Hi all I have a problem with Leap 15.1 and went to sign up with openSUSE forums. I received a validation email, which contained neatly ordered garbage but no validation code. The sender of this email is the webmaster from microfocus, but an email to that address just bounces. I have since discovered that openSUSE and microfocus are no longer associated. So, given that the validation process is broken, how do I get signed up to the forums? [opensuse-support] data moving tuning

Hi, all -- I am building a system for fast transfer of video files from MicroSD cards, and I am looking for tunables advice. It will also be my everyday desktop, since I can't afford two machines, but its primary mission is to move data fast. My plan is to use 15.1 and, without starting another religious war :-) and after the convenient recent file system discussion, leave my beloved ReiserFS to use XFS for the large data partition. The box has a single Ryzen CPU, an m.2 SSD, 16G of RAM that I will bump to 32G as soon as funding permits, 10 gigabit motherboard USB, and a second 10 gigabit USB daughter card. I'm limited to this hardware by budget, so there isn't much else that I can do there, but I wonder about parameters and settings in the OS or perhaps the file system config. Are there any knobs to turn to speed moving data across the bus? Is there a better version or even -- gasp -- a better flavor for this kind of work? Any suggestions in general? Hi, my system logfiles contain lots of messages Failed to reset fd limit before activating service: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Failed to restore old fd limit: Operation not permitted It's both service org.opensuse.Snapper and org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper triggering that message. What is it, why is it there, and is it a problem? Hii all - is there a problem with download.opensuse.org again? I keep getting 403 Forbidden errors when attempting to access anything at or below that url. Software.opensuse.org is OK. The status page suggests everything is operational, so maybe it hasn't been logged yet? Tried both firefox and chrome, just in case it was a brower issue. [opensuse-support] Tumbleweed update through software updates applet

Hi all, until recently we were supposed to update Tumbleweed only by using "zypper dup" from the CLI. Now the Software Updates applet has been updated to support Tumbleweed too, so it should do The Right Thing. I've always felt uncomfortable using the applet, but today I decided to give it a spin. After the update, the applet presented me immediately with another batch of updates, which I found unusual. So I checked by using the usual "zypper dup", which found no updates. After a bit of investigation, I found the reason: I have configured zypper not to offer updates when the update would imply a change of vendors (allowVendorChange = false which BTW should be the default IIRC). The applet does not follow the same criteria, so it offers the updates nevertheless. I think this is not desirable; shouldn't it be better to let the applet follow the same configuration as zypper? Dear list readers, it's me again. As described in this post https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-support/2019-09/msg00048.html i installed Tumbleweed with disabled "Install recommended packages"-option right from the beginning. With your help i finally succeeded to login to a plasma session successfully. But - although i changed (on the very first screen of the installer) the language the system should be installed in to "German" - my system presents a really bizarre mix of german/english, e.g.: When i press the right mouse button on the KDE starter button i get this menu Edit Applications (German: "Menüeinträge bearbeiten") Configure Anwendungsmenü (German: "Anwendungsmenü einrichten ...) Show Alternatives (German: "Alternativen bearbeiten) Kontrollleiste Options (German: "Kontrollleiste-Optionen") Similar effects can be seen in many applications as well. So my question are: The language selection is the very first decision to make in the installer. Even if the user decides NOT to install recommended packages, shouldn't all language packages required for the installed packages being installed as well? I have checked my package list in yast and for every installed package i installed the corresponding -lang package (if there was one). Still i have that language mix (e.g. in dolphin the menu is in english some submenus are in german others a mix of both languages). What additional package(s) must i install to get a desktop completely in german? (-lang-packages should be installed for every installed package!) Dear list readers, today i installed openSUSE Tumbleweed20190824-0 on this machine: Intel® Core™ i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz Memory: 31,3 GiB Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256GB (pre-partitioned with GPT, pre-formatted but otherwise empty) This is where i changed the defaults of the installer Language + Keyboard Layout: German Network Settings: skipped System Role: Desktop with KDE Plasma Expert Partitioner - Start with existing Partitions => ESP (fat32), /(ext4), home(ext4) Clock and TimeZone: no changes made Local User: created with Automatic Login and Use this password for system Administrator both disabled Authentification for System Administrator: provided Installer Settings: selected Software Software Selection and System Tasks: selcted Details... on next screen: selected menu item Dependencies and disabled Install recommended packages pressed Accept and got presented with a list of packages to be installed pressed OK and was back to Installer Settings pressed Install On reboot i was presented with a commandline login. journalctl -b0 -p3 showed no errors except Couldn't get size: 0x80...0e + MODSIGN: Couldn't get UEFI db list (i see these errors on other openSUSE systems where they do no harm) Yast2 shows X is installed startkde gives $DISPLAY not set or cannot connect to the X server startx fails with command not found hwinfo --gfxcard says i915 is active lsmod shows i915 is loaded So my question is Is an installation without recommended packages by definition an installation without graphical desktop or did i make a mistake while installing? Which packages do i need to install (however, i would not like to install all recommended packages)? Thank you very much for your help. Hi all, In the last few snapshots of Tumbleweed, timidity is broken. Mostly I tend to start it as background server by issuing - as normal user - "timidity -B 0 -iA &". This gives now a segfault. Is there any way to limit zypper search output to a reasonable number of columns for version? Git versions routinely triple the version column width, causing output to overflow 80 columns. [opensuse-support] How to find wireguard repo?

Can someone help me to find correct way to search for wireguard repo on opensuse.org please? Wireguard website gives example of non-fqdn link to OBS. So, I have tried reliable OBS search at: https://software.opensuse.org/search - but failed to find anything. I tried searching for terms: wireguard, wire, guard, etc. with no results. What am I doing wrong - from google searches, I know that the wireguard exists in OBS, but cannot find it directly? Using third party links for software, especially something like VPN, is a security nightmare. So, I would prefer direct/correct opensuse way to do this. Any advice? [opensuse-support] USB-C Power Delivery on Clevo laptop

I'm really hoping Vinzenz from Tuxedo might be reading and able to help with this, but anybody else had any experience with USB-C and power delivery on Linux? I bought a secondhand Clevo laptop, originally from a specialist vendor (not Tuxedo) that's seemingly now defunct. It's a Clevo N131WU, the 13in model similar to Tuxedo's InfinityBook Pro 13: https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Linux-Hardware/Linux-Notebooks/10-14-inc… Most of the specs are similar but mine only has 5Gbps USB-C instead of Thunderbolt. I also just purchased a Startech MST30C2DPPD docking station that comes with Power Delivery amongst other things. Seems I got burnt, since I get no power through it (Leap 15.1). That's the most critical thing I need so the dock's useless to me without it. What's more, the HDMI doesn't work either (I can switch the HDMI cable directly to my laptop and it's fine. It appears some Startech docks use DisplayLink drivers but I can't find info about that relating to this specific model). All the other ports work. I could live with having to plug the HDMI separately but without PD it's a brick. So before I send the dock back, I'm wondering if there's anything known about this in openSUSE / Linux. Is Power Delivery fully supported? Does it need a kernel tweak or special package? Rebooting twice after the first segfault didn't help. This has happened on more different installations than I can remember, probably at least 4. The current one isn't even my own PC, just my SDD, with TDE rather than KDE3, in another's, trying to troubleshoot its hardware. Are my systems special in this situation? [Leap 15.1, xfce, kernel 5.2.11-1.g6385110-default] I have a machine with 2 nvme drives, 1 in the built-in motherboard m.2 slot (grub2 boots 15.1,"SX8200NP"), other in an m.2 slot on a pci-e expansion card (boots 15.0,"SX7000NP"). The dev names of the 2 nvmes seem to keep changing within the same boot. Here's an example from the logs with the mb nvme first called nvme0 by the kernel, then nvme1 by btrfs, then nvme0 by both smart and btrfs. But the device according to yast is still nvme1. Confusing, to say the least. I need someone smarter than me (which is just about anyone) to tell me what is going on here. [opensuse-support] Wine experts? How to reconfigure?

Hi list, I wonder if there's some wine experts around here? My issue: I have a wine setup here on my Tumbleweed system, slowly grown with various applications over three years. I'm now trying to run some new program (Maskulator, a fresnel propagation optics program). It crashes :( However, if I rename .wine to .wine.bak and then run the program, I get a notification it is doing some configurations - and now the program runs! But of course all my previously installed stuff is gone. [opensuse-support] Tumbleweed: usb: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

Hi *, on my DELL XPS13 9370 I get the message usb usb10-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? when connecting a device to the first (closer to the front) of the two Thunderbolt/USB-C ports on the left side. Is this a hardware problem or can it be a kernel driver problem? Thx. Bye. [opensuse-support] Annoying issue with KDE panel / NetworkManager

Hello all, everything was working fine with a stock openSUSE Leap 15.0 installation. Since I went to Leap 15.1 'zypper dup' I experience issues with the KDE panel. There's one panel configured (among other things with an application launcher (the gecko icon), a task manager (i.e. a list of open windows), and a systray). After a certain time, some functions of the panel cease to work - for no apparent reason. Most notably autohide and the task manager (i.e. I can't jump to another window by just clicking on it). The application launcher or controlling a music player via its systray icon continue to work. My current workaround is: killall plasmashell ; sleep 3; plasmashell & but that leaves me with another annoying issue with Network Manager. After restarting plasmashell I cannot activate network connections that require a password. Normally a PW dialog for unlocking kwallet appears, but not after a restart. So I guess, I'm looking for help in either preventing the panel from acting up or how to restart the panel such that NetworkManager can ask for a password. Any hints are greatly appreciated! [opensuse-support] 'Moving' a running X session to another monitor

Hi list, I wonder if here's some eXperts that know the solution to this: I have a small computer (for astronomy, mount and camera control) that is running openSUSE Tumbleweed. It usually has no monitor or keyboard connected. But it does run graphical.target with an icewm session (autologin). I'm using that via x11vnc_ssh to run the guiding software (phd2). Every now and then I'd like to do something at the mount and would like to see the session on a display that I connect to the (already running) computer. However, the X session won't display there :( I had tried also connecting a keyboard. I can use that to switch to a virtual console, and that is displayed on the newly connected monitor. As soon as I ALT-F7 back to X it goes black again :( Is there a way to get the session to display on a newly connected monitor? [opensuse-support] where can I retrieve the information given in virtual console F10?

When I go to ctl+alt+F10 I got a kind of journal. However, I was not able to find the information given neither in journalctl nor in dmesg. As there is an indication about a probable bug in alsa, I would to be able to recover the text.
