subfs dropped in 10.1 Beta 2

Hello all, During the IRC meeting from 2006-01-24 it was announced that subfs has been dropped. IRC log and minutes can be found at http://www.opensuse.org/2006-01-24-status-meeting and the timestap for the subfs issue begins at 19:47 >From the minutes: - subfs has been dropped and will be replaced by hal plus gnome-volume-manager (under GNOME) and some binary for KDE. non-KDE and non-GNOME users have to mount manually. They cant even put a line into /etc/fstab, so that a user can mount it. There was a consens that this is unacceptable. Action Item houghi: - start discussion about subfs replacement in non KDE/GNOME systems on opensuse-factory Questions that arise: - Should this be accepted or should it be delayed till a complete solution is given? - As the question came from an FAQ about having subfs disables, is there perhaps a better solution for everybody. Easy disableling subfs for those who want it and enabled for those who want that. - What are the implications of reversing the decision? What are the implications of going on as it is? Any other solutions or comments are welcome as well. Also bear in mind that some people might login over ssh and do not even have a windowmanager. houghi -- Lost interest? It's so bad I've lost apathy.

syslog-ng -> firewall

RAID1 problems in Beta3

Hi, Yesterday I tried to install Beta3 on a system having a software RAID1 and LVM. LVM works fine, RAID1 doesn't :-( I was upgrading a 10.0 system. I made a DVD from the 5CDs and I began to install it. Everything was fine. RAID was recognized, LVM also, no problem with upgrading from 10.0 to 10.1 Beta3, only a manual intervention for packages from community repositories (something normal). At the first reboot, unfortunately I got these: md: md0 stopped /init: line 479: 736 segmentation fault /sbin/mdadm -- assemble --scan $mdconf rootfs: major=9 minor=0 devn=2304 /dev/md0: unknown volume type /init: line 512: =: command not found Mounting root /dev/md0 mount: unknown filesystem type '' umount: /dev: device is busy umount: /dev: device is busy Kernel panic - not syncing: Attemted to kill init! After this, I tried to make a clean install. I formated the raid and install it again, again with no problems. At the first reboot, the same problem (the first reboot means before you set the root password, user accounts, networking, etc). Is this a known problem or should I report it to bugzilla? Confusing wording for network setup method

During installation, at network setup, there's the Use traditional method (Enable) and Use Network Manager (Enable) I find it terribly confusing with the "enable" thing. I always have to stop and think what does it mean and what will it do. I suggest a more specific link instead of just "enable". Like this: Now using traditional method (Enable Network Manager) and Now using Network Manager (Enable traditional method) Will add to bugzilla

NLD 10 presentation videos

Hi there, osnews.com has a news article on a presentation of the next Novell Linux Desktop with some videos which present the new features of the GNOME desktop used in NLD (http://www.linuxedge.org/?q=node/55) According to the current Novell Linux roadmap, Suse Linux 10.1 will be the basis for NLD 10 so the question is if we will see such features in one of the next Suse Linux versions too? 10.1 beta3 - a couple of initial observations

I'm installing to a machine with one IDE-drive with the following partitioning: /dev/hda1 - formatted for jfs, meant for /boot /dev/hda2 - swap /dev/hda3 - formatted for jfs, meant for / /dev/hda4 - exiting jfs for with existing /home The initial partioning proposal ignores /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda3, not unexpectedly, and proposes a setup that uses hda4 as an extended partition with hda5 and hda6. I delete hda5 and hda6, then attempt to edit hda4 in order to have it mounted at /home. The dialogue only allows me to change the cylinder boundaries of hda4. Also, when I hit "cancel" on this dialogue, it still warns me that I have changed the boundaries etc. ... - though I clearly haven't. To be able to instruct the installation to mount hda4 on /home, I had to reload the partition-table. I don't know if this is intended behaviour. Boot loader: The initial proposal for a GRUB setup contains an entry for a XEN kernel, whereas the proposal for a LILO setup does not. I haven't played with XEN at all, so I don't know if it's meant to be in the boot-menu or not. Installation summary (or whatever it is called): It's the screen with the main items listed: System, Bootloader, Software, Default runlevel etc. It seems to be lacking keyboard-shortcuts for the tabs "Overview" and "Expert". /Per Jessen, Zürich

Firefox plugins: where are they now, in 10.1beta3?

Before 10.1 the firefox plugins were symlinks in the firefox/plugins directory. Now, in that directory (/usr/lib/firefox/plugins) there is only the null plugin. Yet, about:plugins shows flash, acrobat, java. How are they located now, in 10.1? I ask because I have a problem with not displaying PDFs from firefox in beta3. In about:plugins there's dragon egg and acrobat reader. But I still don't get any .pdf displayed in browser. I'd like to remove dragon egg/acrobat and see what happens. In any case, it's still a bug.
