Alright, it's time for some Sneak Peek love. I've penned out four
article plans, but I'm sure we can come out with some more ideas, so
fell free to add an additional article to this page:
http://en.opensuse.org/Sneak_Peeks
Currently, we've got:
*Installation & administration
*KDE 4
*GNOME 2.24
*Misc improvements
Anyone interested in writing these articles?

Hello,
Just a quick update on the backporting of 2.24 for openSUSE 11.0. I'm
not entirely sure that we should actually "release" this even if we fix
up the few remaining build issues [2].
Reason for that is that we would have to maintain a separate
xorg-x11-libs [1] package. This package currently have pixman built-in
to it and the version in 11.0 is older than what's required.
When we start working on the GNOME 2.26 upgrade for 11.2, we can also
make it build for 11.1 straight away, making it much easier to maintain,
and we will be able to detect these sort of issues early in the cycle
and hopefully have it fixed relatively quick.
Thoughts?
Cheers,
Magnus

Hello followers :-)
I apparently had a bug report[1] assigned to me which talks about
enhancements for our LiveCD.
Now, this will be to late for 11.1, but lets discuss it for 11.2.
This is what's been suggested (my comments after each point);
1.- Remove Cheese and Add Xsane
is more necessary the software to use the scanner it is indispensable for all
office or home people want to use the scan immediately
captain_magnus> I honestly think more people wants to have some fun with their web cameras than scanning documents, so I think we should keep Cheese
2.-Include tsclient or gnome-rdp
this is very important for make a remote from other machine with VNC or RDP
very very important have this software
captain_magnus> This is possible already on the LiveCD thanks to NOMAD?
3.-Gimp
This software is indispensable have this in the live cd and the installation
for the users plz add this one to live cd
captain_magnus> Personally, I can't even create a filled rectangle in GIMP and so, I'd suggest to see if we can fit sk1 on the LiveCD instead.
4.-Yast2
Add one function for save all files RPM are download from the repositories to
make a cd with all updates and other software are installed to get all RPM and
install then in other computers don't have internet or don't have a good
connection this is very very very very important
captain_magnus> This is (sort of) already on the LiveCD for 11.1, thanks to the new "service pack" creator.
5.-More performance for can run in computer with low procesor and low memory
captain_magnus> Would be nice :-)
Cheers,
Magnus

Hi,
Since I'm waiting doing nothing, I'm looking at the list of packages in
G:F and starting to look at what we could move to G:C (the goal being to
have them in Contrib) -- or drop them.
The criterias I used to create this list are something like:
+ is the project still alive upstream?
+ is it useful for that many people?
For those wondering, I can see a Novell reason to move stuff (I guess it
means less things to support for Novell), but also a reason for the
community (less rules, so faster action possible).
So, list of stuff:
+ all the galago things: we don't even know if it's still working
(note to self: this includes gnome-presence-applet)
+ bakefile: it seems it used to be required by webkit, but it's not
anymore?
+ bombermaze: old game. Old. Did I say it's old? But probably fun.
+ conglomerate: an XML editor. Not really developed anymore.
+ eiciel: an ACL editor. I thought nautilus does this now?
+ fyre: a nice app, but, hrm, not really needed by many people
+ g-wrap: something related to guile. Not used by anything?
+ gDesklets: I'm unsure there, feedback welcome.
+ gbrainy: cool game, but not sure why it's here.
+ giver: err, this didn't move lately, and last thing I heard about it
is that it's not totally ready
+ glade: why do we keep the old unmaintained glade?
+ gnome-blog: handy I guess, but not for most people
+ gnome-commander: not a lot of people replace nautilus
+ gnome-reset: like gnome-blog
+ gnome-themes-extras: maybe? Depends on the themes in there, I guess
+ gnomeicu: most people will use pidgin or a telepathy-based client
+ gob2: tool for developers, but I don't think anything use it anymore
+ goobox: old sound-juicer competitor
+ gqview: we have eog
+ gthumb: a bit harder, but I think most people are happy with f-spot
+ libesmtp: needed by balsa (which is not in G:F, but is related to G:F)
balsa is not that used, so a good candidate too
(oops, libesmtp is required by kdump, so no)
+ libghttp: not used by anything?
+ libiptcdata: needed by gthumb only
+ libmcs: not used by anything?
+ mergeant: not really for end-users...
+ mozilla-bonobo: err. Bonobo?
+ tasque: is it still developed?
Yeah, this is a big list -- better to be aggressive :-)

Hi,
Some background can be found in
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429280
I'd like to kill glitz support in cairo, and other packages using it.
I'll probably do it this week, so raise your voice now if you don't
agree.

Evolution is one of these failing packages. It appears to have failed in openSUSE Factory too :-(
I'll try to get that fixed ASAP.

Hello,
So, with 11.1 just around the corner, now is a good time to start
planning for the future.
As a first step, can people please have a look at the 11.1 feature list
[1] and mark completed entries. We can then carry the list over and
start the discussion about what we want in 11.2.
Cheers,
Magnus

Hi,
is anyone working on reducing count of launchers showing up under the
"System" and "Utilities" categories in the app browser?
I just had a look myself because those categories are really cluttered
beyond being usable, but I it doesn't really make sense to me.
For example, why does the "Appearance" capplet launcher show up in
"Utilities"? The Categories string is the following:
GNOME;GTK;Settings;DesktopSettings;X-SuSE-Control-Center-LookAndFeel;
In applications.menu it only seems to match on Category=Utility for the
Utilities group... so how is this getting here? Same for about 15-20
other launchers...
IMHO fixing this should get a high priority as the app browser is really
getting unusable.
Cheers,
-Michael

Hi,
To fix https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=402048 (unable to
receive files by bluetooth), I've quickly packaged gnome-user-share in
home:vuntz:factory-playground (and submitted it to Factory).
This version doesn't hard-depend on apache, and only suggests it (the
relevant UI is hidden if it's not installed).
It seems to be working fine, but since it's something we want to have in
11.1, some real testing by real people (no, it doesn't imply I'm not
real) would help :-)
Thanks,
Vincent
