[opensuse-gnome] Teatime applet?

One of the niceties in KDE I had really grown fond of over the years is a small applet called kteatime. Looking what GNOME offers in this space, I did not find anything in what we ship, alas I found http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php/Teatime . Did I simply miss something (an alternative, perhaps) in our packaging of GNOME for openSUSE? I also did look at the openSUSE Build Service and only found kteatime which makes me think I might have missed something already offered by vanilla GNOME. If not, is there any chance to get Teatime included somehow? Hi, I tried to update the package gwibber-2.31.90-32.2 from Gnome:Apps and found a missing dependency for OpenSUSE 11.3 (possibly for more distros): python-markupsafe which can be currently found only in the devel:languages:python repository. Seems like python-markupsafe got to be added to Gnome:Apps, also. Dear All, I have been trying to build a version on Nautilus-Elementary for OpenSuse, starting fromt he Mandriva packages available here: http://suse-art.org/content/show.php/Nautilus-Elementary+Mandriva+RPM?conte… Basically, I took the normal spec file of the SuSe nautilus package and added the lementary patch from the Mdv rpm (with almost no modifications). The resulting rpm builds and works perfectly on my system. However, when I tried to build the packages with the build service I get this error: E: nautilus 64bit-portability-issue nautilus-mime-actions.c:1480 SysRq : Power Off Power down. Now, my programming skills re not bad, but not so advanced. Hello, I'd like to add the GNOME_STABLE_2.30_openSUSE_11.3 repository, may even for older distributions. Actually there is a conflict with tracker, which doesn't allow any combination of GNOME:STABLE:2.30 and GNOME:Apps (with using tracker from that project) for openSUSE 11.3, because GNOME:Apps is only built against the main repository or the factory, resulting in conflicts using both repos for software installation. If necessary I'd contribute directly as maintainer in this project. Hi, I noticed two bugs, gwibber although in the oss repo when it installs it is not dependant on python-wnck package. Therefore after succesfull installation one can not launch gwibber as per below: -- Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/gwibber", line 10, in <module> import sys, gtk, optparse, dbus, wnck, time ImportError: No module named wnck -- Second bug is the package python-wnck is not available anywhere(I can find) therefore the package gwibber is not usable at all. It was available in 11.1, 11.2, SLED11SP1 etc. Is this package dropped because some other package provides the functionalities ? [opensuse-gnome] Why don't my apps that need g-s-d cause it to autostart?

Guys, In nearly all my other desktops (fluxbox, e16, e17, icewm, etc..) I have always started the gnome-settings-daemon independently as one of the startup programs for each of the desktops. It provides the gnome-screensaver and makes all the gtk apps look right. To my surprise, you can't start g-s-d anymore in opensuse 11.3 and have it provide the normal g-s-d services when it is launched as part of another desktop (fluxbox, e16, e17, icewm, etc..) -- Why Not?? When I start gsd, a process is registered in the process table because I can see it with ps ax, but it doesn't do anything it is supposed to. GTK apps all look pitiful and no screensaver, no nada.... It looks like the g-s-d process just sits there and doesn't respond to any of the apps or desktop calls that need it services anymore. Up until opensuse 11.3, g-s-d was bulletproof. For example, as part of my fluxbox 'startup' config, I include the following: ## Make GTK apps look and behave how they were set up in the gnome config tools if test -x /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon >/dev/null; then /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon & fi ## start the Gnome clipboard manager if which parcellite >/dev/null; then $(which parcellite) & fi ## Synaptic touchpad 1.5 second delay after typing if which tpad >/dev/null; then $(which tpad) fi <snip> In 10.2 -> 11.2 this worked great and provided the gnome screensaver. No, from what I can tell, having g-s-d running does nothing. From the suse list Spok/I mean Data/no I mean Will Stephenson helped peel back my layers of confusion and show that <Spok quote> Sure enough there is no app called gnome-settings-daemon in $PATH when the eponymous package is installed. Looking at the RPM file list, 2 things stand out: an executable in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon and a service definition in /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.service This tells me that g-s-d is now a DBUS service that is started on demand. Sure enough, # qdbus org.gnome.SettingsDaemon / /org /org/gnome /org/gnome/SettingsDaemon showing that trying to access the daemon causes it to start. So the question for the gnome list is, "why don't my apps that need g-s-d cause it to autostart?" </Spok quote> And the follow-on is "Why don't my apps that need g-s-d get services from it and why doesn't it launch the screensaver anymore?" This has to be affecting the gnome-sawfish program as well, so what gives? What can we do to get this fixed? What can we use as an interim as a workaround? Thanks.. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse-gnome] Pet Peeves in GNOME

Hi! I hope this is taken in the right spirit, but I wanted to list a few of my pet peeves with the GNOME desktop in openSUSE. I want to do this so that I can help get these fixed [by tracking in upstream bugs, openSUSE bugs or trying to see if I can fix them so on], hopefully by the next release. I think it would be a good thing to list the minor problems GNOME users face generally or in openSUSE alone, and I will list them somewhere in the Wiki [probably just in my user page first], so that we can start looking into these issues very early for the next version of openSUSE. Let us just keep this list to minor usability issues, so that something like "YaST-GTK vs YaST-QT [Redux]" is probably not very contextual. My pet peeves:- 1. openSUSE: Notification/tooltip theme in openSUSE -- openSUSE 11.3 comes out in a couple of days, but it still uses the same notification/tooltip theme used in the earlier versions. Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.04 on the other hand have moved to a much more elegant tooltip/notification theme [see http://static.arstechnica.com/assets/2010/03/ubuntu_darktheme-thumb-640xaut… ] which does add some beauty to the desktop. 2. Upstream: Icon scrambling in the desktop -- Too often something like this happens: insert USB disk, safely remove USB disk, create a document "X" in the desktop (around the same location where the USB disk icon was), and re-insert USB disk. The USB-disk icon and the X icon appear on top of each other, making it impossible to click on one without dragging the icon of the other to some other place in the desktop. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=613111 3. openSUSE: The menu thing (bug 595912), but that looks fixed in Factory http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-packaging/2010-06/msg00013.html 4. openSUSE: CD drive getting locked in by the GNOME desktop https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=418944 -- Happens only in GNOME, and not on KDE. Also does not happen in Fedora/Ubuntu. Please let me know your pet peeves about the GNOME desktop in this thread. Hi all, while trying to build gnome-shell using jhbuild on a "non developement" openSUSE 11.3 system, I discovered scrollkeeper was still required by gnome-docs-utils. Since rarian provides compatibility wrapper for old programs still calling scrollkeeper, it would be better for rarian-compat package to obsoletes/provides scrollkeeper package (which is dead upstream), even if rarian is supposed to be deprecated with GNOME 3. [opensuse-gnome] [notice] More GNOME-related python packages in G:F

Hey, After thinking a bit about it, I've linked all the GNOME-related python packages living in Factory and developed in devel:languages:python in G:F. The reason is that it'll make it easy to check that everything is working fine if we have them all in G:F. Note that they are links to d:l:p and they have a devel project set to d:l:p, so they will not get modified in G:F. It's really just about making sure the GNOME we push from G:F to Factory won't break things there. Hi, This is just a heads-up: I'm removing beagle from Factory now. We've moved to tracker, and beagle is dead upstream, so the option to keep it is not really there (unless someone steps up to maintain it upstream...). [opensuse-gnome] Evince not in More Applications

I reported this issue as http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628318, but I think we should talk about it again :) Evince is one of the GNOME core applications (we even demo it in our GNOME Quick Start guide), and thus I think, it should appear along with all the other applications. I know you normally don't want to start it directly, (double-)clicking a PDF file is all what is needed. Or using "Open with" is also fine. But if you want to clean up the Application menu (I'm all for it!), introduce a second level (cf. Hi, The openSUSE GNOME team will be conducting their first community meeting, after the 11.3 release, on August 6th, 2010 - 1300 UTC. The rough agenda and the stakeholders are: - openSUSE 11.3 Release: A summary and discussion of what went right/wrong (DimStar, Vuntz, Captain_Magnus) - GUADEC Update (Vuntz) - Current Repositories organization (Vuntz) (how to get GNOME 2.30 packages in 11.2, 11.3 etc.) - 11.4 Focus and plans (The 3 champs - Vuntz, Captain_Magnus, Dimstar) - Update about Meego (FunkyPenguin) (FCrozat will also be pulled in to make him feel at home ;-) ) - GNOME Pet Peeves summary and followup plan (Atri ?) - oS-GNOME A11y goals and plans for 11.4 (decriptor/sshaw, suseROCKS?) - World Domination (all of us) - Q & A - Conveying of action-items to opensuse-gnome mailing list. If you use "Search" from the Computer menu, results appear in the Tracker Search Tool. Nice :) In our old Gnome Quick Start, we said: You can use the results lists to open a file, forward it via e-mail, or display it in the file manager. Simply right-click an item in the results list and select the option you want. Unfortunately, this no longer works. Is this just a bug or was this feature considered superfluous? The only things you can do, is moving the file into the "Trash", or opening it with the default application. [opensuse-gnome] Compiz breaks font rendering for some applications

Hi, I'm using 11.3 w/ GNOME 2.30 and Compiz enabled. I also use an application called LabVIEW which uses some ancient font rendering stuff (not fontconfig)...but which works using Tahoma fonts. Now, I've been merrily using it till 11.3 w/ Compiz 0.8.6 on a Lenovo SL400c w/ Intel 4500MHD. The font rendering for certain characters looks "jumbled up" under Compiz. However, the rendering is fine with native Metacity compositing and also without any compositing enabled. I've opened a bug report at :- https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=627335 and attached some screenshots of this behavior.
