I had made a simple, but useful tool at http://openbugs.zq1.de/ to avoid people working on the same issues (which would be wasting time and causing frustration). We had prepared VMs with VNC for easy starting. We had someone use KVM at home to run a virtual machine for the first time. We had someone to file his first bug on bugzilla (673629). We went through and updated 60% of all old 11.4 bugs (=132 of 219). And of course, we had a lot of fun... Would be nice to have such events on a regular basis, so 2011-04-02 is proposed for the next Open-Bugs-Day. The Testing Core Team held an IRC meeting on February 14, 2011 at 18:00 UTC. The first agenda item was our experiences with installing and running openSUSE 11.4 RC1. Each of the members present had installed the new release on several systems. No one had any significant problems. As I noted last week, my personal experiences are very good. Other than a failure for NetworkManager to start automatically, I have found no problems. I am running 11.4 on both 32- and 64-bit systems. The second item that we discussed was the large number of open 11.4 bug reports at http://bugzilla.novell.com/. The major concern is that these will interfere with the resolution of important bugs with such a short time before 11.4 RC2 is released. After that only critical bugs can be addressed. Our solution is to hold an Open-Bugs-Day on Sunday, February 20 from 0:00 to 23:59 UTC. During the entire day, someone from the TCT will be available on the #opensuse-testing IRC channel on Freenode. The plan is to test which open 11.4 bugs can be closed. If anyone has further questions, there is a wiki at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Open-Bugs-Day. Please join in the efforts. Bernhard Wiedermann then discussed the contacts he had made at FOSDEM and the extensions to openQA that will result. The first is to test Firefox by using the mozmill test scripts from Mozilla. The results are automatically fed back to Mozilla's test database. As openSUSE makes changes to the standard Firefox configuration, these tests are valuable to both sides. Bernhard also plans to start automated testing of the LibreOffice suite and will soon begin automated testing of YaST. Special News Item about Open-Bugs_Day

To the TCT: I will be submitting information about the Open-Bugs-Day to the openSUSE newsletter both in my regular weekly column and as a special item. Please review the two items and suggest any changes: Special News Item ================= The number of open 11.4 and Factory bugs at bugzilla.novell.org is very large. The members of the openSUSE Testing Core Team (TCT) thinks that many of these are obsolete and can be closed so that they do not interfere with clearing of important bugs that remain in 11.4 RC1. As the remaining time before the release of 11.4 RC2 is short, the TCT has declared next Sunday, February 20 from 0:00 to 23:59 UTC as Open-Bugs-Day. The team members and as many volunteers as possible will be reading the bugs list and testing to see which of them cannot be reproduced and closed. To entice volunteers, we have obtained 10 T-shirts to be awarded to the most active participants. The specific details are presented at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Open-Bugs-Day. The next Testing Core Team IRC meeting will be held February 14, 2011 at 18:00 UTC. Happy Valentine's day. This meeting will discuss the Team's experiences with openSUSE 11.4 RC1. Since doing my first install about 30 hours ago, I have installed the new release on 3 different instances with the following results: 1. I did a NET i586 upgrade from M6 to RC1 on a VirtualBox VM. All was going well till the host had a kernel panic. The reason is not yet known, but the host kernel is 2.6.38-rc4, and this is not the only panic encountered. Just more to debug. If this were a job, there would be considerable security. 2. After the crash, I could not recover the upgrade, thus I did a full install on that VB VM of the KDE desktop from the i586 NET install CD. Everything went well. 3. The x86_64 NET install CD was used to update from M6 to RC1 on my main machine. In an initial reboot, NetworkManager has failed to start, but it is not known if this was a one-time event. With the Configure Desktop => Input Devices => Touchpad GUI, I could disable tapping, which is essential for me as my personal capacitance always leads to unintended clicks whenever tapping is enabled. This action was much more difficult with 11.3. After running for more than 1 day with my own home-built 2.6.38 kernel, I have found only one problem. VirtualBox has not yet packaged their software for 11.4 and the 11.3 version has a set of library requirements that cannot be satisfied. As a result, there was some difficulty in building the necessary kernel module for my kernel. By using the source tree from my 11.3 system, I could build the necessary kernel module for my kernel. As this workaround only came to me while writing this newsletter item, I have not tested extensively; however, it appears that this workaround will allow me to use RC1 for general work. Once again, I issue my plea for testing. Your hardware, software and computing needs are unique - you will be testing combinations unlike anyone else. Please look at the "most annoying bug" list to see if there any killer bugs. Thus far, the only such bug that is posted is a problem with the KDE Live CD. NET install RC1 in 11.2 VB

openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 VirtualBox-4.0-4.0.2_69518_openSUSE111-1.x86_64 NVidia 7300gs I did a NET install of RC1 (i586), openSUSE-NET-Build1056-i586.iso, w/o a problem. Immediately upgraded to current build with default repos. The Testing Core Team IRC meeting was held Jan. 31, 2011 at 18:00 UTC. The next one will be on the Monday following the release of 11.4 RC1 at 18:00 UTC. In our meeting, we discussed our experiences with 11.4 M6 and discussed bugs that we have encountered. We also discussed how to improve the openQA testing to catch problems that would interfere with installation; however, this will always be problematic. For example, the x86_64 DVD from Build 1034 turned out to be too large to burn to a standard single-layer DVD. At the time of the decision to release that buid as 11.4 M6, the testing process was working on Build 1033, which did not have this problem. My personal set of bugs were mostly due yo problems with software other than 11.4 M6. The NET install CD failed to boot after installation on a VirtualBox VM, but the KDE Live CD installed OK on that same VM. The problem was with VirtualBox 4.0.0 (4.0.2 works fine). I also have one system that uses the i915 graphics driver that boots with a garbled screen, but it works with the "nomodeset" boot option. That is a kernel problem, not with openSUSE 11.4 and the bug report was placed at http://bugzilla.kernel.org.. It is extremely important to test M6 so that as many bugs as possible are found and fixed. Remember that your hardware may have problems not seen by other testers.
