Anyone know if there's newer version somewhere? It thinks I should have libvlccore4 in addition to the installed and matching version libvlc5-2.0.2-5.2 and vlc-2.0.2-5.2. This smells like an obsolete recommendation. Maybe this is a waste of time, as VLC on WinXP can't do any better than VLC on openSUSE on my 3.2GHz i945G system, but I'm asking anyway just in case there's hope. Regarding suitability for playing high bitrate Mpeg2 & Mpeg4 .ts files under Linux, anyone have experience enough to know whether almost acceptable playback behavior from VLC and/or SMPlayer could be brought to satisfactory by: 1-switching WM from KDE to LXDE or XFCE or any of the true minimalist WMs? 2-bringing RAM speed up from sub-maximum supported to maximum (e.g. DDR533 to DDR800)? 3-switching from 32bit OS to 64bit OS (assuming CPU supports 64)? 4-kernels newer than those OEM in 11.4 or 12.1? 5-for non-Intel GFX chips, proprietary drivers? 6-anything else? I've looked around some[1] and generally seen that single core Intel P4 CPUs need to run at more than 3.0GHz, but mine running @ 3.2GHz and 3.4GHz produce glitchy video playback whether with PCIe cards (X600/rv380 or 8600GT/G84) or onboard Intel video (i915, i945). Only my 2.93GHz Core2duo seems adequate, but it's in a G31/X3000 server, not a multimedia-purposed machine.
