Thanks to some work by Martin Vidner, 1-click install works nicely in
GNOME/Firefox now as of 10.3 beta 3. Go to:
http://software.opensuse.org/search
and give it a try. Looked pretty good to me (other than the 1000 yast
progress dialogs).

Hi,
The date representation for polish locale in 10.3 seems to cause some
issues. The dates are represented in the form of roman letters such as
the following in 10.3,
Pn, 10 IX 2007, 17:09:05 IST
where as the date representation for the same locale with 10.2 is,
pon wrz 10 17:20:23 IST 2007
Evolution uses strptime to parse the date strings using locale's date
format. The corresponding bug assiociated with this is
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=302371 . Any clues on how to
fix this ? Does this require a fix in glibc ?
thanks in advance, Chenthill.

I've noticed these related problems on-and-off involving GNOME
packages on openSUSE 10.2:
- on a stock install, gnome-games when queried would list, among
others /var/games/glines.{Large,Medium,Small}.scores -- but the RPM
actually installs /var/games/glines.scores
- attempts to upgrade to GNOME:STABLE always results in a broken
install, one of the telltale sign being the inability to load icons
- after downgrading back to openSUSE-10.2+updates+GNOME:Community, to
my surprise the icon loading problem still occurs. I tried running
'glines' from the terminal, and get this:
(glines:17512): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Cannot open pixbuf loader module
file '/etc/opt/gnome/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders': No such file or
directory
Weird, I thought. Perhaps it's the same RPM bug that used to affect
Fedora, where some files are clobbered on RPM upgrades? To be safe, I
removed gtk2 (with --no-deps), and then reinstalled it. Twice. Using
smart and, for safety measures, using rpm manually.
Like gnome-games, here is the result:
michel@hitchens:~> rpm -ql gtk2 | grep gdk-pixbuf
/etc/opt/gnome/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders
/opt/gnome/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders
michel@hitchens:~> ls /etc/opt/gnome/gtk-2.0/*.loaders
ls: cannot access /etc/opt/gnome/gtk-2.0/*.loaders: No such file or directory
michel@hitchens:~> rpm -q gtk2
gtk2-2.10.6-24.2
Any thought? Will probably file this to Bugzilla, but I need to know
what to file this against. GNOME in general? The build service? RPM?
Thanks,

Hello,
a couple of the smartcard packages use a system-wide nss database for
their smart card configurations (pam_pkcs, krb5's pkinit plugin).
currently, no package sets these up on the system for the user, and
probably the right package for this is mozilla-nss. unfortunately the
tools to do this would be in the mozilla-nss-tools package.
would it be a problem to merge these into the main mozilla-nss
package, and ad a postinst to create the nssdb?
thanks,

Just wondered how stable (for want of a better word) GNOME:STABLE is?
Had been wondering whether it might be an idea to change the target for
GNOME:Community for products < openSUSE_Factory to be
GNOME:STABLE/<product> if G:S is stable enough?

I have backported Factory of 0.4.0 to 10.2 with the cost of dropping
making of documentation and %if -ing a lot of stuff. Also I have set a
dependancy on hicolor-theme 0.10 due to the missing icons otherwise.
You can find both in my Home Project -
http://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=f-spot&project=home%3Ai-nZ.
Are you okay if I update f-spot in GNOME:Community, which is a quite
old version (0.2.2) ?
Regards.

What about creating GNOME:GNOME1. I can move there related gtk1,
libgnome1 packages from GNOME:STABLE and GNOME:UNSTABLE and add xmms.
If anybody will want more there, it will be up to anybody to add more
GNOME1 packages.

I've added a new package to G:C, extra-rpm-macros.
It is for backporting new macros to older products and currently
provides the %lang_package macro used in Factory although more can of
course be added in future.

After some discussion on the #opensuse-gnome channel, I would like to
followup and clarify some things regarding this decision.
1) Nautilus is still the default for burning data CDs and copying ISO
images. Banshee is still the default for burning audio CDs. Brasero is
available as an application that can be used to accomplish these tasks
as well, if a user so desires. We will not change the defaults for 10.3,
but may evaluate different defaults for the next release.
2) I have tested Brasero on five different sets of hardware, alongside
GnomeBaker. On each set of hardware I tested audio CD burning, data CD
burning, ISO burning, and CD duplication. Brasero was successful in all
20 operations. GnomeBaker on the other hand failed each time with the
same result (regarding the cdrecord compatibility layer for wodim).
3) For any issues that may arise with Brasero, we will be able to
actually work with the active maintainer of the application, benefit the
upstream project, and can expect faster turnaround time for the issues
due to the activity level of the project. With GnomeBaker all issues
will have to be resolved and maintained at the distribution level with
no upstream support, because there is no longer an upstream for
GnomeBaker - it is a dead project.
4) If you have used Brasero on 10.2 and ran into negative results,
please try the Brasero that will ship in 10.3 Beta 3 before casting
doubt. A lot has gone into Brasero and the underlying wodim stack since
10.2.
Please do not hesitate to respond with further concerns or issues! We
all want the best for GNOME in 10.3.
Cheers,
Aaron

Hello Everyone,
We have replaced GnomeBaker with Brasero [1] for 10.3 Beta 3. Here are a
few of the most significant reasons for the sudden switch:
1) Brasero is maintained and actively developed; while it is still
young, this is very important.
2) GnomeBaker is deprecated, unmaintained, and hasn't seen a commit in
seven months [2] and a release in nearly a year [3].
3) Brasero, while slightly rough around the edges and could benefit from
a little polish (but the same can be argued for GnomeBaker) works with
the new wodim and related tools, which means it's actually possible to
burn discs in Brasero.
4) Brasero has decent desktop integration, including support for Beagle,
Totem playlists, libnotify, and solid GStreamer support.
We are urging anyone interested to give Brasero a thorough testing and
report bugs on it ASAP for Beta 3 and beyond.
Thanks,
Aaron
