2 sound cards howto ?

my system as one AC97 integrated sound card and a SB Live, all drivers seems to work fine. In Suse 10 update, i select my SB Live as the primary sound card, but in hardware list, it appears as the second !!! the problem is that there is no sound with KDE apps, Kaffeine for ex. How to select the sound card, apps by apps or global ? Thanks to all, Pierre

I have a stand alone JVC DVD recorder and have recorded some programs on to -RW but I want to transfer them to -R Trouble is they are in a different format to a standard DVD Does anyone know how to transcode them from .vro to .vob Thanks Dave

Terratec DMX6 Fire

Not Linux related but I thought this a good place to ask. I have a Terratec DMX6 Fire 24/96 with the i/o panel. When I connect the card to the i/o panel with a 40pin idc ribbon I get no sound from the card. The idc connectors are keyed and every thing fits OK. Q Is the ribbon the wrong type Many thanks Dave

Suse 9.3 and Sound,

I've upgraded from suse9.2 to 9.3 and now sound doesn't work. This is what i find in boot.msg : "Starting sound driver: intel8x0FATAL: Error inserting snd_intel8x0 (/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-20a-default/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) " And this is shown when i type "# modprobe snd_intel8x0" , also tried to add this line to "/etc/rc.d/boot" and "/etc/rc.d/boot.loadmodules" , and i didn't work) in dmesg frequently appears: "snd_intel8x0: Unknown parameter `joystick' load_module: err 0xfffffffe (dont worry)" When i start YaST > Hardware > Sound, i get a message: "The number of curently running cards doesn't match the number of configured cards in your configuration files. Try to restart sound system? YES NO" When i click yes, module snd_intel8x0 is loaded and playback is avelable. Can you please tell me how to fix this, please. Thanks.

Wayne, That is because ATI just recently released the internal workings of their TV tuner chip to the people that develop the interface for it. For a list of supported cards check the following page: http://gatos.sourceforge.net/supported_cards.php At this moment all of currently produced ATI All-in-Wonder cards use the newer Rage Theatre 200 chip which is not supported by these drivers. ATI has recently provided documentation for this chip, but it would be a while (at least 6 months) for anything usable to appear. The last time this happend it was an easy peasy correction... just comment out the part where it said it would play all sounds .. but this time is a little different, or I'm stupider than usual ( not comletely unlikely, been watching Wimbledon for two weeks on virtually no sleep.. and not completely caffeine infused <sigh> ) Anyway, I can't seem to locate just which one of the items is where it took over ALL sounds , so I can remove that, but leave sounds for DVDs, for instance.. Some kind wizard please help me... -- j

Bluetooth, OBEX, address conflict

Hi I upgraded from SUSE9.2 to SUSE9.3. Now I can not use the Bluetooth OBEX object push client (V0.3.0) anymore (it worked excellent in SUSE9.2). By scanning the devices my bluetooth mobile won't be detected anymore? If I use hcitool scan, the mobile is detected. ALC850 audio codec (AC'97 Audio Codecs) - SALSA 1.0.5 ??

I have downloaded ALSA 1.0.5 to support my Realtek ALC850 audio codec. I currently am running 1.0.3 which was installed as part of the distribution. Can someone confirm that this will get my audio card working ? If so, I can only find this in tar format, meaning it must be compiled. I am having issues deleting current ALSA as it is causing stability issues. How do I compile ALSA in my situation, or can I obtain an RPM somewhere. I have also found a driver at: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=… However am having issues with this. It compiles but the sound card is still not being detected. I just wonder which is the best method for me to get this working. Welcome to any suggestions.

Hi, When i opening the "Yast" in gui and go to sound card no sound card was detected and when i go to add sound card i see that my sound card isn't in the list, so that you told me i see this site "http://www.alsa-project.org/" but i don't find my sound card driver. Would you please tell me where is my sound card driver and how can i install & configure that? However the stock SuSE Linux kernel should have a driver to the realtek/AC97 card already. The ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) team provided this driver for the kernel for some time now. Places to look that might help is the ALSA-Wiki site at http://alsa.opensource.org and the alsa page itstelf at http://sourceforge.net/projects/alsa or the other homepage at http://www.alsa-project.org/ If you use yast/yast2 to install/setup the drivers what does it say? As stated earlier there shouldn't be a problem since AC97 is a standard and is included in the kernal and alsa ( now folded into the kerner for some time now). Try using yast (either in the gui or the console) and if your getting error message post those. Also - don't feel bad or offended - but a surprising number of people have problems with sound cards not working only to find out the by default SuSE (or others - many others) turn the master volume to "0" by default. Over the years many have posted "my sound card won't work" or similar only to find out that it was set to "0" and they simply had to turn the volume up (don't be offended - but you'ld be surprised how many "gurus" get caught on this one - lol). The best thing to do when posting for help is to include as much info as possible (log / error files, warning messages, etc). You really should have to compile and install drivers for and AC97 card - unless it been tweaked by the manufacturer and the default drivers don't give you access to those specific features. Try to reinstall the driver/sound card using YaST and post of you have further problems. HTH.
