[opensuse-gnome] 11.1 Feature Review

Ok, I've done some more clean up of the 11.1 feature ideas page: http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/Ideas/11.1 Its still messy and some ideas are a bit vague, but we can still have a discussion around various features. First off, packaging related things, there are a number of items that would simply require packaging: 1) gypsy (G:C) 2) viking (G:C) 3) nautilus-extensions (G:F) 4) crashbit icons (Stanislav's branding repo?) 5) gartoon icons (Stanislavs's branding repo?) 6) GNOME Online Desktop (G:F) Then there are a couple of things that just need testing: 1) Bluetooth mice 2) Bluetooth keyboard (other than pairing at gdm screen) 3) Bluetooth printing (via bluez-cups) 4) fonts.conf work 5) GDM splash screen disabling - the new one should be nicer for this And there are some policy related questions: 1) Face browser for GDM 2) Pidgin defaults And some pattern questions 1) xdg-user-dirs 2) raw-thumbnailer For individual topics where some discussion (IMHO) is needed, please comment where you feel strongly: Accessibility: 1) Would be nice to assess what (if anything) is improved/solved Desktop: 1) Panel tweaks need a yes/no 2) Gilouche window border color needs a yes/no 3) Color management, don't think we have a real hope of doing this right for 11.1, but we could make sure all apps that support color management have it enabled and shipping xicc, Mandriva might have a patch for gnome-settings-daemon 4) Clean app menu - kind of makes sense, but we'd need a list of overlap problems in a default install 5) Settings location - difficult now because sound, network, printer, bluetooth all have GNOME gui equivalents 6) For the sudo stuff, I think we need to restate this as a need to get pk-su or equivalent for PolicyKit 7) unified password manager - in general i think pidgin is our main hold out 8) Root priviliges in nautilus - this comes up a lot actually 9) baoaob/nautilus - push to 11.2 i think, its not critical 10) nautilus replace dialog issue - push to 11.2, its not critcal 11 Fix bug that is making a unnecessary extra space between notification area and volume icon. - not sure what bug this is Doorman: 1) I'd like to see this happen in general, but we have no one to work on it currently Dual Head: 1) It looks like the only item here is done, but we have a tracker bug for 11.0/11.1 Fonts.conf 1) for subpixel stuff, I think its simply a wontfix because of https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=408997 GDM 1) Clutter based face browser should just be dropped or pushed to 11.2, no time really Hardware Integration 1) latency-policy is going into F10, have to figure out if we need it or not Icons 1) Switching away from tango is a no go, but getting them packaged would be fine Infrastructure - this should probably be moved elsewhere Misc 1) Not really sure what the state of Hal device icons is, needs research Multimedia 1) gstreamer codec install - sreeves and ensonic need to talk 2) Podcast creation should be punted i think, no time 3) Polish photo workflow - not really clear whats required here Online Desktop 1) is conduit enough? it does most of the service integration work for us P2P 1) should reject, its not HIG compliant and an option to minimize to tray exists Performance 1) Can be done after feature freeze? Remote Desktop 1) Anyone know of a knx equivalent? [opensuse-gnome] RFC: default configuration for pidgin

Hi, We discussed this on IRC, and here's a mail to try to summarize the change in the default configuration of pidgin people might want. Please comment since I'm not a pidgin user, so I can't really know what's good or not. + always visible in the notification area + never open new windows unexpectedly + no sound by default + enable log (for im & chat?) Are there some other changes we want? Also, from a packaging point of view: looking at the code, it seems we can have initial values at /etc/purple/prefs.xml. This file will be read when the user has no preferences (so only the first time pidgin is run, I guess). That's not as powerful as gconf, but I don't think we want to patch pidgin to use gconf. So we'll ship such a file in pidgin-branding-openSUSE. But I guess this means we need an empty pidgin-branding-upstream? [opensuse-gnome] Customizing OpenSUSE 11 gnome live cd

I am looking to create a customized gnome live cd based on OpenSUSE 11. I have the image working from a USB key, and now I am working on customizing the squashfs portion. When the live cd is fully booted, the user 'linux' has a home directory. In /home/linux/Desktop there are a few icons that appear: "Live Installer", "Online Help" and "openSUSE". These are all .desktop files. The "Online Help" and "openSUSE" icons look to be copied from /usr/share/dist/desktop-files. The "Live Installer" icon appears to be copied from /usr/share/applications/YaST2/ directory. My question is, what copies them there? I want to customize what appears on the desktop, and so far /etc/skel and /etc/profile.d don't appear to be the ones who are placing the icons. In the squashfs, the user 'linux' is already added, but /home/linux/Desktop does not exist yet, so this is created when the user logs in. [opensuse-gnome] Traditional menu and menu bar applet icon

[Trying again after subscribing to the ML] Hi everyone. Some time ago I filed a bug to include some branding for the GNOME panel. Namely, I think it would be nice to replace the GNOME foot on the traditional GNOME menu as well as the menu bar applet with the openSUSE logo. A nice icon=B9 which would fit very well has already been done by Jimmac. The bug can be found here=B2. Vincent Untz asked me to mail to the list for some discussion about this. Helping Hands Looking for a volunteer for next week Tomorrow, presentation on Inkscape 11.0 updates There is an updated PackageKit in the updates channel. The new PK should get rid of the annoying "failed to reset..." message, it now will return all available package managment updates in one bunch and now will restart itself properly For pulseaudio, some fixes have been submitted and now accepted, and a few others, backports from 0.9.11 in FACTORY are getting submitted in the next few days General update (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=412722) got rejected, so only the crticial ones will re-submit yast-gtk update is in testing Feature review No change from last week, although some updates on the ideas page as mentioned Need to figure out how to open features in fate Feature update Changes for using PulseAudio system wide should start landing soon on the BS Multiscreen stuff got some sexy look (http://www.gnome.org/~federico/misc/monitor-labels.png), working on the tray icon now, which will provide rotation commands for tables and swivel monitors For PolicyKit and main-menu there are planned updates for A2 coming out end of next week New GDM is in Factory now, and works! [opensuse-gnome] Today's meeting

Looks like I won't be able to make it to today's meeting but wanted to mention a couple of items I was going to bring up at the meeting. 1) Helping Hands. I'm looking for a topic to present for next week's Helping Hands event. (Tmw, we have Inkscape with Jimmac). I was hoping to do F-Spot next week, but have not gotten any further on responses from those guys. If any of you know of anyone who can present on an interesting topic next week, please let me know so I can set it up. 2) Debugging scripts. Couple of months ago, we started talking in the meetings about coming up with easy to run debugging scripts and performance measurements for users in 11.1. Seems we've let that slide. I was wondering if anyone is working on this, since I've had a couple of people coming up to me lately asking if there's any movement on this. [opensuse-gnome] RFC: keeping/removing ggreeter

Hi, I'd love to know what people think of ggreeter. For those who don't know, ggreeter is the window that is displayed the first time you log in. And you generally don't see it anymore. To see it again, just launch 'ggreeter' in the run dialog or a terminal. I'd love to know what people think about it: is it useful? Should we keep it? Should we remove it? My personal opinion is that we should remove it and display the relevant information in some other places (in a help menu, eg). Note that removing it also removes some "direct branding", but I wouldn't think it's an issue.
