Hi Since it's part of the agenda for tomorrow's meeting, and since I'll be away from computers till Sunday, here's a summary: * 5:1 support. Patch for fixing this ( https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381686 ) has just been submitted to autobuild. It supports setting different speaker setups, and from the tests from Bjorn and myself, it seems to work correctly, but will need further testing, so if you have some nice speakers, test them with the latest packages * volume slider in padevchooser. I haven't had time to finish this patch, mainly because I needed some big changes in padevchooser code to be able to get all the sinks, so that we change the volume in all of them. On Sunday, as soon as I'm back, I'll continue working on this. It makes the volume slider show up on left click, like the old volume applet. Another option I've been looking at is to add change the old volume applet to use PA, which might be much easier. * chirping sound problem is fixed, although some of the default values we use now for default.pa (see patch in pulseaudio package) might be problematic for some setups, so we probably want to change them as part of changing the speaker setups. My view is as follows: PC's or Workstations are tools for a certain kind of User / Customer and not kiddie playthings with bells and whistles and all sorts of small pastimes. When I first came across Linux, I immediately decided on Gnome Desktop for exactly that reason. Regarding the distribution I ran in several circles, partially caused by the fact, that some ( among them SuSE thence ) would simply not install on my hardware. After having tried all major distros I decided on openSuSE ( fallback Fedora ) for ease of use an managability. That was 10.2 which was fine with me, except for two issues that were promised to be fixed in 10.3, that's how I got a bit deeper involved than I had at first intended. I have no objections against offering all sorts of gimmickry, but it shouldn't be forced on the average user by default. You like a boomerang that either kills or comes back to your hand. The fancy coloring is for worthless crap sold to tourists. You probably were discussing all that earlier, alas I wasn't around then. Conclusion K* = Windows 99, Gnome-openSuSe = WindowsXP Professional. [opensuse-gnome] Discussions on a positive note, rather than negative...

Hey guys, It'd be really nice if we could have discussions on this mailinglist on a positive note instead of "useless this" and "useless that" tone. There are nicer ways to get your point through and it might even encourage people to participate in the discussion as well as helping to fix what issues people have. [opensuse-gnome] Agenda for upcoming meeting May 15 2008

Dear all, as I was told the agenda for the weekly meeting is agreed upon with reasonable lead time in this mailing list. Reasonable meaning so far in advance, that everybody interested has sufficient time to get prepared. I should think a minimum of 3 days would only be fair and supportive of a qualified discussion. So actually an agenda would have to be available and published tonight, tomorrow noon the latest. As one topic I suggest for the future agendas as closing issue, is agreeing on the agenda for the next meeting. That would give everybody plenty of time to get in shape. Casual P.S. [opensuse-gnome] RFC: changing the default keybinding to switch keyboard layouts

Hi, This is all about https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=373197 Quick summary: for some reason living in X and difficult to solve at the moment, the current default keybinding to switch keyboard layout (Alt_L+Alt_R) does not work and can not work. Since it's not easily fixable, we can change the keybinding to something that works (Shift_L+Shift_R, for example). At least, it will work. But on the other hand, this will break user expectations for users who are used to the current keybinding (and we'll likely switch back to Alt_L+Alt_R in a future release, once it's working). The less worst solution, IMHO, is to change the keybinding for now and, if possible, hide the non-working keybindings, so people who care enough to look at the options can only select something that works. [opensuse-gnome] RFC: how to open the main menu with the logo keys

Hi, I've been working on bug 372423 [1] for a few hours now. I originally thought it wouldn't be too difficult -- yeah, don't laugh, I'm naive ;-) Basically, the bug is about a patch that we have in metacity to open the main menu with the logo keys. The problem is that this does not work well for all keyboard drivers, as the keycode returned when a logo key is pressed can change. And it's hardcoded in the patch. A possibility is to use the xkb definition to know what is the keycode for LWIN/RWIN. Here's my latest comment, proposing something else: == So, I played a bit with all this. It's kind of hard to directly use LWIN/RWIN, and it would make a huge patch for a feature that will never get accepted upstream. Also, note that we disabled this behavior by default in openSUSE, and it's only active in SLED. An alternative approach is to consider that the user who wants to use the window keys to open the main menu won't play with XKB settings. So we can consider that Super_L and Super_R are the window keys. Then, it's just a matter of creating a new gconf key: /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu_list. This key is a list of strings, and we can put Super_L and Super_R there to get the same results. In terms of openSUSE, it means we just drop the patch and do nothing. In terms of SLED, it means adding a new key in gconf2-branding-openSUSE. I'll ask on the mailing list to get feedback on the idea. == I think it's really much cleaner, simpler, more maintainable, "lots-of-other-words"-er to go this way. Opinions on this?
