So far, Active members we have about 4. 1. I can write the charter and we can include all of those things that we talked about. 2. People that want to know how to set up a firewall can get on Knode and go to alt.os.linux.suse? Is that OK? 3. We can invite others like our UK neighbors into the group and when we get off of the subject we can direct them to the correct group. Is this OK with everyone? I wish that if anyone is "lurking" that they could let us know at least once that their are others! Lance

===================================================== I'm an administrator in a LI school district. I've been using Linux in my work exclusively for just about 3 years now; but other than a tiny hadnful of students, I've been alone. No problems though as my work in StarOffice has *always* been compatible (since v 5.0). My office machine (provided by the district) has been "Linux" for years, as are the two laptops I run around with doing teacher observations and such. Next year we will be converting one of our 6 year old labs (P166 w 32mb) to linux /thin clients/ running LTSP w/ dual 1.4ghz processors and about 3-4 gig of RAM. Should save the district a bundle in replacement cost. We've already started experimenting (thanks to a very recent graduate's efforts; we pay him to come once a week and help w/ setup) and have been very impressed with the results. Even the IT guy is somewhat excited about the project, and he's, thus far, been an NT man all the way. Our goal is to make the transition seemless as possible for users. If we are succcessful, we might extend the experiment putting all office and administrative machines eventually in a similar configuration. Hi: Hope you might add to suggestions about what a demo might want to have on it, if someone steps in front of you to see if you like the classroom model. Question should be in a reply to Bob's intro. Thanks, Tom Poe Reno, NV http://www.studioforrecording.org/ http://www.ibiblio.org/studioforrecording/ http://renotahoe.pm.org/
Hi I have been lurking for some time. I retired from the federal government several years ago and currently work for the local county schools here in Middlesex County, VA as a part time computer tech. I have 20+ years experience in unix like operating systems. We have been replacing NT machines with Linux based systems in as many places as we can. One of our NT machines was hit by script kiddies which is one reason we have switched to Linux. Linux has been a great for us. I used one machine to allow NovaNet to work thorough our firewall by port forwarding. Our tech repair request database is running on php and mysql. Staff can request a repair from any browser in the school system and we can update the database after the repair from any browser in the system. Other Linux machines server as DHCP and proxy servers and firewalls. As you can see we have only used Linux for server type applications. Thus the reason that I have been lurking here to see if there is any educational developments on the Linux platforms ...Bob bob@skyeweb.com

Hi, Bob: This is an impressive background you have. Ideally suited to helping some of us out on this list. Bob, if I have an informational interview with one of the principals in your schools, and happen to have a demo system for him/her to play with, she's going to have me work through you to decide whether that's a good idea, right? If so, then maybe we could get some input from you as to what you'd like to see walk through the door as a "self-contained" classroom demo system, that you could easily evaluate. You know, maybe throw some questions/ideas about how the demo should be setup to provide easy access to answers.
