[opensuse-gnome] Packaging Zeitgeist and Gnome-shell

Hi, all, I've been working on packaging the Zeitgeist stack and Gnome-shell. Zeitgeist is a project to log what you've been doing - which documents you have edited, which web sites you have visited, which IM conversations you have had - and to then let you query that information. This of course needs a nice, graphical journal browser. There is now a branch for Gnome-shell which integrates a journal into the shell's overview. While we have a package for zeitgeist, kindly packaged by dimstar, we lack all the rest of the Zeitgeist stack - the data providers, the datahub, etc. I'm packaging all of this in home:federico-mena:zeitgeist So far it's being built for openSUSE 11.3 and Factory. For 11.3 I had to pull in a newer Glib, as libzeitgeist wants gdbus and that doesn't exist in the version of Glib that comes originally with 11.3. Thankfully, just replacing your Glib with the one that is in my repository works fine; nothing seems to break. I'm not an experienced packager, so the packages in that repository are... um... needy of review by someone whose knowledge of RPM and packaging goes beyond "cut&paste from specfiles and curse until the stupid thing builds" :) Gnome-shell is not in that repository yet; I'm still making packages for the Zeitgeist stack. I'll get around to it. Dear all, Sometime ago on IRC there was a small talk about the 'need' of a tool to configure GDM and metalgod defended it could be interesting feature. I've packaged a tool that is used by Ubuntu and you can find it here[1]. I've only found a small itch on this application, it only works with image wallpapers, which means that if the default stuff is .xml (ex: IK.xml) it just shatters. Aside from that, the functionality works. If you want to test it, please make sure your GDM default wallpaper is an image. If anyone wants to fix it so we can use it on the distro, please do so, I don't have know-how for such task. Thought it might be interesting to bring this up. My package is on OBS. [opensuse-gnome] Junior Job: registering URI scheme handlers with glib 2.27

Hi, We're going to ship glib 2.28 in openSUSE 11.4, since 2.28 should be out in December. There's one change that we must prepare for, though: the way URI scheme handlers are registered changed. Before, applications used to register themselves in gconf (see /desktop/gnome/url-handlers). The new glib won't support that anymore and will use the MIME type system. See Bastien's post for some more background: http://www.hadess.net/2010/10/new-control-center-and-you.html What does it mean for us? It means that we have to patch various packages for this, and the good news is that by doing this, we can help upstream. It's really easy to do, and I'm looking for volunteers :-) Below are some instructions. It's a bit long. And it's late here, so maybe they won't be really clear to everyone ;-) But just ask if you want to help and face an issue. Here is the upstream tracker bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=631433&hide_resolved=0 Let's take an example: Yelp. If you go the tracker bug, you'll find a bug for yelp: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=631678 We need to register yelp for the x-scheme-handler/ghelp, x-scheme-handler/info and x-scheme-handler/man MIME types. So here are the steps we'll do: a) branch yelp in the build service (osc branch GNOME:Factory yelp) b) look for the source of the desktop file in the tarball. In this case, this is yelp.desktop.in.in. c) add the MIME types to the MimeType key. If there's no such key, create one. For yelp, there's no such key, so we create one: MimeType=x-scheme-handler/ghelp;x-scheme-handler/info;x-scheme-handler/man; d) make sure that the Exec line has %u or %U as argument. This is required to accept the URI that has to be opened. %u is for only one URI, and %U is for multiple URI. In the case of yelp, we probably want %u, and we see that the Exec line doesn't have %u nor %U, so we add %u. e) to make sure you were right to do this, manually simulate the opening of such an URI. Call "yelp ghelp:evince" and see if it works fine. (We replaced %u with ghelp:evince). f) it's also important to make sure that simply calling the Exec line by removing %u or %U works. For example, if yelp needs --open to open a URI, you would use "yelp --open %u". But you have to check that "yelp --open" doesn't fail and just launches yelp. If it doesn't, then it will be a bit more complex and I suggest for now to just report in the bug that yelp needs to be adapted. f) create a patch of these changes, and submit it in bugzilla, as well as in the build service Additionally, we need someone to also patch totem with the two patches that were committed in git for this: http://git.gnome.org/browse/totem/commit/?id=74833ef98e515104a5ef10b0e59af0… http://git.gnome.org/browse/totem/commit/?id=b337849b174efd6b11304ddcdd3cfd… There will be other apps to patch, that are not tracked in the upstream bug. Looking at what I have in gconf, we probably want to patch the desktop file for firefox (to support ftp and http) and transmission (to support magnet). We could also patch xchat (but it needs to be done carefully -- I'll let that as an exercice to the reader). Hi all, to help GNOME 3 progress, I've worked on a GNOME 3 USB image to allow everybody to easily test GNOME3 without touching their system : http://susegallery.com/a/zksD5W/gnome-3 This is a first image, based on GNOME 2.91.5 and openSUSE 11.3 (so, the main distribution will be stable : this should help discovering bugs in GNOME 3 stack and not mix them with Factory bugs :) This is rough image, quite incomplete (very few applications installed to reduce its size) but it should work out of the box. Please, report any issue you found with it. One of the next steps will be to move this image to OBS, so people will be able to download it without SUSE Studio account and it should also help me to generate image. Patches are mentioned in the last comment. Note that inkscape 0.48.1 might contain the patches already, so maybe just wait for the release? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=662577 NetworkManager-openvpn. There's a commit id for the patch fixing the issue in the last few comments. [opensuse-gnome] Default 11.4 background and theming

Hi, During the IRC meeting last week, there was some long discussion about the default 11.4 theming, especially for the background. Let me try to summarize what was said: - the proposed background is similar to what you can see at http://karl-tux-stadt.de/ktuxs/?p=2677 (but with a different shade of green). - as a distribution, having a consistent look and feel is rather important: we do want to have the boot splash and the desktop background form a consistent set. - some people thought that the currently proposed background is too close to KDE: it's based on a background that got included in KDE SC 4.5, and that exists in distribution-branded versions (like the openSUSE one). See the posts starting in August at http://ivan.fomentgroup.org/blog/ - some people mentioned that upstream GNOME will ask distributions to use the upstream GNOME 3 theme, including the background for GNOME 3 (so not for 11.4, but 11.4+1). For reference, this is http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-themes-standard/plain/themes/Adwaita/back… - some people mentioned that it's important to have an openSUSE-branded background for marketing. I think that covers most opinions that were raised. I'm explicitly not telling who said what, because I'll likely misquote people ;-) In the end, we didn't reach a conclusion. I'd like to hear what people think about the whole topic, so we can come with a decision from the whole team.
