For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. Connecting LINUX to NT server

OK - I'm trying to do it back to front. We have an NT box (several in fact...) which are part of two domains (admin and teaching) If pupils use LINUX it would be handy if they could connect to their NT account. Root can create a 'mount' using mount -t smbfs //netserver/usershare /home/username/NTmount but ordinary users can't create mounts in this manner. And administrators can't do it faor them as they don't know the passwords. Is there a way to allow users to connect to NT shares with SAMBA? -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School

That sounds like worth a try. I sort of forgot that LINUX can have a file 'executable' but not 'readable' So the password should be safe.....? As long as the script does not 'abort' when root has access leaving the user with root access..... I use the O'Reilly apache and DNS books very heavily (will get around to buying the sendmail one too eventually ...) Did you know that for a monthly subscription you can read up to 5 ORA books online (and change which 5 every month ...)? Could be a useful reference for all you IT technicians out there ... (BTW - I don't work for ORA or anything, I just like their books ... they also send me books to review for the LUG library from time to time too ...) Kevin.

Hi all Is anybody our there using the ndtef exam board? The reason I ask is thier reluctance to acknowledge the equality of wordprocessors and desktop publishers at a school level. part of the exam requirement is the ability to import text from a wordprocessor into a dtp package! this would effectively eliminate the use of staroffice and several other systems. So, if anyone knows of the existance of a dtp package under linux please let me know. help with configuring Apache to access user directories

Hi all, Can anyone offer some hints as to how to make public_html folders available for access by apache? I'm trying to set up a server in which users can create html files within a folder (eg: /alanh/public_html) which can be made available on the school intranet. I've checked the folder permissions and they seen ok, httpd.conf seems ok but I get the following errors when trying to access the test html file via lynx :- lynx 192.168.1.10/~alanh !Alert: http/1.1 403 Forbidden! I'd like to get this working - any hints / help / etc? I've tried this under Suse 7 and Red Hat 6.1 with the same result so it seems like i'm making a fundamental and possibly obvious error here.... The purists among us would promote Tex or Latex, these allow you to define EXACTLY how the page will look like. However I suspect that you are after more of a GUI environment. Anyone know what happened to Framemaker? Simon Wood
