To the Testing Core Team: As you know, we have been discussing what we might do to increase the number of testers, particular as we approach the final release. The statement below will be sent to the openSUSE-project mailing list. If you wish to have your name added to the "proposal supported by" list, please let me know. Thanks, Larry ============================================================================== This is a request for changing the name of the MS6 release to Beta. The Testing Core Team (TCT) discussed the general problem of testing of new releases. With openQA, the probability that Factory iso's will boot and install is greatly increased; however, with the current system, many users do not start testing until RC1 is ready. As a result, there is very little time for detecting and fixing the bugs that will only be seen with a workload that is diverse. Such early testing will be particularly important for 12.1. Not only have we regularized the release schedule and naming scheme and need to follow through with a high-quality product, but we are behind due to the early build problems. The TCT considered several possible changes to entice earlier and broader testing. The schedule does not have much flexibility to increase the time between the RC1 and GM releases, thus we probably need to indulge in some 'social engineering' to get earlier testing. We could change from 6 Milestone and 2 RC releases to 5 and 3, respectively, without tampering with the total time. Alternatively, we could rename from MS6 to Beta. The TCT favors the latter option. It might mislead the users/testers a little regarding the quality of the offering, but I don't think calling MS6 "Beta" is misleading. By most definitions, Beta means feature-complete and free of huge bugs - we should be able to get that with MS6. A beta release should attract more users. In addition, many of us start full-time usage with MS5 or MS6, thus we know it to be usable for many people. In the guests /var/log/messages I get this entry: vmsvc[2240]: [ warning] [vmtoolsd] The vmsvc service needs to run inside a virtual machine. So apparently the open-vm-tools do not recognize the guest virtual machine as a VMware guest. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE 11.4 or 12.1 MS2 x86_64 with kernel 'default' 2. Install open-vm-tools and vmware-guest-kmp-default 3. Try to start vmtoolsd Actual Results: vmtoolsd will not start and give this error in the messages log vmsvc[2240]: [ warning] [vmtoolsd] The vmsvc service needs to run inside a virtual machine. VMware / GNOME 3 mystery

I have two machines, both running openSUSE 11.4 with GNOME 3 desktops. Both are 64-bit with 4 GB of RAM and both have VMware Workstation 7.1.4 installed. One of them works fine (a desktop) but the other, a laptop, has a bizarre issue. When VMware Workstation is running, at certain unpredictable times, the desktop logs out all the way to the login prompt, killing the VMware processes. I know a little bit about what's happening - when I use the GTK libraries that come with VMware rather than those in openSUSE, this doesn't happen. There's an environment variable setting VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" that does this, and when I have that set, everything works. Two questions: 1. Has anyone else seen this? I'm going to explore the VMware forums to see if they have any clues, but since I have a workaround, I'm guessing VMware Workstation isn't using the newer GTK libraries from GNOME 3 correctly and there's nothing broken in openSUSE. I don't know why this should crash the whole session down to a login prompt, though. 2. Is there any way I can figure out what's happening in more detail? It's very sudden and I haven't seen any crash dumps anywhere. The Testing Core Team will hold an IRC meeting at 17:00 UTC, June 27 on our usual channel. Mext, we will be discussing our experiences with 12.1-MS2. Next, we will discussing the draft of an Email requesting that 12.1-MS6 be renamed to 12.1-Beta. what update?

Hello I try the 12.1 with factory since nearly the beginning (updatting from 11.4 - first time I see factory working so well so early!) but now I wonder how I may do the dayly updates. I have to use a kernel 2.6.39, because it's the first one to have the poulsbo driver I need for my display. Usually I do "zypper up" every day. But I noticed that if I try "zypper dup" I get a lot of broken dependencies that would surely break my install. Fresh Factory Install on i865G

I did several in recent days on i915G and i945G without memorable incident, all minimal X via HTTP started by Grub launching the 30 May initrd & linux. I followed installation by selectively installing minimal KDE components using zypper --no-recommends. All seem good for such early milestones. Today I tried the same on i865G, but with an 01 June installation linux/initrd. Right off the GUI hung, no keyboard, no mouse. I retried with nomodeset, which got me through the install. Since installation completed, X has been working without nomodeset on cmdline. On all, 96 DPI is being forced, which I find despicable. :-( Luckily, a DisplaySize entry in 50-monitor.conf is enough to overcome it. :-) Too bad the only web browser that respects it any more is Konqueror. :-( -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." The Testing Core Team held an IRC meeting at 17:00 UTC, June 6 on our usual channel. We first discussed our experiences with 12.1-MS1. The KDE Live CD has the login problem (Bug #687781) and is nearly unusable. The bug report lists some workarounds. I used the Gnome Live CD for the initial install. When I added the KDE Desktop to that configuration, I could then log into the KDE desktop normally. Next, we discussed what might be changed to increase testing participation so that the workload might be diversified. We think there is increased testing with the RC1-2 releases, but many of the bugs reported at this stage are not fixed by the time that the Gold Master is frozen. We realize that there is little opportunity to stretch the timing of the release schedule, thus we need to attract users at an earlier stage. As some testers might be reluctant to try the Milestone releases, we are proposing that MS6 be relabeled as a "Beta". We would then have MS1-5, Beta, and RC1-2 as the stages. The relative timing of the steps would be the same, only that one stage would be renamed.
