Hi, all --
I'm running Leap 15.2 (and this has been happening for a while), and
after a round of updates I have to go back to /etc/profile.d and
wipe out files that I don't want (alias.bash + ls.bash in particular).
Different from adding my own run commands to profile.local.sh thereunder,
I want to NOT get the stock stuff.
Is there any way to keep them from being dropped again so that I don't
have to deal with this over and over? *sigh*
TIA & HAND
:-D

I have had some evidence of a lack of privacy in my system, and I have a
couple of questions.
This lack of privacy is a function of the internet, not some person
having physical access to the computer.
I realize that a vpn will definitely work with email, but will it work
with Thunderbird? And will it work with vendors
on the 'net? Can one access (for example) Amazon, peruse a category and
purchase an item from them via vpn?
Is it vendor neutral, so it works with any vendor of any type of product?
Assuming the answers to the previous questions are positive, which vpn
would be easiest to set up and to
use in practice, without being a 'nix guru?
Thanx for any comments--doug
Hi *,
just a hint.
There seems to be a problem with kernel 5.13.x and nfs (at least v4).
Using this kernel, nfs v4 mounts won't succeed any longer - they are just
hanging.
I found https://lkml.org/lkml/2021/6/29/218, but no solution.
Switching back to 5.12.x solves the problem.
Bye.
Michael.
Hi,
I have a virtual server that's been running since 13.2, now at 15.1 .
At some point I started having boot problems requiring me to log in to
the provider's virtual console and manually press enter a couple of
times.
The first type of problems wa that I only saw
error: file `/boot/grub/fonts/unicode.pf2' not found.
and the boot process hung (unless I pressed enter a couple of times).
So I copied /usr/share/grub2/unicode.pf2 to /boot/grub2/fonts ( the
directory did not exist ), regenerated grub.cfg using
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
and rebooted.
I was next greeted by
error: file `/boot/grub/i386-pc/all_video.mod' not found.
which indeed, did not exist.
I checked another virtual server I have running ( 15.2 this time ) and
working properly and it has the following additional entries in
/boot/grub
device.map
i386-pc
locale
I could start copying them over, but I guess I'm missing some sort of
fundamental operation that was supposed to happen and also potential
updates will not happen.
I checked, and these files are installed by packages:
$ rpm -qf i386-pc locale device.map
file /boot/grub2/i386-pc is not owned by any package
file /boot/grub2/locale is not owned by any package
file /boot/grub2/device.map is not owned by any package
With a recent Leap 15.1 upgrade all the grub2 packages were
reinstalled, so these were not brought in by scriptlets.
I have no idea where to look next right now.
Does anyone have any suggestion about how I can get my /boot/grub
directory in working order?
Thanks,
Robert

Can someone help me to diagnose a problem with sound on my laptop?
My system (after update) is:-
Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20210620
KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.83.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.12.10-1-default (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa DRI Intel® HD Graphics 620
The problem is that when I play music (through VLC media player or
audacity) everything is fine until I plug in earphones. When the earphones
connect, there is only silence. The 'phones worked fine until a recent
update.
PulseAudio Control (Volume Control), shows output and under 'Output
Devices' tab when I switch from headphones to speakers, I hear music. Back
to headphones, silence.
I ran alsa-info.sh when playing through speakers, then connected the
headphones and ran alsa-info.sh again.

It seems that a number of values get set to zero on plugging in the

Anyone have a way to fix the problem?

How do I report that https://meet.opensuse.org/ is not working for me?
My camera doesn't work. It worked early March. The camera works fine on
other tools, like vlc or WhatsApp.
Same issue with https://meet.jit.si/.
I don't see a contact link in any of the two.

Hi
This is more a heads-up resp. request for confirmation:
Since one of the latest TW updates - I guess to Plasma 5.22 - KMail does not
display all mails anymore:
- It shows 25 unread mails, but I find only 8 marked as unread (although 25 is
correct)
- it does not show a single mail from yesterday (where the PC was off)
- akonadictl fsck/vacuum did not fix it
- neither did restarting everything
Anyone experiencing the same issue?
Cheers
Axel
Hi *,
when connecting my Samsung S9 via USB-C to my DELL XPS13 notebook, it doesn't
show up in the removable devices applet. Instead the applet tells me "no
removable devices". Opening dolphin, the smartphone is shown in the devices
section, though. From there I can open the folders on either the internal
storage or the additional card and also access pictures taken by the
smartphone camera below the DCIM folder.
But I can't
- manage the device via the removable devices applet,
- test or configure the smartphone camera in the "digital camera" settings
in systemsettings (I get messages like "can't claim USB device" when I try
it),
Enable autmatic mounting of removable media ist off in system settings.
I also uninstalled all gvfs packages, because I suspected them to be the
culprit.
I am sure, this all worked at least up to last October. I am not sure, when it
stopped working - I use this feature only when I'm on vacation.
Actually the latest Tumbleweed snapshot is installed on this notebook.
Any idea?
TIA.
Bye.
Michael.
