internet installation of Beta5 madness...

I was not successful at installing beta5 over the internet. I'll try again on March 3rd with beta6 but here are the problems I experienced with beta5: (1) Every time the boot disk booted up for i386, which is my system, I would get a message saying "Installation system does not match your boot medium. It may make your bug reports worthless" I have no idea what this meant, but hopefully the following is still useful... (2) figuring out which installation repository to point YaST to. I tried a) 204.152.191.7 (mirrors.kernel.org) /opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/ here I got software dependency problems, read as "Cannot solve dependencies automatically. Manual intervention is required" followed up by "This would invalidate OpenOffice_org-2.0.2_4.i586[http://204.152.191.7/open..." when I tried to select a few packages. so I gave up on this repository and went on to ... b) 66.184.207.32 (ftp.ale.org) /pub/mirrors/opensuse/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source here I got no software packages at all. It could not find any packages on the installation repository or something along those lines. c) 195.135.221.130 (download.opensuse.org) /distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source here I got the message "network error 403" and never got to the installation screen that I experienced with the above two repositories. This repository was a dud. (3) At one point, randomnly, when booting up the boot disk I got a X-mas Santa penguin screen... Out of the blue. Penguins were skating and moving all over. I was so shocked that the timer ran out and the system went back to booting the regular OS. (4) I'm starting to wonder if the internet installation repositories are working at all? Is this my problem to begin with? Either way, I'm willing to try beta6 when it comes out but if there is something fundamental I'm doing wrong with the internet installation then let me know. Benji

Monitor choice no longer available

Hi, Up until around 10.1 beta4, my monitor was always auto-detected and showed exactly what it was. With beta4 and beyond, it doesn't detect it anymore, because it's not in the list of available monitors anymore. It just shows it as a vesa monitor. It looks the same, but I like the warm fuzzies when it knows exactly what my monitor is. I was wondering if there was a reason this change, such as being non-GPL or something. It's an NEC MultiSync LCD 1735NXM. Thanks, Chad

Hardware database (Would be very useful)

All, Especially SuSE people, I forgot to ask something at the FOSDEM. I notice when i have a bug. That you (understandably) don't have the same hardware in the house. So i was wondering if it might be interresting to have a database with all hardware of all beta testers in it. So you can ask an other beta tester to do a test. I have currently a bug that most likely looks like a kernel bug. But I'm not 100% sure. Therefor it would be great if there would be someone around who could do the same test(s). XML File for repositories

On FOSDEM in the speed talks, I held a speed talk about an XML file for YaST and other repositories. The presentation can be found here: http://en.opensuse.org/XML_File_for_repositories until there is an official place for FOSDEM presentations. This discussion is about the layout of the XML file and also about what SUSE already has in place or is planning, so an easy integration is possible. So any feedback on that is welcome. An extremely basic proof of concept in PHP can be found on http://houghi.org/mirrors/main.php (DON'T USE THE DATA. It is not complete and most likely incorrect) the directory holds all the files and php files are copied as php.txt as well. So what we need is to define what the layout of the XML must be. What must go in it and what not. Any feedback is welcome. Example XML files and php pages for proof of concept can be sent directly to me. So please let all know what your ideas are. Bugzilla responses

What is the correct procedure if a bug is posted into bugzilla? I put in a bug and after a while it will be assigned. What must be done if you see that nothing is happening? e.g. 144614, 144620, 144616 and 144615 are open for a while. I don't want to nag in bugzilla and don't want to flood the people that are assigned to it wasting time with answeringmy stupid mails while they work on something more important.
