Well thanks to all for your replies.
My problem fixed :)
I just downloaded the update AMD Athlon kernel from SuSE YOU and
everything works fine.
Marc try to do the same if you have the AMD Athlon kernel.
A big thanks to the SuSE people for updating the kernel :)
Hi to all.
I have a QDI motherboard with VIA chipset.
I have a terrible problem with SuSE 9.0 Pro. Although it recognizes my
sound chipset as VIA 82xx AC97 codec, it doesnt play any sound !
Not in KDE, not in the CLI, not even with mpg123...
I also get some strange kernel messages about ALSA, in the logs.
The funny stuff is that i had to change my kernel to the one shipped with
SuSE 8.2 and it happily plays sound.
Does anyone has the same problem ?
Thanks.
Hi everyone,
A couple months ago, I sent out mail helping a couple folks out with
getting RealPlayer 8 for Linux. Now, I want to tell people "don't use
that, we have something new and shiny!"
Here's an update on the Helix Player initiative from RealNetworks.
We're working on an open source, multi-format player (w/a couple of
proprietary components, notably for RealAudio and RealVideo playback).
We posted our first milestone release last month, and we've started
posting nightly builds. Details for downloading this are here:
https://player.helixcommunity.org/
The good:
* Video playback is vastly improved over RealPlayer 8 and the RealOne
Player Alpha that's currently available on
* Includes Ogg Vorbis support
* Includes SMIL 2.0, along with JPEG, GIF, PNG, and RealPix. This
allows for some really impressive presentation capabilities
(transitions, alphablending, etc). To show off what can be done using
only the open source components of this player (e.g. no RealAudio and
RealVideo), I put together the following presentation, which can be
played with the Helix Player:
Playback:
http://rtsp.org/2003/demos/oggsmil/oggdemo.smil
Download:
http://rtsp.org/2003/demos/oggsmil.tar.gz
What this doesn't show off is the ability to do transitions between
video presentations or alphablend a translucent logo on top of a video,
but you can at least start to see why it's cool.
The bad:
* The installation of this player isn't perfectly streamlined, but not
rocket science.
* Not all formats are supported yet. RealText and RealFlash are
notable omissions that are on the plan. Windows Media is not on the
plan.
* Some hangups with SMIL...for example, we've got some bugs with path
handling that keep us from showing off the battery of content we've
developed to really show off SMIL
* It's still pre-release quality. There's lots of quirks, but those
are fewer by the day.
All said, we're pretty proud of how it's shaping up. However,
development, testing, and documentation are all in short supply, so we
can really use your help. We really want to work with the community to
make Linux a great multimedia desktop system.

I have some video clips, taken with very cheap and ugly camera :)
Problem is, that there is no application that can play the sound from
the clip in Linux. In Windoze is sound ok, with no special drivers.
Address of an example file is http://linux.ee/~vagula/jalgpall.avi
Beware, file is 1,5 MB.

Hello, just installed suse 8.2 pro on this computer. Its an 700mhz athlon
with irongate/viper chipset. I have the video card working but not the
tuner or input stuff. Tried to configure it like i did in slackware, but
that seems to screw up my xf86config. I'm just looking to watch tv and
record some home video stuff through the composite video input. The suse
hardware shows this video card is supported. Has anyone else got this to
work?

Hello!
I have rescued a couple of *.avi files from a friend's win-xp system
crash ;-|.
Most files are the original downstream files from his camera. These files (up
to 4GB, but also smaller ones) can not be read by mainactor 3.5 or mainactor
5.0-demo from the suse distributions.
Kaffeine shows a black screen but plays the sound - it may be a tribute to my
weak system (PII/350).
Avi files which were allready treated by Pinacle can be handled by mainactor.
My question: Are there different types of avi and/or i need extra libs/
plugins/workarounds ?
thx frank
Hello again,
i changed the card to an Adaptec Card AHA-2920 (96001-00 A) (the screen at the
boot process tells me: Adaptec PCI) and now i have got two problems:
1. Windows 98 freezes, if the scanner isn't switched on at the boot process. After
Windows completely loaded, i can switch off the scanner (strange, but i can arrange
with that problem)
2. Under SuSE Linux 8.0 Yast2 tells me: there is no SCSI-Scanner and cdrecord --
scanbus shows no scsi-Card (it only shows the scsi - emulation of my dvd and cd-
burner). On the left side Yast2 tells me at last: You have to install the scsi-Scanner
manually.... and that i have to choose the scanner from the list ..... but there is no list
with scanners or scsi-Cards....
This is at last the same message that i got while using the AdvanSys ABP 925.
What have i to do, to install a scsi-card manually? (sorry, if it is maybe a stupid
question, but i didn't find a manual to this problem).
regards,
Chris
