[opensuse-gnome] Junior Job: registering URI scheme handlers with glib 2.27

Hi, We're going to ship glib 2.28 in openSUSE 11.4, since 2.28 should be out in December. There's one change that we must prepare for, though: the way URI scheme handlers are registered changed. Before, applications used to register themselves in gconf (see /desktop/gnome/url-handlers). The new glib won't support that anymore and will use the MIME type system. See Bastien's post for some more background: http://www.hadess.net/2010/10/new-control-center-and-you.html What does it mean for us? It means that we have to patch various packages for this, and the good news is that by doing this, we can help upstream. It's really easy to do, and I'm looking for volunteers :-) Below are some instructions. It's a bit long. And it's late here, so maybe they won't be really clear to everyone ;-) But just ask if you want to help and face an issue. Here is the upstream tracker bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=631433&hide_resolved=0 Let's take an example: Yelp. If you go the tracker bug, you'll find a bug for yelp: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=631678 We need to register yelp for the x-scheme-handler/ghelp, x-scheme-handler/info and x-scheme-handler/man MIME types. So here are the steps we'll do: a) branch yelp in the build service (osc branch GNOME:Factory yelp) b) look for the source of the desktop file in the tarball. In this case, this is yelp.desktop.in.in. c) add the MIME types to the MimeType key. If there's no such key, create one. For yelp, there's no such key, so we create one: MimeType=x-scheme-handler/ghelp;x-scheme-handler/info;x-scheme-handler/man; d) make sure that the Exec line has %u or %U as argument. This is required to accept the URI that has to be opened. %u is for only one URI, and %U is for multiple URI. In the case of yelp, we probably want %u, and we see that the Exec line doesn't have %u nor %U, so we add %u. e) to make sure you were right to do this, manually simulate the opening of such an URI. Call "yelp ghelp:evince" and see if it works fine. (We replaced %u with ghelp:evince). f) it's also important to make sure that simply calling the Exec line by removing %u or %U works. For example, if yelp needs --open to open a URI, you would use "yelp --open %u". But you have to check that "yelp --open" doesn't fail and just launches yelp. If it doesn't, then it will be a bit more complex and I suggest for now to just report in the bug that yelp needs to be adapted. f) create a patch of these changes, and submit it in bugzilla, as well as in the build service Additionally, we need someone to also patch totem with the two patches that were committed in git for this: http://git.gnome.org/browse/totem/commit/?id=74833ef98e515104a5ef10b0e59af0… http://git.gnome.org/browse/totem/commit/?id=b337849b174efd6b11304ddcdd3cfd… There will be other apps to patch, that are not tracked in the upstream bug. Looking at what I have in gconf, we probably want to patch the desktop file for firefox (to support ftp and http) and transmission (to support magnet). We could also patch xchat (but it needs to be done carefully -- I'll let that as an exercice to the reader). Hi, This is the list of GNOME-related packages that got added since the last issue, ie August 26th. The packages that are in Factory as of this issue will be in Milestone 2! Woohoo! We didn't get any removal this time. I must admit I lost track of who did what, but many of those packages are in thanks to Atri, Dominique, and Luis! Hi, During the IRC meeting last week, there was some long discussion about the default 11.4 theming, especially for the background. Let me try to summarize what was said: - the proposed background is similar to what you can see at http://karl-tux-stadt.de/ktuxs/?p=2677 (but with a different shade of green). - as a distribution, having a consistent look and feel is rather important: we do want to have the boot splash and the desktop background form a consistent set. - some people thought that the currently proposed background is too close to KDE: it's based on a background that got included in KDE SC 4.5, and that exists in distribution-branded versions (like the openSUSE one). See the posts starting in August at http://ivan.fomentgroup.org/blog/ - some people mentioned that upstream GNOME will ask distributions to use the upstream GNOME 3 theme, including the background for GNOME 3 (so not for 11.4, but 11.4+1). For reference, this is http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-themes-standard/plain/themes/Adwaita/back… - some people mentioned that it's important to have an openSUSE-branded background for marketing. I think that covers most opinions that were raised. I'm explicitly not telling who said what, because I'll likely misquote people ;-) In the end, we didn't reach a conclusion. Just adding a geeko to jimmacs blue stripes background! U forget I make from one of the backgrounds the bootsplash. So now think I would choose the blue jimmac styled, and u would be a KDE user and land then in the celadon green KDM looks not so consistent. The same I would choose the celadon from KDE and u land on the blue styled GDM then. I asked jimmac for restyling it with celadon, he is fine with it :D But isnt really a solution because the patterns are different (KDE one is more plastic). So means that I have the same problem again. And still have to rework sonar. Thats why I choosed grey for the Gnome side, its a neutral color it works with every color. br gnokii P.S. [opensuse-gnome] Ayatana - first packages submited

Here's a short list of the packages submitted for review: - dee + http://launchpad.net/dee + SR 56306 + Unity dependence - bamf + http://launchpad.net/bamf + SR 56304 + Unity dependence - utouch-geis + http://launchpad.net/utouch-geis + SR 56241 + Indicators dependence - utouch-grail + http://launchpad.net/utouch-grail + SR 56239 + Indicators dependence - mtdev + http://launchpad.net/mtdev + SR 56240 + utouch-{grail,geis} dependence Additionally I've also submited to multimedia:libs an update to package glew (SR 56314). Now it builds to provide GLEWmx. It's waiting review. I'm not sure if the maintainer will want this feature available, though it brings no problems for what I could dig so far. About nux... it's almost building those there is going to be soon a release with a couple of fixes to the upstream release. Adam Williamson from Fedora is working it out. I've also mailed him, we traded some views... and for what I can say, 4 distro's so far working on Unity: Fedora (Adam Williamson), openSUSE (that's me), Frugalware (not sure, readed on Adam's blog) and Arch Linux (also community efforts). That's pretty much as much as I can advance now. Once more I would like to make clear that I'm not doing this to bring a 'Ubuntish look' to openSUSE GNOME, but to offer a wider choice for our users and some for private tinkering on what might happen as 'openSUSE IBERIA' (a localized spin for Spain and Portugal). Before I submit more stuff (I could already submit libindicate and libindicator, plus some indicators that don't mess with system), I need to know the status of GTK patch required for ido. Hi, A few minutes ago, I created GNOME:Next. This is the project that we will use to package a development version of GNOME when Factory is frozen. Please note that it is not intended to be used by end-users, and if you use it and it works, it's by pure chance ;-) I've populated it with branches from G:F of various packages, and by updating most of them, we should be able to provide a GNOME 3 environment. I thought a bit about how to handle packages in there, especially as we'll want to push them to Factory once Factory is unfrozen, and here's my proposal: + we use branches: this enables us to follow what's happening in current Factory + if a change occurs in G:F, it might potentially break the branched package in G:N. If this happens, then we'll look if the change is needed. If it is, then no difficulty ;-) If it isn't, then we should still merge it, then revert it, and explicitly mention in .changes that we merged it and reverted it for G:N. This way, we won't lose history from Factory, which will help the autobuild team later on. + we use the usual process to submit updates to a new upstream version. I considered the option of delaying writing good .changes entries, but if we delay that, it means it will never happen. Note that there's no collab data for this project, so no "osc collab todo". I might add support for it later, but there's no guarantee. If you want to help, just ask on irc what you can do :-) It will obviously take some time to update everything, but once it's mostly ready, we'll send a mail. Dominique: I'll start updating some packages by taking some of your updates from your GNOME3 project. Cheers, Vincent PS: Why GNOME:Next?
