[opensuse-edu] openSUSE-Education 1.0 (RC2) for 11.0 is ready

Hi Developers, Testers, Users! This is just to ask for "final testers" before we made the big announcement over the weekend. The openSUSE-Education Add on for openSUSE 11.0 is ready! You can either download the ISO image from here: http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/ISOs/openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-… (md5sum: 8b9a756f775c052ac38d47fe7d46361e) Or add the online repository as installation source: http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/repo/1.0/11.0/ (Note: Please re-add it if you've added it bevore - just delete the current repository via YaST and re-add it.) --------- Other IMPORTANT Notes -------------- 1) As discussed on the last Meeting[1], we're now using http://devzilla.novell.com/education/ for bugreports which requires an openSUSE-Account for filing bugreports. 2) I've nearly finished the big move from Education:desktop and Education:server to our new Build Service Repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Education/ Nearly every package is moved to the new location - I just left the ones which should be discussed in the old Education:desktop repository. 3) SVN is also moved and now on https://forgesvn1.novell.com/viewsvn/education/ More information is available in the Developer-Wiki: http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Education As you can see: we're doing again a great step forward :-) With kind regards and happy weekend! Hello, This artwork is amazing! I love the chalkboard. Does it make the logo to large? I think the logo needs to translate well to different sizes and text doesn't do that well. The changes in the body of the Gecko are too much of a departure from the "branded" openSUSE gecko. We should not distance ourselves in any way from the logo's used by the host product. Adding the Mortar board to the character is a universal symbol of education, http://louisville.edu/provost/wroffice/mortarboard.gif This one in green would be cool! Hi This mail is for all statistic fans: Just to show you what traffic we produce with openSUSE-Education during ONE MONTH ! Since Aug 25 (server upgrade) we've the following numbers: 167 downloads of openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-SLE10 ^^^^ includes all Alpha isos 25 downloads of openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-10.2.iso 54 downloads of openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-10.3.iso 1789 downloads of openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-11.0 ^^^^ includes all Alpha/Beta/RC isos Even if you reduce the numbers substracting people who abort the download - keep in mind that poeple can also download the ISO images via ftp.suse.com Counting hosts which downloaded the content file of the repository: 117927 hits for the 10.2 Online Repository 378631 hits for the 10.3 Online Repository 301925 hits for the 11.0 Online Repository Interesting: just 20 hosts use FTP to access our online repository. [opensuse-edu] RFC: What is the best layout for http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Applications/Desktop ?

Hi, all! IMHO, the current layout [1] is unusable, since it's too overfilled. My proposal is switching to something like this [2]. So we can just add Gnome, KDE icons, and may be some other information. And we can change headers name too packages' categories. Also I prefer this straightforward design [3] instead of our one [4] with many differently aligned blocks. [opensuse-edu] Update Repository for 11.0?

Hi @ll After some discussion with cyberorg in IRC, I tried to create an "Online-Update-Repository for openSUSE-Education" which should: * give developers the ability to update packages for a released openSUSE-Education version (like the 1.0 for 11.0 which is in the queue for end of September). (Note: the Repositories on download.opensuse-education.org are frozen like the official openSUSE ones after a release. And redirecting people to our development repos in the Buildservice breaks sometimes more than it fixes.) * give users the same "look and feel" like the official online repository from openSUSE - including a patchfile with a userfriendly description of the fix. ...and hey: looks like it works... (-: 1) I've adapted the openSUSE-Education-release package in the Buildservice. So if you like to test our new online repository, please download and install the latest RPM: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Education:/desktop/openSUSE_11.0/… 2) Afterwards, you should see a new enabled repository called "openSUSE-Education Updates" if you look via "zypper sl" on the commandline or via "YaST2 Software-Repositories". This step is just to be shure everything works as expected. 3) Now start looking for new patches using the "openSUSE Updater" panel applet of your prefered desktop (KDE, GNOME, whatever). In the end, you should see a "new" patch called "Netbeans" with the summary: "Dependency fixes for Netbeans". (I'm not shure if you should install the netbeans package from the current openSUSE-Education repo for 11.0 before to see this patch.) 4) Try to select the netbeans patch for installation and give it a try (this should fix the wrong dependency for the netbeans-ruby package). This should update your current netbeans packages. Now we can provide even user friendly patches like openSUSE... :-) What's needed from developer side? 1) a bugentry (even in our, the Novell or other Bugzillas) 2) a patched and tested package(s) containing the bugzilla-id in the changelog 3) a patchfile containing the following informations: * Patchname (could be the same as the package name) * Summary (1-line summary of what is fixed) * The referenced Bugzilla-ID(s) * Description (A user friendly description of the fix) With this information, I could start a small script which: * sign's the RPMs with our Education-Key * put's the RPMs into the right place * creates the XML-Patchinfo * updates the repodata of the update repository * brings all together on the right place: http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/updates/1.0/11.0/ What's currently NOT implemented? * A Webfronend for the steps 2 and 3 - so developers need to tell *me* the name and place of the fixed RPMs (should be the OBS, normally) and the other data via mail. So any help writing such a tool which: * allows uploads of packages via webinterface (or a download information) * presents the 4 fields (Name, Summary, Bugzilla-Reference and Description) and saves them into a database * does authentication and all the other needed security stuff * ...? is very welcome!
