How to setup GNOME esd with OSS drivers?

Hi, My motherboard, Gigabyte GA-K8NF, has nvidia onboard sound. Without the nvidia drivers I have a terrible noise. After I installed the nvidia drivers, the noise disappeared and I can play music in xmms. Unfortunately, the system sounds disappeared too:-(. After playing with it for a while, it seems to me that the problem is that esd needs to be setup to use (Open Sound System) OSS, because the nvidia driver is not an alsa driver. After I installed the driver, I had to (according to the manual) replace "alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0" with "alias snd-card-0 nvidia" in /etc/modprobe.d/sound. With the new setting, the scripts /etc/init.d/rc3.d/K10alsasound and /etc/init.d/rc3.d/S12alsasound fail to work and esd does not want to start even from the command line. How to make esd work with an OSS driver? Thanks in advance! Ivan

SuSE 9.2 and Creative Labs SB Audigy 2 Value

I just purchased and installed a Creative Labs SB Audigy 2 Value sound card model SB0400 on my SuSE 9.2 box but have so far had no luck in getting it past the configure stage. SuSE did show the "new hardware found" popup after the first reboot after the install and lead me to the sound configuration dialog but the card is not listed in the dialog and if I try to add it clicking "Add sound card" then I get "An error occurred during the installation of SB Audigy. The kernel module snd-emu10k1 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters." snd-emu10k1 is already loaded according to lsmod. I tried moving it to another PCI slot but that makes no difference. I also tried disabling the motherboard onboard sound in the BIOS setup and deleting the entry in the sound configuration dialog but that makes no difference either. I have the latest ALSA packages installed from Packman. I don't know what else to try. Can anyone help?

Quanta ZW9 Laptop + onboard sound + alsa

Greetings I was wondering, but first some background, I manufacture computers and laptops. Background finished. I am running the above mentioned laptop, which we manufacture by the hundreds. In windows the drivers give you the option to configure the type of sound mode the sound card should be run in. What I would like to know is how to configure my working sound card so that the mic jack is subwoofer/center out and the Line-in jack as the rear surround, and the audio out stays the same, This is so that I can run (brag brag Sorry :) ) my logitech Z5500 sound system. As my PC with SB Live exploded in a storm the outher day ( I was not home) and now I have no usable sound system. I have had a look at the alsa doc but am not sure what category this falls under. The archive for this list are searchable so don't blast me if its been asked before. Thanks Chad

Sound problem - works with some apps not others

Hi I have 2 PCs running Suse 9.2. The older one works fine, but this second has probems with sound. The problems are: - some apps do not work: amarok and xine in particular. Amarok gives the impression of being "stuck": the progress counter does not move off 0:00. What makes this odd is that other apps do play sound: xmms, grip, ogle. - when I use the "test" button in Yast2 soundcard set-up, it too seems to get stuck. It plays a sound, but instead of the full sample, it plays the first chord and a bit of the next, over and over and over again. I get the same with alsaconf. lspci says that the soundcard is VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60). This is consistent with what the soundcard set up says. (The PC that works has Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 20)) I have tried various settings for ac97_quirk and dxs_support, but while these change the quality of the sound, the test sample is still "stuck" (expect for some which remove it altogether). I have tried adding and removing modules snd_via82xx and via82cxxx_audio, but no improvement. (By default, snd_via82xx is active and via82cxxx_audio is not.) Has anyone got any ideas on this? The 2 PCs use NIS etc so that the family can use either and get the same environment ... except that if we forget which app it is OK to use (and remember not to play mpeg4 files on the affected machine at all), we can crash everything. Dazzle D-V Bridge I'd like to try.

I picked up something a couple of years ago that I'm just beginning to look at again now. It's called a Dazzle D-V Bridge. It looks pretty cool. It has inputs and outputs of analog (RCA jacks), S-Video, and firewire. It will convert analog to digital, digital to analog, or pass through. What interests me most is playing media (i.e., old vcr tapes) and either storing it or displaying it in real time on my pc, equipped with a 1394 card. Naturally, the appliance came with plenty of Windows and Mac software. Terrific. I know about and use vobcopy and ogle to play directly on my pc's dvd. Is there software which will read the incoming stream and pass it through to the screen? If possible I'd like to use this without buying another tv card.

915G Sound drivers for SuSE 9.2

Hi Guys, Just joined this list - hopefully it is the correct one for my question. I have an MSI 915G based motherboard and SuSE 9.2 cannot detect the onboard sound system. (CMI9880L) I have tried BIOS settings for both AC97 and AZALIA. I cannot find anything helpful on the SuSE website, nor Intel, nor ALSA, nor Google!! Can anyone please help me with getting onboard sound working. TIA, Zoltan

Hey all, I was approached by a rep from VMWare about employment. I LOVE my job and would never leave by my own choice. He asked me if I would mention that they are looking for some programmers. Kaffeine seems to have taken over all sound playing

And I can't find out where in the config it says it is going to do that, If I try to launch ANY other music player I get a message saying some other program is blocking it.. Also, and likely contributing (?) is a warning I get on startup FATAL ERROR /tmp/mcop is reachable by user .. but nothing has changed in those permissions so I have no idea what they are supposed to be, and root gets the same messages. This is since the latest upgrades to Kaffeine from Packman.. As far as I can tell no changes to the Kaffeine config file have been made. but it's pretty clear that it is the only way to play music including cds!! Well, right now anyway <VBG> -- j I'm putting on the B-mer Brothers Would you mind putting on this grass skirt?

Including subtitles in VOB files

Hi, I have (almost) no problem to extract and compress from 9 to 5 Gb VOB files from a DVD with transcode and dvdauthor. tccat -i /dev/dvd -T1,-1 | tcextract-t vob -x mpeg2 | tcrequant -f X > file.m2v tccat -i /dev/dvd -T1,-1 | tcextract -t vob -x ac3 -a0 > file.ac3 tcmplex -i file.m2v -p file.ac3 -m d -o movie.vob dvdauthor -t -a ac3+fr --chapter=0:20:0,0:40:0 -o movie-dvd movie.vob dvdauthor -o movie-dvd -T It is mainly for fun. The resulted DVD works fine but impossible to find an easy way to extract and include subtitles with transcode/mplayer/dvdauthor.
