SCSI/Scanner again

Hello again, i changed the card to an Adaptec Card AHA-2920 (96001-00 A) (the screen at the boot process tells me: Adaptec PCI) and now i have got two problems: 1. Windows 98 freezes, if the scanner isn't switched on at the boot process. After Windows completely loaded, i can switch off the scanner (strange, but i can arrange with that problem) 2. Under SuSE Linux 8.0 Yast2 tells me: there is no SCSI-Scanner and cdrecord -- scanbus shows no scsi-Card (it only shows the scsi - emulation of my dvd and cd- burner). On the left side Yast2 tells me at last: You have to install the scsi-Scanner manually.... and that i have to choose the scanner from the list ..... but there is no list with scanners or scsi-Cards.... This is at last the same message that i got while using the AdvanSys ABP 925. What have i to do, to install a scsi-card manually? Hello Paul Thank you. Problem: the only available rpm is for SuSE-8.2 (i586) and I use SuSE-8.1 (i386), hard to know which other rpm should fit. On another mail I am advised to try Lmule. I downloaded the advised rpm's but I still don't know what Lmule is and - more important - how it works. Is it a Windows emulator like Wine (not an emulator) or is it equivalent of mldonkey? I love web sites that are made for the very restricted group of people who know what it is all about. It is true that last time it took me a few days to install edonkey. Hello everyone. I don't konw if this is the right mailing list to ask about it, but since is kind of multimedia, well... I just moved to linux a couple of month ago. By the way, I'm so happy about it, and everything is just great!, thanks to everyone out there working for it. But the only thing that I'm missing from windows is kazaa... I got bittorrent, which works fine, but it's not that easy to find stuff, you have to spent a lot of time searching, and t's difficult to find some old music, or old movies. SO, my question is, what do Linux people use to download media from internet?, is there some alternative to kazaa...? Regards. Juan C. Gallardo

analog video capture - SuSE-8.1

Hello, Less than two years ago (with SuSE-7.2 I think) I managed to capture analog video signals with TV Card Miro PCTV-Rave just for fun. Image is not perfect. Unfortunately it was dual-boot PC and my son decided to install M$ XP and this nice Mickeysoft had the nice idea to erase my Linux partition - I lost all my settings it took me weeks to configure. Now I want to start all over again on SuSE-8.1. I can have a second-hand PC PIII 1.?Gb, 128Mb Ram, 20Gb Hd What TV card would you advise for analog video capture. On the Web I read that DC10+ cards worked very well but it was old cards I think. Pinnacle Studio DC10+ ? I suppose there is still the bttv driver or equivalent on SuSE-8.1. What softs are advised for divX compression. Sorry I lost all my written memos thanks to dear M$. I forgot the name of the soft I used last time to convert to DivX. I have now mplayer installed with all necessary codecs on a laptop and have no problem to read compressed .avi files. A long time ago I could see TV with Kwintv or Sawtv with the Miro PCTV-Rave card. If I have the softs I can then spend a few weeks like last time to read the tutorials. I appreciate if you give a good link to a tutorial at the same time. Scanning as user?

Hello list, after a 'insmod advansys' command in '/etc/init.d/boot.local' the Advansys-Card works (as 'cdrecord --scanbus' shows). That's allright. But if i want to work with the scanner, i have to "install" the scanner with YAST -> Hardware -> scanner as ROOT (immediatly after YAST -> Hardware -> scanner YAST shows the right scanner as 'installed' - strange, but that the fact). After that i (as USER) can use the scanner by GIMP. Shutting down the system there is the message: 'Resetting /dev/sg3' (or similar text - /dev/sg3 is the scanner) and after the next boot i have to "install" the scanner again. What i have to do, if i want to use the scanner as user (maybe) by booting the system? And is there a way to pre-install the scanner? YAST or the system seems to loose the settings while shutting down. best regards, Chris

Restoring Kmix default volumes

After suspending the notebook the kmix defaults are intermittently not restored and left at zero. I have had to unload the pcmcia & alsasound modules so that they both will work at all after resuming the box. Can someone please tell me what line in what config file may bring this all back to normal after resuming?? T/A -- ...CH SuSE On A Toshi Is All U Need 2 Drive U Crazy. Hello list, just a time ago I had trouble with installing the SCSI-scanner HP ScanJet 4c and at last i thought, the SCSI Card is the troublemaker. So i got another SCSI Card (AdvanSys ABP 925) and a cable with SCSI 2 (i think) at one end and a end with a thick fifty pins adapter from a friend as a solution. But SuSE Hardware - List does not show ABP 925 (but it shows ABP 920 and 930). If i check cdrecord -scanbus, the SCSI Card is not there. The scanner and the SCSI Card works fine under Windows 98 SE. The automatical detection of the scanner doesn't work. What did i do wrong? The cable or the card? regards, Christof Schmitt

In a standard 8.2 installation if you look in /etc/pam.d files for xmd and gdm, you'll see they call a pam module called devperm. This module reads a /etc/logindevperm file, that states wich device should have their permissions changed and to what. Moreover, they change the owner of some devices to the logged in user. This is what's changing the devices permissions. What I dom't understand is why this isn't right for you: after all it should give you ownerships of the listed device, so your user should be able to use them. I have problem with this only when/if I log in with a different user in a different X session, but otherwise I'm fine. Oh, since I'me re-sendding this, I can as well add a maybe obvious tip: if you want to give permission for the devices to some groups, you can change the ownership of i.e. /dev/video0 to root:video this way the logging-in user is assigned ownership of the device, but the other users in the video group can still use the device. Then you go editing /etc/logindevperm to change the rights for the video devices from 0600 to 0660 :-) Ciao, Roberto.

multiple sound cards with ALSA/KDE

I had a problem getting the AC97 sound chip on my motherboard to work at all with ALSA and KDE. Eventually I installed a sound card, and then got it to work by turning off the chip on the motherboard with the BIOS before getting YAST to reconfigure the sound cards. Thomas: as a first try, you can disable the AC97 audio from BIOS (hoping the BIOS removes it correctly from the PCI resources). If this doesn't work (as in "you continue to see the AC97 audio card), remove the SoundBlaster card. If with only one card it works, but you need 2 cards, we can do other tests: for example, killing off arts and testing the two cards "manually" with native alsa tools and from a console shell. If this works: - maybe changing artsd settings (first one that comes to mind: "sound IO system" to "ALSA" instead of "Auto") or upgrading to a new version of artsd could help. - If the problem is in ALSA itself, we could try using a different kernel. I think I'll try this shorlly, since I have the same kernel error messages on audio you have, and Mr. Mantel released a 2.4.21 test kernel. Also, which version of KDE and kernel are you using? The ones shipped with SuSE or some new version? If this does NOT work: - maybe yast has problems writing the 2-card setup in /etc/modules.conf. I recall something similar, but I don't remember if it was yast or some other setup tool. Try to send me your modules.conf. if this is the case, you can fix the modules.conf manually (but you'll have to never run again yast's audio setup :) Ciao, Roberto

Which audio card are you using? You can try some test: first, if you try to log from a console, how are the things going? It is the same or not? Secondly, are there any errors reported in /var/log/messages during startup? And during audio initialization? And after you delete and reinstall the audio card? Also, what's the output of the command lsmod? Does it show audio modules? Are they the right ones (the ones for your card)? Ciao, Roberto

Continued Problems with Sound

Why do I have to delete the configured sound carads every time I log in to SuSE 8.2 Professional and reconfigure them to get anything to work other than pcm from the general system. As soon as I reconfigure the sound, everything works....until I log out. I have seen other people reporting this, but can't recall a fix at the moment. Why doesn't SuSE fix this? It is a real agravation. And of course, the official response from SuSE is that they do not provide installation support for sound (They did not respond that way when I bought earlier versions of SuSE...they provided excellent assistance.) I could understand that approach if the things being affected were something unusual, but you can't even get the alsamixer to run until you delete and reinstall the sound cards. Does anyone have a solution? (You can't tell I'm frustrated with this can you?) Thomas

You could also try to ask in alt.os.linux.suse but do some searching first, in most linux newsgroups you are considderd to be lazy if you ask an question without showing that you realy have tried to find a solution youreself. Struggling with Audio CD access rights in SuSE 8.2

Hello, There seems to be something wrong in my SuSE 8.2 system-configuration. It is not possible to use KsCD and KMix as a user unless I have given as 'root' the commands : chmod a+r /dev/cdrom chmod a=+rw /dev/mixer After every boot, both /dev/cdrom and /dev/mixer only have rw permission for 'root'. My user administration says that I belong to the following groups : jrm Jan Elders 500 users,disk,uucp,dialout,audio,cdrom,video As far as I have understood, this should do the job, but it doesn't ! What puzzles me even more is that I have to give both commands everytime again after having booted. Shouldn't the chmod remain effective, also after boot ? Moreover, I'm also confused by the fact that reading a data-CD is no problem at all. With my SuSE 7.3 I did not have this phenomenon, so I wonder : 1. did I do something wrong in the installation ? 2. or has something been changed with SuSE 8.2 that I have overlooked ? Real Player problem

Hi all. I'm running SuSE 8.1 pro. There seems to be a problem with Real Player default installation. There is no text being displayed in the application. I also upgraded alsa at the pm site, and then went to pbone and upgraded all the packages related to jack, and rosegarden, ardour (not quite working yet), etc.... I can now use jack to input audio from the line with my external keyboard. And in rosegarden it does show to paths for the external keyboard. I have yet to determine if this cheap $100+ casio with gen-midi is actually capable of send keystoke output to init sound/midi sigs. The reason I mention this is because it appears a fair amount of work is going into get the sound/midi/studio stuff working and usable. But the problem is, as one might expect, it that docs for end-users are scarce and vague. I would like to contrib to making an end-user doc/howto/help but I feel I need to get to things settled. A) do I have equip that will allow me to use the software/machine properly and B) Is my machine setup correctly? So, if you might (when and if you have time) give some suggestions or point me to resources It would be greatly appreciated. One of the most basic things I would need to focus on is device setup/permissions, etc. How does one confirm that it is all as it should be? Problems with cs4236b sound card on 8.2

I have a Dell workstation with a cs4236b sound card on the motherboard. At first, I was able to configure the sound card fine using YaST, but unable to get the card to play afterward. After much trial and error, I found I was able to get the card working after using various sound configuration programs, such as kmix and amixer. So I have sound until I log off, at which point it all starts over again -- I have no sound until I go to modify the settings again. It's almost like something is being loaded by the programs that isn't loaded at startup. BTW, I tried alsaconf as well and all went well and the card played upon configuration -- in contrast to the behavior using YaST -- but still whenever I log in, no sound until I configure the card again. Might anybody have some insight on this problem? Thanks, Rob

Speech Recognition Software

Hi, Sorry for multiple postings, but I wasn't quite sure which list to direct this question to. I was wondering if anyone knows SuSE's current intentions towards Speech Recognition Software? I know that most of the distributions used to package ViaVoice, but this has now become defunct.I am interested to know if SuSE or KDE are going to try to work with any other recognition toolkit for linux in the near future. If SuSE or any of the large linux groups have chosen a speech recongition toolkit, then it tgives the rest of us in research a large indiction of which software to expect to become readily available. In some recent reading, I see CMU Sphinx as being one promising toolkit, but it is limited in a curent lack of multi-lingual support. In particular there is no readily available German Acoustic model, and a sizeable amount of effort would be required to put one together by trained linguists. I wondered why this list was so quiet... and, after an e-mail saying that the list was a good one for answers, it occurred to me that the reason it is quiet is that hardly anyone is having sound problems. <LOL> So... if anyone is 'listening'... <G> I attempted a recording on all the different applications in SuSE8.2 Personal and got some really strange results. The recorded file contains a noise spike which occurs at a rate of approximately 1.25cps(+/-). If anyone else has experienced this, I would like to know how to solve it.
