Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. [opensuse-factory] How can calibre be allowed access through YaST firewall?

Unlike rsync, or KDE Connect, there is no option to automatically allow the Calibre ebook manager to open ports so external devices can connect to it. So far, my solution has been to disable the firewall before connecting my device to Calibre via the Calibre Companion app on Android. For those unfamiliar with the process, Calibre Companion can sync ebooks from the desktop's library to the Android device's library, thus eliminating the need for wires and further organization of books. If I know I am using port 9090 for Calibre, is there a way to allow this connection in the Firewall? Has anyone else attempted this setup? [opensuse-factory] Use pvops-enabled kernel for Xen (fate#315712)

Hi, you have probably noticed that the SUSE virtualization developers have been working on porting features from the kernel-source patches.xen series to the upstream Xen implementation. This mostly works nowadays, so at the SUSE Labs Conference last month, we agreed to finally get rid of kernel-xen in Factory and instead use kernel-default with CONFIG_XEN (the mainline option) enabled. I prepared a branch on github https://github.com/michal42/kernel-source stable-noxen which does exactly this. Test packages are building here: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:michal-m:kernel-stable-noxen The kernel boots and works on my machine, both on bare metal and under the hypervisor (*), but there is some integration work to be done before it can be submitted to Factory: - The installer needs to cope with kernel-xen not available and choose kernel-default. Something like the attached patch should fix it (untested). - perl-Bootloader: Right now, it creates a Xen multiboot entry if the kernel is named -xen, otherwise it creates a regular linux entry. Create both entries if the Xen hypervisor is installed? - kernel-xen needs to be dropped from the patterns, but that's trivial - We have been building a kernel-obs-build-xen package for the OBS workers, which now disappears. Of course, there is lot more work to be done in making the xen -> pvops transition seamless in all corner cases. But that should not be a barrier to pushing the kernel to factory. (*) With the -default kernel, I do not see the kernel messages on the serial console with kernel /boot/xen.gz com1=115200 console=com1,vga module /boot/vmlinuz-4.2.2-0.g980fcdb-default ... console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200 while I see them with kernel-xen. [opensuse-factory] Is there a problem with "kernel-syms" at OBS

Oracle just released VirtualBox 5.0.12. When I tried to do the normal local test build with osc, I get the message "unresolvable: nothing provides kernel-pv-devel = 4.3.0-2 needed by kernel-syms, nothing provides kernel-xen-devel = 4.3.0-2 needed by kernel-syms". Removing the "BuildRequires: kernel-syms" line allows the build to get past this point, but it fails later. Any suggestions or comments? [opensuse-factory] VA-API support in Mesa and chromium video acceleration

There had been a prior attempt to enable VA-API support in Mesa (back in Feb 2015), but it was reverted due to a build dependency cycle. The cycle was caused by: libva -> Mesa-libEGL-devel, Mesa-libGL-devel Mesa-libva -> libva-devel I decided to follow the format of libvdpau-va and libvdpau-va-gl packages. Their source seems to be broken up so it was probably natural to break the package up like that. For libva I split off a linked package called libva-gl. - libva: builds everything except gl related - libva-gl: builds libva-egl1 and libva-glx1 This changes the dependency cycle to the following libva -> [nothing mesa related] libva-gl -> Mesa-libEGL-devel, Mesa-libGL-devel Mesa-libva -> libva-devel As you can see this solves the cycle issue. The remaining concern I have is that the Mesa libva driver only generates one file: /usr/lib64/dri/gallium_drv_video.so. When utilizing (for example with vainfo) one needs to specify LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME. LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=gallium vainfo On intel cards the libva support is provided by a separate (already existing package) instead of through gallium. The driver file it provides is named appropriately that it should just be picked up. Having to set the environment variable seems sub-optimal and is even documented on arch wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VA-API) Instead providing symbolic links for each of the drivers seems to properly fit the paradigm used by vdpau and base drivers. For example creating the following works on my radeon setup. radeonsi_drv_video.so -> gallium_drv_video.so Setting the environment variable is troublesome: 1) where to set it 2) would need to test for other drivers installed (like intel) Instead it seems like the symbolic links are the way to go. If agreed they could either be added directly in .spec %install, or patched to make install (and perhaps upstreamed). Which seems like the most appropriate solution? I'll hop in #dri-devel and perhaps mesa-dev list and get their thoughts. Finally, I spent many hours searching around the interwebz to figure out the history and state of chromium video acceleration via VA-API. - vdpau is not supported and issues about it have not gone anywhere - va-api works on chromeos so the code is there - support was temporarily enable by intel commit, but quickly reverted There is a out-of-tree patch to change the build flags to look for LINUX instead of CHROMEOS and a tweak to remove the hard coded paths and allow for libva discovery. I managed to get the patch to apply after forward porting it and branching my patched package to build chromium-ffmpeg patch on packman build service (pmbs). Once all the components were installed locally I was able to start chromium and confirm it worked by playing a 4k video on youtube. The 4k video has the most noticable cpu usage and it was clear it dropped significantly. I also used gallium hud to verify increase gpu usage. The end result was the video played the same as if downloaded (via youtube-dl) and played locally in vlc!! Some notes: - installed h264ify chrome extension to force html5 video to use h264 codec instead of h265 or vp9 which are not supported by VA-API yet - previously flipped two flags in chrome while testing a while back - Override software rendering list - Enable GPU rasterization -> enabled I can not set LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME and chromium reverts back to extra cpu usage (also comepare with google-chrome which doesn't have va-api). I need to verify if the patch makes that redundant (I believe it does). Otherwise, it would be good to add that to the patch or change the default values shipped in openSUSE chromium package. My plan going forward then was to add recommends Mesa-libva to chromium along with the patch and submit an SR once the rest of the dust settles. HI guys, is there a easy way to install sun jsdk on opensuse/leap ? Are 2 days that I'm trying on 13.2 but at the end, there is always something that does not work. There are dozen of tutorial, forum thread, video, script but they are outdated not working. There are tutorial for Leap too so things are not better. I know that the sun jdk cannot be shipped with the distro. OpenJdk is not the answer. What about at working spec file ? Or an src that download jdk from sun website and rebuild it locally ? Do we want to be one of the worst distro for working with java ? Hi/ I wanted to revive Ardour (digital audio workstation) and managed to push some new needed libraries in multimedia:libs project. So here is one of them: suil It is a library for wrapping non-native GUI applications to be embedded and displayed inside host window (using XEmbed). Currently supports Gtk 2, Qt 4, and X11 I am willing to push this to factory to eventually make Ardour available there too. I can do the maintenance of the suil in the multimedia:libs devel project. Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers, This is the last review you will get this year and it spans actually two weeks this time, as I missed sending out the one last week on December 25th. Shame on me! So, the two weeks gave us 5 Snapshots – some had to be discarded due to issues with systemd (more on this below). What did the snapshots give you? * A long awaited fix in PHP5 that helped us properly rebuild the horde* stack * The release notes should now actually talk about Tumbleweed * PackageKit 1.0.11 – minor fixes in the zypp backend, giving the zypp stack higher priorities in order to ensure we first get an updated zypp stack, before other updates * Linux Kernel 4.3.3 (with kernel-xen merged into kernel-default) * QEmu 2.4.0 * Xen 4.6 * LibreOffice 5.0.4 * Wine 1.8 – Now no longer beta * Mozilla Firefox 43 It’s a pleasure to see that we all use the well deserved christmas break to fully work on openSUSE. The changes we got the last weeks are far from just minor packages here and there (some were in stagings for quite some time). But that’s not all of course: the next snapshot is just finishing the build (it is labeled 20151229, which will be the last before we jump to the next year numbering). This is actually one many of you have been waiting for, as it will bring * Plasma 5.5.1 * KDE Framework 5.17.0 * The all new Tumleweed Branding package (bootsplash, backgrounds). There are some minor glitches, but it’s a nice gift to celebrate the new year with (the build/test of the snapshot will still take a while, so it won’t hit mirrors before tomorrow) Now, with so much great stuff already released and just ready to be released, you wonder if there is still stuff in the Stagings? you bet there is: * Systemd 228: this actually already passed stagings once but needed to be reverted (that’s why some snapshots could not be released). Any user updating from 13.2 to Tumbleweed with this version of systemd integrated would result without a working network. Not something we wanted to see. (IMHO "the filename contains a wrong version numbrer" isn't a reason, but maybe that's just my opinion.) I'd just keep the original name even if it contains a "wrong" version number because a) it avoids superfluous noise in the diff (which also means small changes in the patches could go unnoticed in the review) b) I'm lazy ;-) and c) I wouldn't include a version in a patch name from the beginning. I noticed that you also removed some upstreamed patches, and I'm happy to see that. If I understand correctly, installing leap (OS 42.1) requires the hard drive to be a GPT type partition table. Since I have four different distributions (windows & linux) on this PC how would changing the partition table to GPT affect the boot process for multiple distros? I was curious whether anyone managed to get the Steam Controller working as an input device in openSUSE? The latest SteamOS update allows the controller to control the mouse in desktop mode. I can picture using it as a slideshow controller if it is able to directly function as a mouse as well.

hiya There seems to be a slight increase in junk appearing on the screen as windows open. I've just had a really strange display of data as vivaldi booted up (i know its beta software but its a strange example). i only use vivaldi on this user login for tech sites but this time i actually had data displayed from a site i visit on a different user login and using a different browser. I use different user logins for different activities. I do get junk data displayed on all my user logins, things like the Software Updater show rubbish before displaying the correct window data. It also happens a lot between login (kdm) and the desktop and when i logout. Hi, I had written last year about my tool https://maintainer.zq1.de/ but it has seen some improvements recently. Initially it was meant as a help for screening openSUSE bugs on bugzilla and getting them to the right people. You can ask it about things like "bash", "ls", "/usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav", or "Mesa(x86_64)" and it will find out which package you are interested in (if it is in Factory). I fixed bug #1 about not being able to handle multiple results (e.g. two packages provide "python" or "httpd") but I also extended it to know about package versions in other Linux distributions. I managed to support most relevant actively maintained distributions, which is opensuse gentoo archlinux altlinux centos fedora mageia debian ubuntu slackware making around 8 different base-distributions And that made me think once again of our 2011-04-01 joke about the Canterbury Project and how many people liked the idea of different distributions working more closely together. At least now there is a place for packagers to quickly check out how other distributions are solving things, because I link to their package search, which usually allows to view their patches and spec-file or equivalent. We might even promote that tool (or a task-focused derivative of it) towards maintainers of other linux distributions because they certainly could benefit as well from not always having to re-invent the wheel. What do you think? How could I improve my tool? more than 5 hours trying success after success on same machine in 13.1 13.2 42.1 Mageia 5 Only in Mageia was sound actually easy to configure (via MCC). 42.1 was only slightly harder (via YaST2). 13.2 was quite hard, required replacing phonon-backend-vlc with phonon-backend-gstreamer. 13.1 wouldn't work either, seemed to have same only temporarily and only in yast2 behavior/obstacle as TW until after replacing phonon-backend-vlc with phonon-backend-gstreamer and a reboot. I tried TW for a while without Packman enabled, later enabled it to try to install SMPlayer and VLC. At first I excluded all *pulse*. In desktop settings -> phonon audio & video, the only sound device listed is default, no mention of any intel device as in other releases or yast2. Deleting Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) and re-adding it either quick or normal in YaST2 always produces sound when configuring, but it doesn't survive reboot, and never works in K*5 or SMPlayer. Eventually I tried advanced, including a click on reset, instead of quick or normal, and it has stuck so far through two reboots. One possible clue: nothing providess libdbus-1.so.3(LIBDBUS_1_3)(64bit) needed by vlc-noX-2.2.1-299.1.x86_64, which remains even after getting KDE to produce sound. [opensuse-factory] What's the best alternative to Multisystem?

Unfortunately, the Multisystem program that allows one to easily create a USB drive with multiple live-ISO images can only be installed on Debian-based systems. http://liveusb.info/dotclear/index.php?pages/install Is there an alternative for rpm-based systems anyone can recommend that also allows one to easily install and run multiple ISOs on a USB drive?

[opensuse-factory] Leap debug repo out of sync

Hello All, Konsole started throwing a Bus Error on me yesterday so I enabled the debug repos and installed konsole-debuginfo package to debug the issue and gdb tells me the wrong version is installed and to install konsole-debuginfo-15.08.3-3.1.x86_64, yet only konsole-debuginfo-15.08.2-1.1.x86_64 is available in the update repo. A quick google search of konsole-debuginfo-15.08.3-3.1.x86_64 shows the package is in a few of the update/leap/42.1-test/ mirrors, but I'm guessing these are out of sync. [opensuse-factory] Leap:42.1 kid3 is built against qt4/kde4

Hi, I've discovered that kid3 in Leap was built against kde4/qt4 due to a "%if %{suse_version} > 1320" without the extra " || 0%{?suse_version} == 1315 && 0%{?is_opensuse} == 1" which is what's needed to include kf5/qt5 in the build. This means that a Leap user with kde5 will pull in unnecessary packages and kid3 won't appear as it should. I've fixed this and it's on it's way to factory but does this warrant a Leap:42.1 update?
