This is just an enquiry to determine potential interest: we would be able to offer the following services: 1. EPROM burning: burning e.g. Etherboot images into BootROMs for network cards. 2. Network cards complete with Etherboot BootROMs, ready to use with e.g. an LTSP server. Would there be any interest in either of these? We would have to charge a couple of pounds per ROM to cover costs. If there is significant interest (i.e. more than one person says "yes") then we'll add it to our product range. Michael

Explanation

The reason I am so interested in the idea of community involvement on this topic os simple. Kids from wealthy suburbanite parents probably already have access (in one way or another) to computers. Hence, although their schools may be more capable of implementing some of our ideas because they have the funding and the people with the necessary know-how, it goes to the kids who benefit the least, because they already had access to computers. In contrast, the poor schools who will usually lack teachers who are comfortable with computers and have little funding teach the kids who can benefit the most. This applies for rural schools every bit as much as it does for urban schools. Heck, I'll admit it, since the goal of much of the Linux community is to make KDE and GNOME just as easy to use as windows, I don't even see a huge educational benefit to SuSE over Windows. The licensing and cost are the big benefits to linux for the schools.

Informational Interview Request

Hello: I represent the RenoTahoe Perl Users' Group, which is undertaking in a coordinated effort with others, to create and provide a model for schools wishing to add computers and educational software to their schools' assets. You may have been exposed to some similar programs in the past, and, with that in mind, I would like the opportunity to meet and discuss some of your experiences. This is an informational interview request, and I would like to keep the discussion within such a framework, if possible. It is our goal to build a model that will be available to others to follow, and is comprised of information on how to obtain computers, what steps to take to install and maintain quality educational software that does not require licensing fees, and how to attract a 24X7 Team of volunteer technical support staff. Such a model will provide schools with truly state-of-the-art Operating Systems, software, and even hardware in most cases. Cost is to be held to $0.00 for the schools, with only volunteer time and effort involved. In return, the model imposes a responsibility on the recipients to share their knowledge and experience with other schools, in order to "spread the word". Things that I would like to see from the Linux Community

Here are a few things that I would like to see from the Linux community as an educator. 1. A strong comittment from the Linux bigboys (SuSe, Redhat, and Xandros (Corel). I think that in order to make inroads into the educational community they are going to have to provide professional development opportunites for the regular classroom teacher. A teacher will use materials provided if they can deliver services to their students in a fast and effecient manner. Our time is very valuable during the school year, we need trained professional service and we don't care if it comes from M$ of Linux. 2. Software: 1. We need applications for our students (I've seen some already). It has to be cosmetically enhanced in order keep the attention of frequent video game players. 3. Teacher utility software. a. Lesson Planners. b. Gradebooks. c. Organizers. A strong comittment to rural schools. Where my mother in-law teachers for the S'kllalam Tribe in Washington State they had about 30 computers donated from a bank. Catch they have no operating system on them. I told her that it would be ideal to put Linux on those computers. They are dealing with M$ and the computers are still sitting. Lance

Friday 12 April posting errors?

Thank you to the kind individual who pointed out to me that the two postings I made to the list on Friday 12 April arrived in an unreadable form. I have done some initial investigation into causes and offer the following: Because we work in a very mixed environment, I was using a different email client (Foxmail v4.0 running on M$ Windows) from usual (Kmail 1.1.61 running on SuSE Linux). That client encodes all outward mail using Base64 encoding - which seems to have been what caused the problem. However, using all the email clients I can lay my hands on, I have not yet found another one that fails to read my postings. To help in my investigations (most of which are being carried out off-list) I should be glad to receive at the following email address aray(a)computerpark.co.uk blank emails with "Unreadable" as the subject, from anyone who could not decipher my Friday postings. (If I get a large number, then I'll re-post the original nessages from my normal mailer.) Great, thanks to everyone who helped with this. I've added it to the list info so that when someone subscribes they will receive it. It can also be retrieved by sending a mail to suse-schools-usa-info(a)suse.com. The only change I made was: Technical support questions may be better addressed for SuSe Linux and other brands of Linux in other appropriate newsgroups. Discussions that have something to contribute to A1. Techincal topics (e.g. "How to I get my new scanner to work?") are best handled on our other lists such as suse-linux-e. I left out the "other brands of Linux" part because it might be misinterpreted to mean that this list is really about getting SuSE Linux into schools instead of just Linux. Are terms like 'K-12' meaningful to people outside of the US? Maybe more generic terms like 'primary' and 'secondary' (or whatever the correct terms are, I don't really know) would encourage non-US people to contribute? -- -ckm

Hello my name is Bo Lynch. I just joined the suse schools e-mail list. I am a Computer Engineer at a public school system in Amelia, Va. We are a very small rural county, only having 3 schools. Within the schools we have approxamatly 500-600 PCs. I am a newbie to the linux community only being exposed to it for about a year now. But, within that time a have learned fairly quickly and have managed to convert almost all of our NT servers over to Suse 7.1-7.3. We also have an e-mail package that runs Suse e-mail II. We here feel that linux is growing and becoming more popular. If you think about it most schools are raising Microsoft users because that is all that is present for the students to have. We would like to expose our students to both the microsoft and the linux operating systems. Do you know of any good educational programs that run on linux. Do you know of any good educational programs that run on linux?? If you do please let me know. Also if you have any ideas or comments I would love to hear them. samba

Morning I have been trying to get samba sitting in our active directory. The main idea is to eventually sit our users home directorys on samba servers and leave the active directory doing the authentication, policies bit. I've set up a test system using mandrake 8.2 and the latest samba rpm that comes with it. I used the instructions here http://de.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/htmldocs/winbind.html I've successfully joined (I think) the samba server to the active directory and on the login screen I can see a full list of all the active directory users but cannot authenticate with any of them. I tried creating a home dir for one of AD users on the samba server but couldn't change ownership to this user and couldn't mount the home dir from a windows machine. Has anyone come across this before and/or could offer some suggestions on what to try next. TIA matt

Hi all, Government offices in Europe already have detailed plans to move substantial parts of their (office) IT platforms from Windows to Linux, or already did this. The Bundestag, which is the German parliament, is a good example; they already moved their servers to Linux, and are now working on their desktops to move these too. I thought some other European countries also had plan, including my country. Schools are a different story. Here in the Netherlands, where I come from, most teachers in primary and secondary education are computer illiterates. They weren't trained to use computers in their daily practice, and most of them hardly know how to work with Windows, left alone Linux. The younger generation of teachers start using computers as a new method of teaching children. But it still is more for fun than it adds up to their knowledge. Hope this respons give you people in the US (and elsewhere on this globe) an idea of what's happening here in Europe. I've been reading this thread with a growing sense of alarm at the prospect of trying this task myself. In the past, I have always used 'Drive Copy' to to copy Windows based HDD's. This has been excellent an extremely easy and quick. About nine months ago, I bought a copy Norton Ghost (about £30). This does much the same and a bit more too. It claims to support Linux as well as NT, XP etc. I have used it several times on XP and would thoroughly recommend it. The Linux options in the manual, are not as exhaustive as with NT/XP but it should do the job without any fuss, I would have thought. And quickly too. Does anyone have any experience of this program in conjunction with Linux?

Moving Linux to a larger disk - how?

OK, I have a new 60GB drive to place on my 20GB Linux box. Don't get excited - its only IDE. I thought I would reclaim the 20GB for some lesser role in life. Is is best to do a re-install and then somehow (how?) move the settings from the old drive to the new. -Or- should I format the paritions (how exactly) and then copy (how? if I want to keep acls etc) data from old to new drive. And do I then need to make it bootable? (As usual, you will gather from this that my ignorance knows no bounds) - and BTW - are we going to get a special offer price on SUSE 8.0?
