Hello, I prepared updated syslog-ng packages with the close supervision of Marius Tomaschewski, the maintainer of the syslog-ng package. They are available in home:czanik in the openSUSE BS. I would like to see these packages included in Factory, to replace the ancient 2.0 syslog-ng, but MT seems to have disappeared (no response to e-mails in the past two weeks). Questions: - it works fine on my machines, but could anybody else test it? - what is the proper way to get syslog-ng updated in factory, if the maintainer seems to be unavailable? - I have now both 3.0 and 3.1 packages there, called syslog-ng and syslog-ng31. The ultimate goal is to include 3.1. Should I drop the current syslog-ng package and rename syslog-ng31 to syslog-ng? Forward this from the linux-xfs list, in hoping that decision-makers will consider XFS as the default suse OS install choice. It continually bests other file systems in optimized configuration performance tests and these new improvements sound like they only add more speed to the equation. For nearly all systems, disk speed is the bottle neck, so using the best solution possible should be strongly considered the default choice for all users -- regardless of 'political' concerns (which seem to often over-rule practicality, unfortunately). Linda p.s. I am not part of the xfs project. I've just used it with open suse (or previously, Suse) since ~ 2002 and have never regretted it. Current filesystem read rates using XFS are about 1GB/second on sustained multi-gigabyte reads. (Other mount-options in use both before and after the "delaylog" option: noatime,nodiratime,nobarrier) That's a lot given that XFS was the fastest performing file-system for this application already. It's also a promising result regarding stability, as several other tests (using e.g. reiser4 or ceph) in the past led to crashes in the same benchmark scenario. For build-compare, we compare that the files are the same of the current build and the last build - and thus throw away the new build if they are the same. For this we can ignore all timestamps. Fellow developers and users, just a heads-up: moments ago I have submitted a new Python version 2.7. This version contains many new and interesting features, and only a small chance of breaking existing code: no backwards-incompatible changes, and no big changes worth mentioning. For more details see [1]. There is one thing notable for people who write or maintain software that embeds Python: the new function PySys_SetArgvEx [2] does the job originally done by PySys_SetArgv, but closes a nasty security problem with the latter [3][4]. Most software should be fixed by now, but please review your packages anyway. have fun m. Hi, I plan to publish the first 11.4 milestone this week. The changes aren't that big (for once we still have 2.6.34 kernel), but we have a new libzypp media backend and new gnome and kde major versions, that should suffice for a new milestone. We have still > 60 failing packages, but nothing I would consider out of control - still it would be good if more would look around and fix left and right and/or do version updates of packages they care for. Feel free to bookmark the build service URL behind http://preview.tinyurl.com/2wzh836 The polished roadmap I will push into the wiki this week, I decided against any change in the milestone counting, but michl and me agreed to always talk about "Milestone X of 6" when we talk about milestones in writing. Hi everybody, Lately I observe that zypper and yast try to install (as recommended) kernel-default on my system. I currently run kernel-desktop, at the latest version as published in Factory. How can I find out what tries to pull in kernel-default? "zypper inr" only tells me it wants to install it, but not why. zypper inr --debug-solver creates some nice nifty xml and .gz files, but I seem not able to look for the right things there :) any pointers are appreciated. Hey Group; Someone in amarok's email list attempting to figure out my Amarok problem and suggested this. Along with FlightGear (self compiled), Blender and amarok fail in KDE4. And this was from a DVD load. I very much feel it is a KDE4/DBUS problem in 11.3 recent version. All of them worked on the last version. as root "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" which shows hundreds of errors. Error from a command line as a user> amarok KCrash: Application 'amarok' crashing... sock_file=/home/donn/.kde4/socket-m1l/kdeinit4__0 <unknown program name>(6945)/: Communication problem with "amarok" , it probably crashed. Hi, Not much news, but I put a first scretch of an 11.4 roadmap here: http://www.suse.de/~coolo/opensuse_11.4/ But I'm thinking about leaving out Milestone1 (which of course would actually mean Milestone7 is Milestone6 ;) - mainly because I'm on vacation in august, but I know many more are. As the feedback for the 11.3 release was pretty small I did the 11.4 roadmap very much based on the 11.3 data - with a bit more room around new year. We'll see how this works out - KDE 4.6 should at least fit perfectly for the last milestone and I have not yet seen plans for the release after GNOME 3.0, so I don't know - but I guess 11.4 will have GNOME 3.0.X. Amorok crash from a konsole (icon or any other way). I have tracked out that one passed version reason was openSuSE substituting /usr/lib/xine with two versions ( fixed that problem ). This is a DVD loaded 11.3 and not even upgraded with zypper or yast2. It is a i686 running as a i586 and has many NVIDIA chips for Ethernet, audio, EIDE and AGP GS7600 video. You might also include Blender 2.49b fails and self compiled Flight Gear 2.0 will not run. I've just done some experiment booting with /usr mounted via NFS, it basically works but there are some issues. A major issue seems to be that nothing provides the $remote_fs facility, I think this could be done using a dummy script which requires all remote filesystems such as nfs and cifs. Any better ideas where to put that? The following init scripts (in a standard install) have some issues: * boot.storage-fixup: requires /usr/sbin/storage\-fixup, /usr/sbin/dmidecode, /usr/bin/sg_inq on /usr * either skip when /usr is not available or move /usr/sbin/storage-fixup, /usr/sbin/dmidecode, /usr/bin/sg_inq to /sbin * boot.startprerun: requires /usr/bin/staprun * fails gracefully, optional * boot.cycle: requires /usr/sbin/grub * move /usr/sbin/grub to /sbin * SuSEfirewall2_init fails, needs iptables in /usr * change nfs to explicitly call "SuSEfirewall2_init start" after mounting /usr so it gets run as early as possible * dbus: service files in /usr/share/dbus-1/ not available * dbus seems to discover these when needed later * haldaemon: fails without /usr * will die anyway, require $remote_fs * cifs: wants en_US locale * require nfs to ensure /usr is mounted Regarding udev I have not been able to find any script dependencies on /usr and I'd be glad to hear from the maintainers where the actual problems are. I also noted that some essential shell utilities from coreutils get installed in /usr/bin rather than /bin which causes init scripts to fail. According to what criteria are the utilities ssplit between /usr/bin and /bin? Hi list, I found an machine that is kind of obsolete and I want to install factory on it so that i can help submitting some bugs. However the wiki-pages aren't any help atm, same goes for the old-en wiki. That's why i'm turning to you. How do I go about getting a factory install? Do I go with a 11.3 install add a specific repository and do zypper dup or is there something more to it than that? Hey Group; Even before the bootsplash from a icon amarok just stops. Hi! I am a subscriber to the openFATE mailing list. Of late there seems to be one person identified by the name jpxviii jpxviii who has been going around changing the status of all feature reports [even the done ones] to open for openSUSE 11.4 and HackWeek V, as well as changing the titles of features without any knowledge of what it is supposed to mean. For example, about this feature https://features.opensuse.org/301038 he changes the title from "Improved performance in main menu, app browser and control center" to "Improved performance in main menu, app, browsers and control center" which is ridiculous. I understand that this might not be right m-l to complain abt features.o.o but could somebody please look into this, or at least point me to where I ought to report this so that some action is taken against this sort of blatant spamming? --- Mail for bigger audience sent to -factory mailing list... --- We're preparing Zeitgeist 0.5.0 for inclusion into Factory, but this package not depends on python-rdflib, which already does exist in devel:languages:python. A direct mail to the users listed as 'maintainer' (using osc maintainer of course) did not yield any result yet and I'm not 100% sure if the users are willing to forward the package, as this gives them the 'maintainer responsability' for a released product (or to be released - 11.4). Could anybody with sufficient privileges on devel:languages:python please submit python-rdflib to openSUSE:Factory? Yet they works I loaded rpm off my DVD, zypper and again off yast2 with the same result. Hey Group; Where is it set that DBus has now permission to see or use a new version of Amarok? I do download and compile many programs. Like a git of Amarok. openSuSE is becoming a headache or at least KDE4 / DBus is. I am beginning to see Linux becoming to secure when a user can not work with external software. Based on problems thing will not compile and depends fails. I do realize that QT and others upgrade or change. However, why does DBus and other software need to be concerned with registered software won't work. I do come from the days when many small programs are better than big ones. Hey Group; Apparently my DVD load lost something with RPM. I used yast2>software and reloaded it which fixed the problem. So, either the DVD version was ? or then yast2 version works. Anyway rpm -qa worked like it used to. [opensuse-factory] Regression - icon sorting on KDE 4.5 Desktop folder?

I'm not sure if this is me or a general regression. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=227157 is marked as fixed in KDE4.4.1. I'm seeing the same behavior again as described in the initial bug report. To reproduce: - Right-click > Folder View Settings > Display > Sorting > Unsorted - Do something that forces a refresh of an icon/file in the desktop folder (eg edit and save an OOo document stored on the desktop).. A simple right-click > Refresh View doesn't trigger the problem. As soon as that refresh happens, the desktop icons are auto-sorted. Double checking shows that Folder View Settings is still on Unsorted, and Right-click > Icons > Sort Icons shows none of the radio buttons selected (ie it's in unsorted mode). Is anyone else seeing this in 4.5.0? Is this best as an upstream KDE.org bug or an openSUSE bug? Hi all, The GNOME team is doing the last few steps to completely remove beagle from Factory: beagle is dead upstream nowadays, and we can't maintain it ourselves. FWIW, GNOME is moving to tracker and KDE is using strigi (I guess). I filed delete requests for the packages, and the last thing that is potentially blocking this from happening is that kdebase3, kerry and kio_beagle depend on libbeagle. I'd appreciate if someone could fix this :-) If you notice anything that uses beagle in some way (a patch in a package, for example), feel free to ping us and we'll help you fix this. I have machines (low-end servers) I setup 7 or 8 years ago and have simply been upgrading over the years. One I just checked has a 2GB / (root) and a 5 GB /usr. Neither have enough freespace to absorb the other, so I'd likely have to re-install the OS from scratch on those. (I know, 7 years later, it's about time anyway.) Regardless, I'm not saying my setup of a few machines is enough to drive the future, but I do think it begs the question as to how common setups like mine are. Is there a way to know? Does smolt collect that sort of info? Can smolt be extended to collect it. I repeatedly see "Microcode SW error detected. Restarting" in /var/log/messages when I connect to a 802.11n network. As side effect, connection speed drops to 1MBit/sec. Well, some applications in 11.3 accidentally crash. But most of them does not want to crash in a moment I am debugging them in the gdb, I searched in the documentation and found a simple solution. Collect cores: 1. Set SOFTCORELIMIT in /etc/sysconfig/ulimit to "unlimited" or do this just now by: ulimit -c unlimited 2. mkdir /cores ; chmod +t /cores ; chmod og+rw /cores 3. Add a line to /etc/sysctl.conf: kernel.core_pattern = /cores/%e-%t-%u.core or do this just now by: echo "/cores/%e-%t-%u.core" >/proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern Core files will be stacked to /cores and ordered by application name and time and will never overwrite. You can easily find a most crashing application there. Install debuginfo: gdb often complains on missing debuginfo packages. You can easily install all of them by copy and paste it to the console input of following command: eval zypper install $(sed -n 's/Try: zypper install//p') Well, you can do the same using the gdb log file and then reading it: eval zypper install $(sed -n 's/Try: zypper install//p' <gdb.log) And in gdb use: Nebo v gdb set logging file gdb.log set logging file on set pagination off attach {pid of application I want to debug} detach attach {pid of another application I want to debug} Well, and if you have a core file, do the final well known: bt or thread apply all bt Notes: Don't forget to check the backtrace in Bugzilla and submit unique crashes. If it is an accidental crash, it makes sense to submit the backtrace to the upstream Bugzilla, if the crash makes a big problem to use particular application or if you suspect that it is openSUSE specific, submit it to the Novell Bugzilla as well. Well, if the core comes from npviewer, feel free to run: rm /cores/npviewer* It does not make sense to report them anywhere. All these crashes I have seen were triggered by Adobe Flash or Adobe Reader and I have no chance to fix them. Hello, Syslog-ng 3.1.2 was released yesterday, so I started to prepare a version update, as it will make almost all patches redundant. I did a bco, updated syslog-ng, checked in, and found, that it compiles fine on all openSUSE versions, but fails to compile on SLES 11 SP1. Actually, it compiles, but the checks fail, for details check https://build.opensuse.org/package/live_build_log?arch=i586&package=syslog-… Two questions: 1.) does it need to be able to build sles11 packages, or it is not a requirement to be able to sr it to factory? 2.) could anyone with access to SLES 11 SP1 check, why this happens? Hello, I'm working on the way to internationalize the live cds. I noticed that is one select a language at install time, YaST is pre-setup to update all the distro with the given langage. May be simply pre-configured for fr, de, en, es. However this pre-configuration include some things like openoffice, etc... I could,in YaST, untick the not desired packages and install only the wnted ones (so I could, starting with 2.7Go get 2.9 Go with fr installed, when installing all I have 3.4GO. However, when I export the xml file, from YaST, I get all the packages originally selected, not my own selection. Hi, I'm going to fix https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=589293 in Factory. The reason for this is that there's no reason to bundle the cursor theme in this big package, especially since it's a different source. If you have a package that somehow is affected or is configuring the default X cursor theme, you might need to change a few things: + there is no theme called "default" anymore. I don't know why we had a symlink like this, but it's a bit confusing (especially since theme selection dialogs showed the same theme twice because of this) + the default theme is called "DMZ" + you should depend on dmz-icon-theme-cursors instead of desktop-data-openSUSE to make sure this theme gets installed. Note that I'll make desktop-data-openSUSE require dmz-icon-theme-cursors because it uses it (see /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager) Note that right now, dmz-icon-theme-cursors is not in Factory (it's called icon-theme-dmz-cursors there -- I'm fixing it too). [opensuse-factory] Konsole colors & font not menu adjustable

I find no way in Konsole menus to escape from white on black to customary black on white or select font to be used. Where/why are these hidden in 4.4.93's menus? [opensuse-factory] legacy nvidia cards and the 11.3 nvidia repo

Stephen (or other nvidia legacy expert), I've got an old nvidia TNT card I was having an issue with so I thought I'd try the old legacy nvidia driver with it. But the oldest nvidia driver is not in the repo. ie. x11-video-nvidiaG02 and x11-video-nvidiaG01 are both there for 11.3, but x11-video-nvidia is not. I assume that's intentional and that the older legacy driver is no longer compatible with a recent kernel? fyi: I tried to download the source and compile it. That worked, but when I tried startx, I got an error dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: AllocateScreenPrivateIndex I found numerous references to that on the web, but no obvious solutions. [opensuse-factory] Call for Testers : Compiz 0.9.0

Dear All, Factory has been opened again and we start getting wild. As many of you doubtlessly heard or read ( http://dominique.leuenberger.net/blog/?p=112 ) Compiz 0.9.0 has been released. This marked the first released snapshot of the new C++ rewrite of Compiz (the rewrite was not just to purely change the language, but a lot of limitations were removed, and serialization using libboost for example added). Now as Factory is open again, I will prepare the packages in X11:Compiz to be updated to 0.9.0 and then forward them to Factory. As brave Factory user, I would like to 'warn' you about any possible breakage from this update (even though I don't hope for any). Should you see any bugs, feel free to report them in the usual way in Bugzilla, component Compiz. As we have a good link to the upstream project I'm confident that we will be able to resort any kind of problems we might run into. Users that are running Compiz 0.8.6 on their systems and that have X11:Compiz enabled might want to switch to X11:Compiz:Compiz-0.8, which contains the Compiz 0.8 bugfix tree (currently still at 0.8.6).
