Hello Testing Team,
i'm Sascha from the openSUSE Weekly News. So we're added your Team in
our "Status Updates" Section.
So i would like to propose, that you can send an Weekly Report to the
List, so we (the Community) can see, what happend.
Is this possible?

Hi!
Sorry that I missed the meeting. I have been testing the RC1+ build
Gnome and KDE desktops and I would like to report some problems that I
did find with it ["own experience of RC1+"]. By the way most of my Intel
945G chipset related problems [including a critical freeze] were solved
only with the very latest updates to the xorg stack
[see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615649#c11].
1. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=617651
Found this new bug leaving an ugly Xorg crash every time the game
quadrapassel [default Gnome installation] is quit.
2. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=602727
Website garbling problem reported earlier is now solved with the Xorg
upgrades mentioned earlier.
3. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=609778
Noticed this problem from the software manager in YaST (in fact created
a duplicate bug 617763 by oversight).
4. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615927
Focus stealing problem in YaST's gtk interface was not yet solved, but
the fix has just been submitted to factory now.
5. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615659
Poor rendering of tooltips with compiz enabled is still a very visible
problem, and unlike most of the other x related problems I had, this was
not solved even by the most recent updates in Factory.
6. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=617715
Reported this silly little suggestion to improve Live-CD volume names :)
7. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615646
Problem with ghost windows after resuming from suspension still persists
on my system, but the latest commit
[https://hermes.opensuse.org/messages/4386607] will hopefully do the
trick.
8. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=613822
Lastly, this is the most painful bug to see from a usability point of
view [thank goodness I use the gtk interface for YaST]. Seems like there
is no fix in sight for this "enhancement" which is now quite a bug
because of the difference in the behaviour of options in the yast2-gtk
and yast2-qt interfaces. It seems reasonable that a user would expect
his setting to remain across yast sessions. One does not change the
proxy in firefox and see it restored to some default the next time he
starts it. But that is exactly what happens with the options in YaST's
qt interface now.
Also noticed already reported bug 597162 about device-notifier widget
missing from the default KDE desktop.
On a happier note, the gimp branding and splashy branding [bug 615318]
are now consistent with the 11.3 theme [as of RC1 this was still a
problem].
So there it is, my experience with RC1+ --- not completely free of
problems but, well, that is why it is not GM yet :)
Thanks for reading, and bye

I've had the 11.3M7 NET CD rescue system fail to start on some piece of
fairly standrd looking PC hardware, after 11.0 and 11.1 had the same
problem. The error is "can't find installation source" - a bit strange
that it can't find itself any more. After the fallback to the text based
installer, starting the rescue system again from there works (except
with 11.0, which never works).
AFAIU the rescue system uses the same boot sequence as the installation
system, so I'm concerned 11.3 final will blow up on install too.
What should I specifically look out for, and which files shall I keep
for bugzilla?
It is possible that no Ethernet was connected when I tried, but that
shouldn't affect any installation from CD/DVD.
Thanks,
Volker

Sascha,
Below is my report for this week's news.
Larry
============================================
For general news about the openSUSE Testing Core Team, please see
http://tinyurl.com/24n8ufe and the links within it.
The Team held its regular IRC meeting last Monday. Our schedule calls for
a meeting on the Monday following an openSUSE release, thus we discussed
our experiences with RC1. Each of the members attending the meeting had
installed more than one instance of RC1. For example, I had done a "zypper
dup" upgrade on both x86_64 and i386 architectures. In addition, I had
done a new installation on another i386 system.
Several bugs were discussed:
* The NET install CD for i386 failed when starting udev. This problem has
since been fixed, and Build0685 boots correctly.
* A bug discovered in 11.3 M7 and fixed did not make it into RC1, but
should be in RC2. This is Bug #608166 that causes failures in setting up
an NFS client. The patched package for yast2-nfs-client is now in Factory,
and it does fix the problem.
* There is a hibernation-related problem with Gnome desktops - Bug
#615646. A fix based on upstream changes is in the works.
* Bug #615318 in which the splashy screen was messed up was also
identified by the team. It too has been fixed.
* Bug #615649 in which a system with an Intel 945G graphics adapter
sometimes freezes in Gnome has not yet been fixed.
* Bug #613822 in which YaST software management options do not persist
across sessions was filed by one of the members of the Team. This one has
not yet been fixed.
* Bug #595586 in which the RFKILL mechanism fails on an eepc900A remains a
problem for one of the Team. Otherwise, wireless seems to be working.
* Bug 602760 in which the installer reports "UI syntax error" while trying
to refresh repositories. This one remains unfixed.
Since the meeting, a problem was discovered with the Live CD release for
i586 that prevented booting. This too has now been fixed. As one of the
Team members has developed automated testing of installation, this kind of
problem is noticed quite early as he is testing every build.
Given the short time between now and the release of the Gold Master for
11.3, the Team is testing Factory iso images as well as official releases,
and we will be meeting again next Monday (June 28) to discuss out results.
Despite all the faults outlined above, I find 11.3, which I have been
running on a routine basis since M5, to be highly usable. To make 11.3 be
the best openSUSE release yet, I hope that you will try it. You can
discuss any problems in the "prerelease-beta" Forum; however, please
remember that the developers do not read that forum and you must file a
Bug report as well.

Hi testers,
on our Monday IRC testing meeting, I proposed to test current Factory
between RC1 and RC2.
Now I found
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=616940
which might affect all 32-bit systems.
As workaround, giving mem=800M on bootloader params seemed to work.
Keeping the old 2.6.34-9 kernel around would also be good.
bug looks like this:
http://www3.zq1.de/opensuse/video/openSUSE-KDE-LiveCD-i686-Build0684.ogv
Last good Build was 0682.
This once more shows that testing is much needed as it is easy for
developers to break things without noticing.
Ciao

Hello fellow testers,
according to http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap , RC1 is going to be
released in 4 days.
My automated install tests showed all 4 main install-methods
(DVD,NET,KDE,GNOME) working on both 32 and 64 bit... but only on
hardware emulated by KVM. Also application tests were rather limited.
So if you have a spare partition or computer, you could try to install
any of the current (Build0669+) isos and report major bugs ASAP via
http://bugs.opensuse.org
to ensure a smooth experience for the less technical RC1 testers.
You can get isos from
http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/
DVD isos at my server:
http://mirror.zq1.de/opensuse/factory/iso/
Note: if you use NET iso version, you need to press F4 on bootloader and
edit the path to /factory/repo/oss - similar to what can be seen on
http://www3.zq1.de/opensuse/video/openSUSE-NET-x86_64-Build0669.ogv
otherwise you would get MS7 in spite of the current build number.
I have been told that after RC2 only release-critical bugs will be
fixed. That means that anything that will not prevent installation or
software-updates, will not be adressed before the final release.
So if you want to test 11.3, now is a good time.
You might also want to check out

Sascha,
Below is my report for this week's news.
Larry
============================================
The TCT held an IRC meeting on May 31.
The first topic concerned the Team's experiences with Milestone 7.
Response time to bug reports seems to be better than earlier. Bernhard
M. Wiedemann described his methodology for automated testing of
installation, and future plans to improve the tests. The Team also asked
me questions regarding the testing of wireless. Unfortunately, this does
not fit into an automated framework; however, I have been able to test
all encryption modes with NetworkManager and the KDE desktop. Testing of
Gnome will come later.
Next the Team was polled to see who among us would be at at Linuxtag in
Berlin, and when they could meet to discuss testing of openSUSE 11.3.
We also discussed the openSUSE Conference in Nuremburg in October, and
how best for the team to participate. We recommended that Bernhard
submit a paper on his testing methodology. In addition, a
"birds-of-a-feather" session for the Testing Team will likely be proposed.
