer time to test every cd! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? [opensuse-factory] Packagage Groupings - From Selections in 10.1 to Patterns in 10.2

Currently in SUSE Linux 10.1 (and earlier releases) we use selections in YaST to group software and easily enable installation of related software. Our developers have enhanced the concept of selections and call it patterns. What are patterns? * patterns include a list of software packages to install * the list of software packages contains packages that are - required (must-have) - recommended (should-have) - suggested (may-have) * Patterns define a functionality the system should have. They do this by either directly naming required packages or by grouping of sub-patterns, or a combination thereof. This partitions the huge list of installed rpms into building blocks which can be combined (almost) at will. By listing each and every rpm in a (ideally: exactly one) pattern, this related rpms to functionalities. This in turn finally gives an answer to the often asked question: "Why is this package installed ?" * in the future we like to drive workflow with patterns as well, e.g. if you select the (imaginary) LDAP server pattern, the LDAP configuration workflow will be called during installation. * Patterns can be grouped into roles, like "Development" or "Desktop". * Patterns can require other patterns They have the same set of (possible) dependencies as packages have. So they can also obsolete (replace) or conflict other patterns. Or have language dependencies, etc. * Add-on products can have additional patterns * Patterns can be differentiated between top-level/user-visible and internal/non-user-visible patterns (a pattern might require others that are not visible) - these are implementation details of the patterns. Directly after 10.2 Alpha2, I'd like to switch to patterns. Instead of simply rewriting the existing selections to patterns, I would like to start basically from scratch and define with you which patterns we should have. Currently we have the following selections: * Graphical Base System * KDE Desktop Environment * All of KDE * GNOME System * Help and Support Documentation * Office Applications * Games * Multimedia * Voice over IP * Xen Virtualization * Simple Web Server with Apache2 * LDAP Server and Tools * Network and Server * Laptop * Mobile Computing * C/C++ Compiler and Tools * Kernel Development * KDE Development * GNOME Development * Tcl/Tk Development System * Java * Experienced User * LaTeX, SGML and XML * Fonts * Mono/CLR * Non-Open Source Packages As a first step for discussion I propose these roles and patterns: * Graphical Environments - GNOME Desktop Environment - KDE Desktop Environment - X Window System (with fvwm2) * Base Technologies - Base System (always installed) - AppArmor - Xen Virtual Machine Host Server * Development - C/C++ Compiler and Tools - GNOME Development - KDE/QT3 Development - Qt 4 Development - Linux Kernel Development - Version Control Systems * Primary Functions - File Server - Print Server - Mail and News Server - Web and LAMP Server - Internet Gateway - DHCP and DNS Server - Directory (LDAP) Server This misses some of the selections and introduces new ones. This is really a first step for discussion. I would like you to come up with better high-level proposals! Let's not discuss "we need this pattern as well" - but let's discuss and agree on the general framework and then let's discuss adding further patterns. Btw. we have a nice way of adding new, third-party patterns: Basically all you need is to have a lightweight add-on product that only has patterns, but no RPMs. So one could create his or her favourite package collections and make them available as an add-on source. Every repository can add patterns. Btw. >From 3 mohnts ago, I could'nt use audacity because with any version (1.24b, 1.3 beta, 1.3.1beta cvs), it hangs (precompiled or compiled by me). The last weekend, I debuguing it with ddd and gdb, and I found that the hang comes with triangle librarie from the ladspa plugins. Then I recompiled audacity without ladspa, and it not hangs any more. I tryed to compile ladspa, but I found that the last version is from dec 2002 (version 1.15), and the version compiled by suse, is 1.12. Then, i mean that this package are unmantained. Thanks

Hi, I'm currently a little bit disappointed of https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=192743 and its duplicate https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=193996 which is caused by a broken YOU for SUSE Linux 10.0. The background and a fix are available at http://people.opera.com/eddy/YaST/ReadMe.html and the bug is a frustrating one since I know some people who stuck with 10.0 because installing RPMs with YaST from Konqueror is not possible in 10.1, and now after this YOU it's broken for 10.0 as well. More generally, I'd like to know if it would be possible to do public tests for *all* YOUs (maybe except not-yet-disclosed security fixes). We had it in the past for a subset of selected packages like the libzypp and kernel YOUs, and it worked quite well so far. I remember some problematic YOUs in the past and now I just wonder if a different testing approach might eventually help improving the situation. The Fedora project seems to have a similar approach that could be used to borrow ideas from. [opensuse-factory] USB Storage device hotplug detection failure

Suse-10.2 Alpha2 ,any connections of a USB storage device ,in my case a Kodak Z740 camera does not pop up beautifully as it used to in 10.0/10.1 asking what do with the new hotplug The more troublesome thing is 2.6.16.13-4-default kernel does not show anything in dmesg when new usb storage devices are hotplugged. Every Camera/Pen Drive etc has stopped working. Btw is a SanDisk SD 1 GB Memory Card supposed to work with Opensuse or Linux in General, has anybody got it to work before because that memory card of my Camera has never resulted in anything in dmesg nor has it caused a popup saying ,new device what to do ? This is when it is really bad , I know it should work ,but it just doesnt , and this is where M$ makes it presence felt ,and i had to reboot into XP and all my photos are there... Hi, This is 2 days I have installed Suse 10.2 Alpha 2...and because of some error the KDM login screen is coming back again and again as i try to login as ordinary user `digz'.First the autologin failed and then on manually entering username/password..the login screen comes back repeatedly. The user root is able to login and KDE starts. My installation was standard with KDE.This is /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. ============================================== DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER="yes" DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN="digz" DISPLAYMANAGER_PASSWORD_LESS_LOGIN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AD_INTEGRATION="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN="auto" KDM_USERS="" KDM_GREETSTRING="" DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="SUSE" ============================================ Any idea how to sort this out ?? Just do the following as root: grep sshd /var/log/messages |grep "Invalid user"| \ awk '{print $NF}'|sort|uniq -c|sort -n As most people know, sshd attacks are very common. Also there are various tools out there that can be used to block these attacks. Would there be a possability to have such a thing included in 10.2?
