I have pondered the relative merits of thin-client solutions to the "fat
client" alternative, and wanted some views on its merits (it was previously
discussed here on this list in connection with OSiE and from then I have
looked into it more).
For example, I have noticed that the thin-client model requires a bigger
server and one that after formation can only appear to handle up to 30
clients with significant power. Does this raise the relative cost savings as
opposed to using a fat-client model, or do away with them altogether. Or is
it that the thin-client model does in fact save money both on server and
clients?
How does running thin-clients work when, say, multimedia useage is needed?
Any takers?
TIA

If you are running an Xserver with
export DISPLAY=WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ:0.0
it is possible to use another user's display to
make your tasks appear there - simply by using their
IP address.
This could be useful - but it can also be annoying when
some abuse it.
How can it be prevented?

hi all
as mentioned, in partnership with Sandwell EMU (LEA IT services) we will be
running a training day on the Linux Terminal Server Project, based on the
K12LTSP distribution. This will be on Thursday 3rd May and we have around 15
places available.
the day will cover:-
- overview of Linux Terminal Server, open source, Linux desktop and
applications.
- specifications, design, configuration and deployment
- building the server
- types of clients, recycled or new
- managing a terminal server solution
a more detailed agenda will be drawn up over the next week. The course will
include some training material and optionally your own recycled terminal (or
you bring your own?)
The basic cost will be £25, to cover room rental etc during the day, but we
are hoping to have some cheap bootable NICs available on the day for people,
even a whole terminal if they want one.
This is not an official Red Hat training course, its something myself and
Keith Chandler from Sandwell have put together. We will also hopefully be
running a training event in Wales in the near future.
Sandwell EMU is located 5mins from Junc 2 of the M5, as fairly central to the
UK. There is plenty of cheap accomodation nearby as well. In the first
instance, the course will be available for school, LEA staff, but if there is
space we can accomodate some commercial people as well.
first come first served, email to me (Malcolm) please to reserve your place.
thanks
Malcolm

I was certainly very interested in this. I have certain questions about it regarding the server spec recomendations, they seem way above what would be required even for windows 2000 terminal server. That aside, me for one am dead keen on delving into this one a bit more.I`d certainly get up and running quicker if someone a bit techier (I`m sure that is a word) than I showed me some of their findings/tips first.
Kind regards to all

I /think/ I would be interested too... The trouble with Linux
(or just one of them?) for newbies is the proliferation of
clever "in" abbreviations; some of them are /really/obscure.
Since this list is also aimed at (relative) new converts, or
prospective ones, could we try and translate as we go?
I know all computer systems have their own argot, but the
nature of the beast is we are mostly familiar with the old
ones... Linux has a new set all of its own.

My understanding of the situation is as follows:
SDU - Standard Dialup Account
NDU - Network Dialup Account
When you make a dialup connection to Demon, their Mail 'SmartHost' as they
call it, attempts to make a connection via SMTP to the PC or router that
established the connection. If you have an NDU (not sure about SDU) you can
advise Demon of a specific IP address to make the SMTP connection to. This
will be one of the addresses allocated to you when you signed up for the
NDU. The DNS settings used will be demon-gw.<customers domain name> for the
router and mailgate.<customers domain name> for the expected smtp server.
If the 'Mail SmartHost' is able to make a connection (remember SMTP doesn't
usually require a user name or password), then it forwards all of your
waiting mail through this SMTP connection.
If it can't, then the mail just waits in your mailbox, until expiry when it
is bounced back to the sender as 'destination not reachable'.
If prior to message expiry, you connect with a pop3 client such as 'Outlook
Express', then your messages are downloaded (and optionally deleted from
Demons SmartHost depending upon your mail client settings).
Your dialup password and pop3 password do not have to be the same, they can
both be changed at https://www.password.uk.demon.net/webpassword.cgi. Your
pop3 password is only ever used to pull mail from the pop3 server via a pop3
connection. You don't need a password to recieve by SMTP since Demon will
only forward to one of the IP addresses that they allocated to you.
We have an NDU in the office, I'm not sure if the above process is 100% the
same for an SDU.
Hope this helps

Chris thanks for the tip
Currently, when I connect to Demon direct from a win 98 PC I have to supply
my POP3 password before mail will be downloaded (the same password I use for
winmail from Demon). Is it possible that Demon is only expecting be to
download mail in this way and not using SMTP?
THe Demon website wasn't that clear on this

Thanks all round for the thoughts on sendmail and demon
i'll go in this weekend and have a play with the system.
Maybe I'll take you up (Frank) on an explanation of qmail to replace

Given the speculation on whether Fen Systems (though not exclusively) has
any commercial intentions, and in response to Michael Brown's clarification
on this, I thought I would just make a few points and then move on to other
topics. It would be a shame to "drag" this one out, but I also think that
advocates of open-source and free software in schools ought to get straight
what their commerical connections and intentions are before promoting OSIE
so that visitors and clients can be clear as to the autonomous nature of the
OSIE.
Michael Brown set out, I think honestly, his philosophy of Fen System's
involvement in the OSIE very well. Fen are involved in providing a services
based provision to schools and this appears to weigh in favour of the
thin-client model. I also understand that Fen as a company would obviously
like to take advantage of the possible commercial benefits of being a part
of the OSIE, and it may well be this would be a natural business outcome in
any case with connection to this type of project, not necessarily an outcome
of advertising and proselyting business from the list, site or contacts
gained through the list.
Free software, and the Open Source Definition of course allow for commerical
interests within the open-source community and the fact that companies such
as Red Hat and VA Linux exist is proof that this model using open-source can
be financially viable. Commercial interests help in open-source in many ways
but mostly in two: (1) They provide packaging and marketing to
distributions; (2) They provide services post-sale (support, consultancies
etc). There may be more than two, but it's late in the afternoon :-) These
help move Linux and open-source software forward and provide the profit area
needed to sometimes support open-source led businesses.
On a project such as OSIE wishes to be, with advocacy and support the main
functions (if I have read it correctly), these models though useful could be
self-defeating. To allow commercial interests to offer services over the
list or from the site may begin a tidal wave of similar commercially
interested parties dooing the same reducing OSIE to a fair-ground type
offering that schools in the end would steer clear of because of that. They
don't want sales led advice (though that's good in its place), they want I
believe a site where they can find out why Linux is worth a look and will be
useful to them economically, technically and ethically.
Michael stated that Fen has no designs on controlling the site or the OSIE
in general. This should be applauded. However, how others perceive the
involvement of Fen and Michael Brown's input into the list and site should
Fen begin to advertise services through the list should be considered. For
example, at this time the list appears fairly autonomous offering schools a
balanced set of views about Linux and open-source in schools and education
as a whole and for this reason would be appealing. If Michael were to begin
touting prices for services or offering private advice etc on the list/site,
this independence from commercial interests would be lost and could lose
OSIE prospective members and/or advocates within education (of course the
reverse could be argued to some extent too).
I am not advocating the "barring" of commercial interests, for as I have
already stated the GPL etc allow for commercial input into open-source (read
"The Cathedral and the Bazaar"). What I am wary of is how much commercial
input OSIE will allow and who will set the limit and make sure that OSIE
does not, in whatever form, fall into a commercial advertisement for any one
distribution/company/ethic/belief/system/support method <add your own
here>.....
My opinion is that it may be an idea for senior members of the list
(originators etc) to work out a method whereby commercial offerings can be
placed on a separate page/mailing list appended to the osi-general so that
if a school is looking for a services based Linux solution for their LAN
they can turn to the commercial page where Fen and any other interested
non-independent entity can advertise their site and services. As to whether
in general mailings commercial business can be advertised and advised- I'm
not too sure about that one at all. Obviously this looks like a democratic
list so if I am "ousted" for this one then that's fine, but I do think it
would be very dangerous to the independent nature of the OSIE from the
outset to allow too much commercial interest which in the end will bring
financial gain to the entity, but little int he way of traffic for the list
and OSIE in general.
Thanks for listening :-)
Thanks too to Michael for airing your clarification- it helped a lot.

This is true however, it might pay to check out if your demon account is
currently configured to deliver via SMTP, POP3, both or None. This can be
checked by going to https://www.password.uk.demon.net/webpassword.cgi.
Enter your SDU or NDU account name and dialup password, login and then
