I have a problem with the HDMI port to a monitor. I am loosing the LHS of the display. It is about 4 or 5 character in size. Does any one have any ideas on this. [opensuse-factory] MATE 1.5.x - inclusion in openSUSE and oS:Factory

Hi all, I would like to request information which I believe that a few people here can help me with. I've currently made X11:MATE:Factory which now holds around half of the packages of MATE 1.5 (the missing ones are currently being ported to DBus/GSettings and should be available during the next 2 weeks). Everything currently is running smooth with 1.5 (not all features are currently available yet). There is also on that repo a pattern, mate-desktop-basic, which should install the minimum MATE components required and is being made having in mind performing a MATE install on a GNOME LiveCD and to use the GNOME3 components. Now my big question is: what do I need to do to get MATE Desktop supported by /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager ? NOTE: my patch to implement support for mate in portland/xdg-utils has been accepted upstream, and has landed already on 12.1 and 12.2! I have also opened a bug report to request X11:MATE:Factory to be flagged as development project for MATE in oS:Factory so I can start submitting packages for reviewers. [opensuse-factory] New fdupes and %fdupes behavior in Factory

Hi all, the fdupes package got a new switch -p/--permissions, where it won't mark files with different ownership and security bits as duplicates (bnc#784670). I've already took the time, upgrade it to the latest 1.5.0-PR2 and adopted all patches from Debian. There is one difference - we have a patch sorts the output according filename, but upstream sorts according mtime and I did not port our patch. But I don't thing it will cause any troubles. Add to the subject the tag "RFC: Guidelines change" * discuss the change * if the change gets accepted by packagers and reviewers, update the wiki pages. Acceptance means: No strong objections within 14 days of the postings. * if the change can be algorithmically enforced, a rpmlint check is proposed. * the packaging guidelines team will send a monthly email to opensuse-announce and opensuse-packaging mailing lists to announce changes to the policy (only if there are changes to be announced) * the packaging guidelines team will support the process and make a decision in case of conflicts. Hi, all, Before 12.2, when we were still using bootsplash package, there's a "feature" that we can have a very cute background in runlevel 3. This is no more in 12.2 with plymouth. Because the background is implemented by a set of kernel patch, bootsplash package and bootsplash-branding-openSUSE. (We have a ready kernel and a ready bootsplash-branding-openSUSE.) Since it's been something existed for almost 5 years. I do really miss it. So is it possible we find a way to get it back? [opensuse-factory] Removing syslog from the default patterns - wasn't this a completely pointless discussion?

Just in case no one else has noticed - there is absolutely no (0, zero) benefit to anyone (user/admin/developer/packager/whoever) in omitting syslog from the default pattern/install. Yet it was suggested and we have been discussing it for quite some time now. I submit it should never have been suggested and certainly not discussed without someone arguing _why_ it is of benefit to the end user and hence worthwhile doing. I think the suggestion was completely pointless and in the end only caused unnecessary consternation among those openSUSE users that have a use for syslog. It was developed internally for Banco do Brasil as an alternative to x3270 and commercial options at the time, and has Paul Mattes (original x3270 author) "blessing" and invaluable help. It should now have (at least) 100,000 users around the country. This includes Banco do Brasil's own employees, Caixa Econômica Federal (another large state-owned bank). Since it's been released to the public via the Federal Government Public Software Portal in 2009, it has gained traction and spread throughout other regional government offices and private businesses worldwide. Hi, I am using Linux abbaton.ucd.ie 3.6.1-1-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 10 19:28:30 UTC 2012 (2a321c4) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux but what I report it happened on all 3.6 version of kernel and maybe 3.5 but I jumped directly from 3.4 I observed that my wireless card (broadcom with the wl) driver sees networks only in certain reproducible situations... for example one of them is like follows. I start the computer the driver seems loaded... the eth1 device is created but it cannot scan any network... I put the computer to sleep... I wake it up... and all the networks appear and I can connect and use the wireless as expected... I was trying to understand what are the differences and what can be the cause of this behaviour... I did a lsmod and sorted the modules loaded in the two situations and they seem to be very different... Wicd is an open source software utility to manage both wireless and wired networks for Linux. Wicd is split into two major components: the daemon, and the user interface. These two components communicate via D-Bus. I maintain wicd on network:utilities devel project. Wicd is a python software, it seems to be in conflict with networkmanager and others ( but who needs to have several network manager ?). It's a great alternative to networkmanager, it's light with basic functions. Wicd is already functionnal. What do you want to mean with "What are your plans going forward with wicd?" ? A replacement for laptop-mode-tools. "A tool that performs monitoring and adaptive configuration of the system according to selected profile. [...] Profiles contains various sysctl/sysfs settings and optionally a script that is run on profile activation/deactivation. This is called static tuning. We try to keep the database of tunings up-to-date with latest kernels. The profiles also contains settings for various tuned plugins that tune the system dynamically. Each plugin can connect to various sensors. Currently there are plugins for CPU, disk, ethernet and FSB. For example the ethernet plugin change the ethernet speed according to previous network load. System profiles are located in /usr/lib/tuned. You can create your own profiles that can also include and override settings from system profiles. Your custom profiles can be put into /etc/tuned and has higher priority in case of conflict. For details see man page of tuned.conf. You can also create your own profiles from powertop suggestions. For example if you want to create profile/my-profile/ that will implement all powertop suggestions that are relevant on your system run: powertop2tuned my-profile This command will create new profile in /etc/tuned/my-profile and will include settings from your previous profile. To be safe all tunings suggested by powertop are initially disabled. You can selectively enable them by going through /etc/tuned/my-profile/script.sh and uncommenting the appropriate lines. You can switch to this new profile by: tuned-adm profile my-profile" Laptop-mode-tools has some problems with systemd and will be at terms incompatible with opensuse. Tuned could be a great alternative to. I already work on this one and it works fine. Can I submit tuned on a devel repo like base:system, whose is developped laptop-mode-tools ? Best regards. [opensuse-factory] VGA screen problem after download of 28 new xf86- input and video drivers

After last week download of 28 new xf86- input and video drivers my VGA mode was changed into 1289x1024 from my favorite 1024x768. Found nowhere a way to change my screen setup so I changed the mode 31a into 317. With this mode I found that everything seemed to work except kmail. In the message list the message of choice did not show in one color but showed three strong color which made reading the text in that line practically unreadable. Same as in the 31a mode, both 16 bit) as I found out later. The read messages in the message list faded away an could only made readable by going over the messages. Changes to mode 316 (15 bit) brought me a normal colored message list except it did not change the behavior of fading messages after reading them. Made a screen snapshot of this problem. Started sampling information about modes and screen resolution on the opensuse list and have gathered following information: I am running openSUSE 12.3 Milestone 0 (i586) Kernel: 3.6.0-rc7-1-desktop KDE Development Platform: 4.9.2 "release 511") I have a 17" cathode monitor with following specs: Display Height 768 Max hor. freq. 61 Max vert. freq. 90 Min hor. freq. 31 Min vert. freq. 50 Resolution Height 768 Vert, freq. 76 Width 1024 lscpi tells me: VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 65x/M650 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter I have used and found the same problem with LXDE and Icewm as in KDE4 xrandr gives following info: Failed to get the size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 Default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x0mm 1024x768 76.0' My question, why was my screen mode changed after the new x86 drivers into a screen mode far out of the possibilities of the monitor and what is still missing in order to get a normal working kmail.
