For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. Chris, Provisional times: start : 8:45 - 9:00 finish : 16:00 - 16:30 It is possible to arrange fairly reasonably priced overnight accommodation (for 40 people) in the conference centre at Danbury (where the conference may be the next day) for approx £35 per night B&B if it is booked through us. Hi Chris, I can confirm that the location is booked - there are 2 venue's which have been arranged (the one mentioned and one very near the train station in Chelmsford itself). Which one we use is dependant on the volume of interest. I'm sorry if it is difficult to get to but we are using University buildings to keep the cost down (as we will only be charging delegates what it costs us to put on the day) and to ensure the quality and reliability of services and internet connectivity. I know there is a very active collection of OS users in the North West and it is not our intention to alienate anyone but we are restricted to our locale for the first conference. It is our hope (if this one is a success and there is demand) to organise one elsewhere in the country at a later date. We are trying to be as accommodating as possible so if there is anything we can do to make sure more people come we will (short of re-arranging the venues ;)). We can co-ordinate car sharing if required and we have access to university transport to ferry people back and forth from train stations or Stansted Airport (which is only 20 miles from us). My old subscription was on an account which was popped from a remote mailbox. My new address is on our own mail server so all mail uses the smtp protocol. Sorry if it was poor shorthand. Open Source in Education Conference

I thought that you all may be interested in a conference we are organising. Feel free to forward this on. Find the details of the conference below. First an introduction for those who don't know.... My name is James Spedding and I work for Anglia Polytechnic University. I would like to invite you to a National Conference which will explore the use of Open Source software in the UK Primary and Secondary Education Sectors. It will run on the 4th April 2003 and the cost is expected to be under £50. Delegates from all elements of the educational community are be invited to attend this one day conference to be held at Danbury Park Conference Centre, nr Chelmsford in Essex. Speakers already include Professor Stephen Heppell of Ultralab (http://www.ultralab.ac.uk/people/stephen_heppell/), Diana Laurillard of the DfES, Theo Wright of BECTA, Roger Whittaker of SuSE UK, Malcolm Herbert of Redhat and Christopher Dawkins - network manager of Felsted School (http://www.felsted.org/curriculum/ict/network.htm). The focus of the day will be three-fold: to raise awareness of open source as an alternative solution to evaluate its suitability for use in education and, to examine and learn from the implementation of open source in educational settings The intention is to have keynote speakers in the early morning and afternoon followed by smaller seminar type groups discussing the practical implications of using open source and its various configurations. If you are interested in attending or have any ideas you want to share please contact me via email or on (01245) 226930 A major thread of the conference will be experienced-based presentations of Open Source implementations. At present I am still looking for one or two more speakers to do a 20 minute presentation about how they chose, implemented and are using (both the pro's and con's) open source solutions - from back end servers to desktop roll-outs. If any of you might be interested in this please contact me off list. This is not just a conference for those 'in the know'. As much as possible I want to open this out to a broader spectrum of the educational market. Hopefully we can change a few ideas about what OS is and what it can do! No Mail

Just a thought, but I recently changed from popping mail to smtp-ing it. I was unsubscribed automatically and without warning because my mail server refused to accept a probe message. Also couldn't understand why I received no messages until I looked closely at the server logs. But perhaps we're all just too busy! Things seem eerily quiet. The buzz of communications has suddenly stopped, and for a whole week. At least it has at this end, for me. (?) Not that I have nothing to say and want to just the break the silence, rather just checking that the mechanics for the forum messages is still functioning. Hopefully, I should see my message ping back to me in a couple of minutes. If it does then I will assume all is well and that everybody has got their heads down working at don't want to be disturbed. Excuse the intrusion, if this is the case. Bruce.

I assume that your 'checks' are what led to me getting an e-mail from 'Pebble Rock'. http://pebblerocklimited.users.btopenworld.com/sun.htm £23 less 17.5% even ! <snip> We are still having some setting up problems with StarOffice6.0 ie. where to put templates, galleries and config files but I'm becoming happier with it as an MSOffice replacement at KS3 and 4. <snip> David, I have an almost glitch-free install put together for OO.o to run over NT/win98, as part of my phased replacement programme. Don't know what OS you are using but if I can give any pointers from what I can remember of my July installation, let me know. I still have one problem left, that of the 'sversion.ini' not holding properly. This still needs fixing, otherwise it seems fine. When the summer holidays arrived, I thought that Sun would be releasing a neat network release for schools before long and I would put that on instead. Obviously, from what you say, the 'distro neato' hasn't appeared.
