Installation report 11.2

Hi testers, Yesterday, I did an install of 11.2 with a friend. He had some old Athlon machine with an AGP NVidia Geforce 4 MX440 and a 17" CRT. isolinux proposed a resolution of 1600x1200 which we changed to 1280x1024 After install, it rebooted and started YaST2 Second Stage in X11 at highest resolution (1600x1200) which the monitor could not handle. Interrupting this with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace continued boot-up without second stage, which meant that no user-account (just root) was there. We needed to run second-stage config manually. SaX2 failed to work, so the only thing that helped to get X11 was to copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install to xorg.conf Of course X11 was slow using frame-buffer or vesa... and it took some effort to get the commercial Nvidia driver to work (the community repos via yast2/ncurses were very helpful there) Overall, I would like to see a much better user-experience in 11.3 e.g. by not having X11 run at highest possible resolution during critical parts of the installation without asking or telling the user before that (and even ignoring the setting made for the install)... Maybe Nouveau/KMS could help, too. Maybe there is some other place than xorg.conf to configure the maximum resolution of your monitor? Or some place where templates for xorg.conf sections can be found? MS7 available

Hi testers, MS7 is available now via http://software.opensuse.org/developer/ did some basic install testing which worked. On i686 I still ocassionally had some booting problem since I changed my qemu code to use -smp 1 instead of 4: http://www3.zq1.de/opensuse/video/openSUSE-KDE-LiveCD-i686-Build0625b.ogv I reproduced something similar on physical Hardware (my Phenom X4 with Gnome-LiveCD on USB stick) by giving it as boot params nohz=off maxcpus=1 mem=1000M I could not switch consoles with Alt-F3/4 from my USB-keyboard but when I added kiwidebug=1 on boot, it just started working again so it sort of avoids further analysis. So if someone else could also repoduce this, it could help making this look less like a Nessie-bug. I will push further my automated install testing work. One major point there is to enable others (e.g. in Nuremberg) to make similar test-runs. This mostly needs me to document how to setup everything, working versions and such. 11.3 Milestone 7 Desktop Backgrounds

Hi list, A couple of days ago I did a successful upgrade from M6 to M7 x86_64 using 'zypper dup'. After login to Gnome, I changed the desktop background from the existing 'Glass' wallpapers to what seemed to be the IK wallpapers on the initial 'Grub sreen's' wallpaper. I expect this 'IK' slideshow wallpapers also will appear as the new default for 11.3. That is, the Grub screen specifically showed the 'blue tone' background as shown in /usr/share/backgrounds/IK/4-night.jpg, and I was able then to select this blue one also for the Gnome desktop. After logout and re-login to a KDE4 session (I have installed the KDE4 software pattern too), I tried to find and change to the same blue desktop background. But I saw only a related green-blue wallpaper named 'openSUSE113-1600x1200'. Looking again into the /usr/share/backgrounds/IK, the latter sounds to be either the 2-noon.jpg or 3-evening.jpg image. I have two questions here: 1) Can Gnome's 4-images IK slideshow backgrounds as shown in /usr/share/backgrounds/IK/ also be used by KDE4, possibly how to enable it? 2) Does the IK slideshow change background on a running system or does it change image according to the boot or login time of the day? /usr/share/backgrounds/IK/IK.xml Rgds, Terje J. zypper dup M6 to M7 created unbootable system

This isn't specific to M7, I noticed the same thing went I upgraded this test system from 11.0 to M6 - the kernel and initrd are both updated, but lilo is apparently run to update the bootloader, so the system ends up not being able to boot. Sascha, I am traveling and the news that I have is modest, but I have a little for you. Larry ============================================ The openSUSE Testing Core Team has been busy working with the 11.3 M6 release. Although there are a few problems, the latest version is quite usable. For example, my original tests were so encouraging that I mounted my /home partition and have been using M6 as my standard operating system.
