Sascha,
I have been appointed the "Testing News Officer" and will be contributing to the Weekly News. What is the schedule? Our Deadline is every Saturday at 08:00 UTC. It would be great, if you write something ...

Sascha, Below is my contribution for this week. If you would prefer a different format, please let me know. Larry ================================================= The openSUSE Testing Core Team (TCT) has been asked to contribute to the Weekly News on a regular basis. We are grateful for the opportunity. The TCT is a group of 25 volunteers that are charged with helping the openSUSE developers test each new release. Our objectives and membership are given on our wiki site: http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Testing_Core_Team The TCT was organized in the middle of the 11.2 development cycle, thus we are still learning our role; however, it is clear that we need the involvement of the openSUSE community at large to conduct proper testing. That is why we appreciate the invitation to participate here. In particular, the community can help in the following ways: * Publish Bug Reports in the Bugzilla (http://bugzilla.novell.com/). * Inform us of testing that worked. With this, we have an idea of the test coverage. * Participate in our regular IRC meetings. See http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Testing_Core_Team/Meetings. During the development phase of a new release, our meetings are held at 17:00 UTC on the Monday following the release of a new Milestone or Release Candidate. Accordingly, our next meeting will be on May 3, assuming that M6 is released during the week of April 26. The transcripts of previous meetings are posted on the site. If there is a topic you would like to see covered in an upcoming meeting, please send a private mail to user lwfinger on the openSUSE site. Our meetings are held on the #opensuse-testing channel on the Freenode IRC Network - irc://irc.freenode.net/opensuse-testing. All are welcome. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org

The Testing Core Team meeting that was planned for May 24 has been postponed until May 31 due to a late bug that prevents systems installed from DVD or Live CD from booting. See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=607480 for details. As the NET install is not affected, I have used this method to perform both full installs and updates to a production machine and some sandboxes. My kudos to Team member Bernhard M. Wiedemann for his testing of installation and the detection of problems. His efforts should improve the details of a user's first look at a release. As the full release of 11.3 M7 will be available next week, I should have more information regarding bugs and stability in the May 30 newsletter. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org
The Testing Core Team will have an IRC meeting on May 31 at 17:00 UTC. See http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Testing_Core_Team/Meetings for details. Anyone that wishes may join us. Personally, I installed M7 on my main machine using the x86_64 NET install CD and I am using it for routine work. That installation was affected by several bugs including the faulty gtk library (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=608087) that caused Firefox and Thunderbird to crash on starting. Fortunately, the "Most Annoying Bugs" page has a simple fix. My machine has an nVidia graphics adapter that got a garbled screen when using nouveau, but that was avoided with the workaround on the annoying bugs page. One other bug concerned setting up NFS clients. Within a day of creating the Bugzilla entry, a fix was ready and RC1 will be OK. The workaround was to do it manually, rather than with the GUI. I used the i586 NET install CD to upgrade an M6 system running in a VirtualBox virtual machine. The upgrade was accomplished without difficulty and has been quite useful as I have been debugging the vendor driver for a D-Link DWA-130. The 32-bit version runs correctly, but the 64-bit one does not. The ability to try both architectures has been useful. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org
It has been some time since I wrote for the News. During the period between the release of 11.3 and the start of Milestone releases for 11.4, the Testing Core Team was essentially inactive - at least as a group. When M3 was released, I was away from home and missed an IRC meeting. From the transcript, I learned that the Xorg crashes made the system essentially unusable. That bug also delayed the release of M3 for almost a week, but it is now available. The Testing Core Team will have an IRC meeting on November 15 at 17:00 UTC. See http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Testing_meeting for details. Anyone that wishes may join us. Next week I will cover the above meeting. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org

Hi Larry, nice to hear that you are back from your time off. Yes, in the mean time there was not much activity with the testing team. Besides there was the OSC were Bernhard presented his automated testing tool. Currently I am in Thailand on vacation and can't join in the meeting (would be 1:00 in the morning) Regards Jürgen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-testing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-testing+help@opensuse.org
