I just installed 11.4 with the gnome DE on a test-bed to see what it is like in anticipation of using gnome 3 (which my current distro, Ubuntu, will not be adopting). I installed 11.4 from the DVD, and it is the 32-bit version. (The installation is a stock-standard installation with all the latest upgrades as of a few hours ago.) I have 5 questions which I would be pleased to have answered: (1) I like to have a totally clean workspace/desktop and therefore put all the icons for the apps. I use on the top/bottom panels. In 11.4 I have done this for all the apps, I normally run except that the icons for TRASH and the HOME directory which cannot be deleted/moved to trash - the option is greyed out on the drop down menu. How does one get rid of these icons so as to have a totally clean workspace/desktop? (2) I use Mozilla Thunderbird (and Firefox). While there is the normal icon showing for Firefox there is no such icon for Thunderbird - all one is given is a blank 'page' as the icon. How does one get the appropriate icon for Thunderbird - which, by default in other distros, is automatically shown when one installs Thunderbird? (BTW, searching for, and finally finding such an icon in icons/hicolor/apps/48x48/ and selecting it does zilch, nothing, zero.) (3) I wanted to change the background for the desktop. I went to download a couple I liked from the website - but the damn images were blurred and unrecognisable when installed as the desktop background! What the....? How does one get a new backgrounds to be usable? (4) I have always set things up so that I have 6 desktops/workspaces - and I know which one I use for which application. For example, space #1 for Thunderbird, space #2 for Firefox, et al. Just before posting this message I had TB running in its usual workspace #1. There was a message in TB which had an URL link (in this mail list as a matter of fact mentioning the availability of gnome #3), clicked on the link and waited for FF to open -- but nothing happened. As usual I went to space #2 to look at FF - but there was nothing there! I won't go thru all the "variations on a theme" about this and what I tried but what I can state is that I had just prior to all this decided to try out the Desktop Effects (Control Center/Desktop Effects). With the Effects activated and starting Firefox in space #2 OVERWROTE Thunderbird which was started in space #1. Whatever you seem to start in a different workspace ends up in space #1. Deselecting Desktop Effects stops this nonsense. But this of course is not normal and the question therefore is: what haven't I installed/not configured so as to cause this ridiculous behaviour? (5) Is there an option, which I am not aware of, in openSUSE's update manager/software manager which will automatically select the best server for any upgrades/updates from one of my local mirrors? Downloading files from the (?)main server is a PITA -- the transfer rate is less than dial-up speed (although files from Packman came down at a most reasonable speed)? Thank you for attention. [opensuse-gnome] Is Gnome 3 for real?

I know that gnome 3 is yet to be available on an official repository for openSUSE but I had at least considered that the URL provided by Andi Sugandi, http://blog.crozat.net/2011/03/gnome3-live-image-version-030-released.html?… in his post a couple of days ago, contained the working version of Gnome 3 for openSUSE. I now just hope that I had jumped-in prematurely and that what will become available thru the official site, suggested to be GNOME:STABLE:3.0 , will be what Gnome 3 should be, at least initially, on openSUSE. The way it is now (as installed from the above site given in the crozat blog) requires TWO (2x) mouse clicks to do anything![**] - RIGHT click on the Header 'menu' to get a drop down menu and then LEFT click to CLOSE an application! There are no 'minimize, maximize, close' buttons andywhere so that If I am reading a message in Thunderbird, instead of simply left clicking on the 'close' buttton I have to right-click on the header menu (I don't know what the official name is!) and then left click to close the message so as to get back to the list of messages to read! There are no separate workspaces/desktops: everything is always on the one workspace - even though I am allowed to create my (usual 6 individual workspaces). (OK, there is this "bug" in compiz I learnt about in another thread - but the bug is supposed to be for gnome 2.3x....but I don't know.) Wot a lot of stupidity! :-( *Please* don't tell me that this is what users of Windows 7 and the MAC operating systems have to do all the time when using their systems! [**] Not quite correct: a single click on (?)most items in the COMPUTER box (bottom, left - equivalent to Windows START) will at least open the selection to allow for something to be done. [opensuse-gnome] Gnome Shell Theme

I don't know if this should go out to opensuse-factory as well, but I would like to make a suggestion about 12.1 coming out with Gnome 3. We should change the Gnome Shell theme to something more modern than our current Sonar one. I think the font is too rough and the icons are not too old-fashioned. We could use Gnome Shell's default theme or take a look at some of the themes below[1] or even use a Gnome 2 themes since they should all work[2]. This is only a suggestion from me since I personally don't know what the community as a whole thinks. [opensuse-gnome] GNOME 3.0 is out?

People, I saw that GNOME 3.0 is finally out and is available as Live Images or even as optional installation for some distros including OpenSUSE. It is real? How to do it in practice on 11.4? [opensuse-gnome] 11.4 Gome system sounds disabled as default

Dears, As per 11.2 I noticed again that 11.4 keeps on stay "mute" in terms of system sounds (login, logout, alerts,...) Differently by KDE 4.5 and 4.6 wherein such feature is enabled as default. Wonder if it is a design choice and if are planned changes. This is not an important issue nor a bug, but I guess that especially for newer users of openSUSE it would be better to have a more interactive desktop which responds with sounds to the user actions. [opensuse-gnome] GNOME:Ayatana status [4th april, 2010]

Dear all, All the dependencies and applications packages for GNOME:Ayatana's indicator stack are uploaded. A huge thanks to Dominique for giving some time to make this happen. From my own stuff, I've learned a lot during this, including: * Write and tune up spec files; * Creating and applying patches involving autotools and cmake; * Did my first 'backport' for one of the indicators (from libnotify 0.7.0 to 0.6.0, and it works); * Improved a lot my skills and know-how on how GNOME Team packages their software and methodology used; * Got to learn a few nice tricks about OBS, really very cool stuff; As the indicatores are nicely done now, I'm moving up to the missing applications (some require libappindicator support, which in 2 cases involve patching). It's not really that much and keeping things to the very minimum. Then we release and I continue my efforts on Unity, this time taking advantage of the new released 0.9.4 branch of Compiz and Dominique's packages. Thanks everyone for all the help I've got in mailing lists, #opensuse-gnome et al. I'm sure we'll take this initiative into good port.
