Hi all, As you might know, the wiki team has been working on a new wiki: wiki.opensuse.org. It'd be great to have someone taking care of migrating the useful information from http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME and migrate it to the wiki, probably starting at http://wiki.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GNOME_team (since it's linked from http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Teams) There's some documentation at http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki to do this. Hi! The tracker search tool shows results categorised into Applications. documents, etc. but does not search by tags. It is easily possible for someone to tag a file [tracker-tag plugin for nautilus], and then want to search for files having similar tags. Presently this can be done via command-line tracker-tag ts <tag_name>, but cannot be done via any gui. There is no way to sort of easily enable this or something ni tracker right, or does even tracker-search-tool provide for search by tags? [opensuse-gnome] 11.3 GNOME First look

Hi, Though I have been running some factory packages for a while, I just managed to do a full GNOME install of 11.3 on a bare metal and below are some feedback. - Login time is amazing. It seemed almost instantaneous since the moment I clicked on Login in GDM and the panel appeared with background loaded - Logout OTOH seem to take a lot more time than what it took with 11.2 In fact everytime when I select logout from gnome-do's menu, it takes atleast 10 seconds till I get my GDM screen (4G RAM machine) - I tried installing "Google Chrome". I downloaded the rpm and clicked on it to be installed by "Install/Remove software". There were some missing dependencies (libjpeg, lsb) and "Install software" did not complain about the missing packages. It just went on infinitely moving the progress bar. So I had to cancel that and resume the installation from terminal (which is how I came to know of the missing packages) - Sonar icon theme is not installed by default (installed my system from the live-cd) (Isnt sonar the default theme ?) - There is a lot of screen flickering during booting. Atleast 3 times, the screen goes colourless (not blank) with only busy mouse pointer shown. This flickering instead of showing the splash screen and gdm screen, is a usability problem. Hi, I have heard numerous mentions that Empathy can be used as a GTalk-substitute in Linux. However, with 11.3 I dont get anything except "Jabber" while trying to configure an account. I have installed all the telepathy and empathy modules that are listed by YaST. Hi, We'd need a few testers to make sure that two changes are working fine before we push it to 11.3: update applet does not see available updates https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=609409 => Scott has packages in http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/sreeves1:/branches:/GNOME:/… We need people who installed RC1 to install the libpackagekit-glib2 package from there, and then see if they can install the updates. gdm greeter doesn't work without local users (e.g. NIS) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615044 => I added a patch for gdm, and the built package is available at https://build.opensuse.org/package/binaries?package=gdm&project=home%3Avunt… I'd appreciate if people could test it -- even if you're not affected by the bug because you have local users :-) It should be safe, but since it's a really visible part of openSUSE, I want to double-check it's all good. Hi all, Generally speaking, we seem to be doing good, with no big major issue in GNOME for 11.3. However, we should make sure to focus during the last few days we have. Here's a list of bugs that should be of priority: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=609409 update applet does not see available updates This bug is a blocker. We have to fix it. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591072 Application-browser keeps "New applications" forever instead of expiring them as appropriate Not a blocker, but highly visible. Shouldn't be too hard to fix. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=380665 Packagekit: Change "Software updates" to "Software update configuration" Not a blocker, but again quite visible. One issue, though, is that it might require a string change, which is bad at this stage. If you want to help with one of those, please tell it here. We can assist you, if needed. Hi. A similar situation as was in the bug bnc#533491 repeats again for openSUSE 11.3 in RC1. 'Prefered applications' and 'Startup Applications' appears twice in both 'Personal' and 'System'. I haven´t found filed a bug yet in bugzilla. I installed the GNOME 3.0 build for openSUSE 11.2 as described at http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/3.0 This is not a complaint, just a question, does this work reasonably well for anyone here you has tried it? Hi all. As i can see in feature #306635, you dont want to change computer icon. Problem is when i increase the panel, computer icon has still the same size and it doesn´t look quite well. Hi folks, The openSUSE Marketing Team is getting ready for the upcoming 11.3 release. As such, one of our tasks is to ask different teams to submit Sneak Peeks, screen shots, screen casts, etc. which can then be published via openSUSE Weekly News. Is anyone interested in volunteering to do this? Or several of you working together? We surely want to make GNOME visible in the campaign. Hi, I'm leaning towards using gnome-applications.menu and switching soon. It's just a single line in /usr/bin/gnome: export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome- It'd be great if people could test it on their machines, and shout out loud if there's any issue with the structure of the applications menu. Hello, Just a criticism reminder toward the Italian translation group which is responsible for bundle-gnome-lang-it (sorry for any mismatch on name; I am far from my linux box). For all the time the yast2 has been affected by a ugly error which printed out <mall> </mall> into the window which requests for super-user password. No correction have been issued in all this time, so I argue that italian group (if any) is not so careful on debugging/correction on this kind of issues. I resolved the problem by installing the Factory version of bundle-lang. Cheers, P.S. Edit: I'm cross-posting my comments as I feel that this deserves a thread of its own, independent from the originating thread which was on another issue... Couple of my observations on how we as a community can make openSUSE better:- (Disclaimer: This is for the normal user and not the expert) 1. Simplify zypper: The whole upgrading procedure where patches and packages are treated separately have to be streamlined. It is a tad confusing for the normal user. Mandriva provides a very elegant and neat way to upgrade the system through their mdkonline applet. Something we should look at as well 2. Package Management through YaST: The Qt version rocks, but the GNOME version simply is sucks. 3. Better bootsplash experience by using Plymouth 4. Simplify the repository structure. There are too many confusing ones, Factory, STABLE, UNSTABLE etc...the KDE guys are working on simplifying it...I guess. GNOME needs simplification. Many mistake Ubuntu to have the best user experience distro....but that tag actually belongs to Mandriva, which still has managed to keep itself alive (I don't know how longer though). Some of their tools are very good like msec (Mandriva Security), menu layout for GNOME and KDE which is unique and very consistent. We could take some cues from there and add the requisite polish on top of it. Regarding whats wrong with the GTK interface (in 11.2) is the fact that you need to press two buttons both of which are not close by to select a package for install. First you need to select the package, the go to the lower right corner to select to install. Hi. I have a trouble with software management. I can´t launch it in M7. Notification in the pop-up window is: Accessing the Software management failed. System management is locked by the application with pid 4526 /usr/sbin/packagekitd. I thought that the packagekit is seeking updates, but it lasts long enough. If i want to start software management, i have to kill this process. Can anybody reproduce this issue? Hi, Earlier in this cycle, I worked on https://features.opensuse.org/308477 The goal is to have a better preselection of games on the livecd. What's happening now on the livecd is that we have gbrainy and gnome-games-recommended installed. The latter contains: aisleriot, glchess, gnome-sudoku, gnomine, iagno, lightsoff, mahjongg, quadrapassel, swell-foop. (Which means those games from gnome-games are not installed by default: glines, gnect, gnibbles, gnobots2, gnotravex, gnotski, gtali) So far, I feel this is a good selection -- maybe we could remove one or two, but it's okay. I'm just wondering if you can think of any other game we should put there by default?
