Hi good people, As discussed on previously gnome meeting I volunteered myself to find someone willing to desing/work on an alternative theme we could use for openSUSE. I've traded a few messages with '0rAX0' an artist I've found at Deviant Art, and he's willing to help us out and cooperate with us to improve and maintain shell themes. I don't know what's Vincent's ideas towards the mentorship program, but I think we have a potential candidate here. I leave for reference his user page on Deviant Art[1] and I'm working on an email explaining him the resources we use for communication and so on. I would love to see him integrated in our Team and if possible to have him also integrated on opensuse-artwork (would be awesome to have a GNOME'r there). PS: Anyone has a final on Malcom's GNOME:Extras (or whatever?) [opensuse-gnome] It (still) fails to Install Banshee 2.1 on openSUSE 11.4

Hi! I know Nelson Marques has succeeded to install Banshee 2.1[0], but it still fails to install it on my openSUSE 11.4 machine. It still requires (mono) dbus-sharp-* (?) to get done: # zypper install banshee banshee-core Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... [opensuse-gnome] New package submitted to G:Apps - synapse

Hi all, I've just submitted 'synapse'[1] to G:Apps. This package has all the plugins enabled except for two optional: * AppIndicator (we don't use it do we?); * rest-0.6 (I'm not really sure what this is, but it's flagged as optional and we don't have the dependency on Factory); This package hasn't yet been ported to GTK3, but I'm on it. I think everything is cool on the package. It's the desktop effects that aren't working in 11.3. I've only tried Gnome 3 from live appliances, and when I do it reverts to fallback mode. I have a GeForce 8400 GS that Gnome just doesn't like. When I try to enable desktop effects in 11.3 with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, the Simple Compiz manager tells me "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?" I decline. Trying different Gnome 3 live CDs, including the 12.1 m2, Gnome always reverts to fallback mode. The effects work in KDE with no complaints. Am I going to have to upgrade my hardware if I want to see Gnome 3? And many will comment with, "So tell us something new!" But this time I really am. Two weeks ago or so I installed Gnome3 from the gnome.org site which had gnome3 for openSUSE 11.4 (32-bit) version. Here is what it looked like when told other people in another distro what gnome3 on openSUSE likes like: http://picpaste.com/Gnome3-2A-eP9UEyIv.jpg . I was using it and enjoying it - until a friend told me that there were some new videos posted on YouTube, but I couldn't view them (using Firefox). To cut a long story short, after 4 days of trying to fiddle with my installation to be able to view ANY videos (be they on YouTube or BBC.co.uk) I decided that the best way out was to re-install openSUSE and take it from there. So, this time 'round I installed Gnome from the openSUSE 11.4 DVD (NOT the one from Gnome.org) did all the usual updates, then installed the Gnome3 repos as mentioned in this list, did the "zypper dup" song and dance act......and when I rebooted I was told that I couldn't run gnome3 and that the default gnome would be running instead. Nice, I thought, worked OK for a week+ but now I am told I am in "deep poo-poos". OK, I thought, the usual nVidia driver thing with openSUSE not detecting that I have the ability to run the required graphics. So I install the latest 275 nVidia driver downloaded directly from nVidia just like in the past.....and what do I get? I still have what appears to be the gnome 2.x appearance - but it isn't quite the 2.x thingie because I am not able to hide the top/bottom taskbars, for example. What is most frustrating is that the APPLICATIONS>SYSTEM SETTINGS>SYSTEM INFO is showing me that I have Gnome 3.0.2 installed - which is, to me, obviously total horse-droppings. The bottom line is: anyone know what I could be missing as a setting to be able to see the Gnome3 desktop which I show in the picpaste screenshot above? Or do I have to go back to gnome.org and re-install their version of openSUSE 11.4 with Gnome3 and throw out what openSUSE itself has provided on their DVD + upgrades in Gnome3:/STABLE:/? [opensuse-gnome] fglrx and recovery from a console

Can someone point me to an openSUSE Howto or procedure for recovering from the command line after a bad upgrade? I'm familiar with the steps required in Debian or Ubuntu, but they don't help here. On or about Monday of this week I was able to zypper up for the first time in weeks, and presumably got May's fglrx upgrade. My top bar has always been the wrong colour (mostly white) and the icons have been difficult to see, but after a few hours of using the new version of the driver it looked perfect for the first time, not black but transparent. Yesterday there was another upgrade, and after a restart I couldn't get to my desktop, just a black screen with the spinning progress indicator. I poked around from Console 1 for a while but did not succeed in downgrading fglrx from an rpm in my Downloads folder or getting back online from yast (since nm had failed to start). It would be nice to have a recovery procedure in these situations. Eventually I re-installed from my Live DVD stick, but that comes with its own issues since neither my video nor wireless drivers are included. I did get the latest fglrx re-installed and my top bar is back to being ugly again... a downgrade to the previous version hasn't fixed it. [opensuse-gnome] Packages for gnome-shell extensions

Hi, Malcolm has been amazing lately: he's been working on packages for various gnome-shell extensions. That's great! However, I'm a bit reluctant to accept them in G:A and push them to Factory because of the lack of guarantee from upstream about keeping extensions working and I'm afraid we'd have to offer some guarantee ourselves instead -- which we probably don't want to do. The upstream gnome-shell-extensions package is an exception to this, since it's known to be maintained reasonably well. Instead of putting the extensions in G:A, I was playing with the idea of using a new project for that (say GNOME:shell-extensions). People would easily be able to use extensions there, although we wouldn't provide any hard guarantee. I'm not completely happy with having yet another project, but on the other hand, I'm not sure if there's a better solution. Opinions?
