[opensuse-gnome] Agenda for upcoming meeting May 15 2008

Dear all, as I was told the agenda for the weekly meeting is agreed upon with reasonable lead time in this mailing list. Reasonable meaning so far in advance, that everybody interested has sufficient time to get prepared. I should think a minimum of 3 days would only be fair and supportive of a qualified discussion. So actually an agenda would have to be available and published tonight, tomorrow noon the latest. As one topic I suggest for the future agendas as closing issue, is agreeing on the agenda for the next meeting. That would give everybody plenty of time to get in shape. Casual P.S. [opensuse-gnome] RFC: changing the default keybinding to switch keyboard layouts

Hi, This is all about https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=373197 Quick summary: for some reason living in X and difficult to solve at the moment, the current default keybinding to switch keyboard layout (Alt_L+Alt_R) does not work and can not work. Since it's not easily fixable, we can change the keybinding to something that works (Shift_L+Shift_R, for example). At least, it will work. But on the other hand, this will break user expectations for users who are used to the current keybinding (and we'll likely switch back to Alt_L+Alt_R in a future release, once it's working). The less worst solution, IMHO, is to change the keybinding for now and, if possible, hide the non-working keybindings, so people who care enough to look at the options can only select something that works. [opensuse-gnome] RFC: how to open the main menu with the logo keys

Hi, I've been working on bug 372423 [1] for a few hours now. I originally thought it wouldn't be too difficult -- yeah, don't laugh, I'm naive ;-) Basically, the bug is about a patch that we have in metacity to open the main menu with the logo keys. The problem is that this does not work well for all keyboard drivers, as the keycode returned when a logo key is pressed can change. And it's hardcoded in the patch. A possibility is to use the xkb definition to know what is the keycode for LWIN/RWIN. Here's my latest comment, proposing something else: == So, I played a bit with all this. It's kind of hard to directly use LWIN/RWIN, and it would make a huge patch for a feature that will never get accepted upstream. Also, note that we disabled this behavior by default in openSUSE, and it's only active in SLED. An alternative approach is to consider that the user who wants to use the window keys to open the main menu won't play with XKB settings. So we can consider that Super_L and Super_R are the window keys. Then, it's just a matter of creating a new gconf key: /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu_list. This key is a list of strings, and we can put Super_L and Super_R there to get the same results. In terms of openSUSE, it means we just drop the patch and do nothing. In terms of SLED, it means adding a new key in gconf2-branding-openSUSE. I'll ask on the mailing list to get feedback on the idea. == I think it's really much cleaner, simpler, more maintainable, "lots-of-other-words"-er to go this way. Opinions on this? I mean, with the applet Volume Control you get the volume control slider simply clicking in the icon. With pulse audio, is necessary to open the applet, select volume control, then select the tab output devices and then you are able to modify the volume. This should be easier. Hi, What do people think about changing the default value of /apps/nautilus-open-terminal/desktop_opens_home_dir to TRUE? This key controls what happens if you open a terminal with a right-click menu on the desktop. By default, it opens the terminal in ~/Desktop, but with this key, it will open the terminal in ~/. I've no opinion on this since I don't use nautilus-open-terminal, and both values have some drawbacks (if set to TRUE: it will not work as expected if you want to manipulate a file that's on the desktop; if set to FALSE, it will not open the terminal where you want if you use this feature as a kind of terminal launcher). I am not sure how pulse audio came about in the first place. I am not using it ( and not willing to ) and I think there are quite a few people thinking likewise. This should by no means be a default installable item. It would help probably if there was a discussion on what packages _need_ to be installed by default. Maybe even a decision during install what the machine is going to be used for. I vote for usability and ease of use, not accumulation of all the latest gimmickry. [opensuse-gnome] Slab network bit

captain_magnus and I were kicking around thoughts on the Network bit in 'Status' on slab/g-m-m this morning. We considered that for systems running NetworkManager, the tile is basically redundant but it obviously needs to remain for people using ifup. So, is it possible to do the following: * With NM, just provide the information as text[1]. * With ifup, retain current behaviour[2]. Any thoughts? I'm proposing that we ship openSUSE 11.0 with the GHashTable optimization patch [1] applied to our GLib. I've been running it for a while, and various people have tested it, with no problem so far. The main benefits are reduced memory fragmentation, some memory savings, better locality and a slight speedup in some apps. This is particularly noticeable in Evolution. What do you guys think? I can submit it to factory if you agree.
