I am paranoid now. Should I disable the "allow all" in the config file? I am back at school now and since you are reading this it means that I have squid up and running. At the school we have 2 64K ISDN lines and we are going through DialNet, although I am using Squid to control the access and set up a cache which seems like an expensive enterprise under NT. Since I got the proxy up and running, one of the ISDN lines has gone off-line. I have not been able to get through to BT to find out the problem but was curious if I need to resolve both lines to the IP address I am with DialNet? Since I am using only one of the IP addresses they gave me, perhaps the other one has shut down? Excuse my ignornace, the IT manager is on holiday and I am a lowly IT teacher just trying to make things better... The other thing I would like to do is to set up another SuSE proxy in my own classroom so that I can deny all the computers in the room access to the net when I am trying to teach. Any ideas? I did manage to get squid working in the end and it was working rather well. I had to leave school after that so will not see until Tuesday how it is fairing but thanks for all the help to date. I now need to read up a bit on tweaking it and adjusting some of the access priviledges and caching functions. It is all quite new to me but mans and faqs will help out. I suspect that I will be steering the school more into the good ship Linux especially since the new Star Office seems quite robust. Any more squid top tips greatly appreciated and I will feedback any worthwhile discoveries. server won't serve

I've set up a SuSE based fileserver to replace an older RedHat 5.1 server. I brought both servers home so that I could transfer the users data but on starting the old RedHat server I've discovered that it will not allow me to connect from another machine. The lights on the NIC go out when it reaches runlevel 2 or 3 and an error message along the lines - cannot open http port - FATAL - crops up when samba is started. I can ping 127.0.0.1 ok and ifconfig reports eth0 as ok. Anyone any ideas where I should start looking for the cause of the problem. Dave Williams

Hi Roger and all, I've just got a copy of the October PCPlus, they've got Windoze and Linux versions of StarOffice 5.2 on the cover cd's, also Samba and MySQL. We have NT as the main server but I am trying to replace an existing NT proxy using OSS with SuSE/Squid. I have the machine configured and it is going out through our dialnet hardware server but the local Win95 machines get an error message saying that access is denied to Squid. My colleague is looking for a free Windows proxy so the race is on... Hi, Have you made sure that the Win box is trying to access the right port on the Squid box?
