Schools-UK howto (was: Edex)

Initially, it could just contain some pointers to where the information is, for the sorts of things schools would like to do (ie to narrow down the list of howtos/faqs and man pages that you have to digest in order to configure (say) DNS or Samba). Just a thought. I don't mind 'adopting it' for now, as a project off of the Northants LUG web site. If anyone thinks this is a good idea, I can knock up a simple 'starting page' and people could send in some submissions for the sorts of things they would like to see included. I could then fish around for contributions to actually flesh out some details. Thoughts anyone ? Kevin.

Suse 6.4 installation

I'm still waiting for my 15ukp offer to arrive but in the mean time I installed 6.4 off a PC magazine (DVD version). Despite selecting UK and English for everything I still get the German Version of Star Office on the screen. How do I remove/correct this? Having had )almost) no trouble installing LINUX on laptops and desktops I had a really difficult time - A Diamond A55 S3 Trio3D/2X card would not work (despite it appearing in the list of chip sets) failing to give a hardware cursor and proving obstinate at anything but a limited 800x600 SVGA output. In the end I gave up and put in an S3 Virge (you may gather from this that I don't pay more than 20ukp for a graphics card...15ukp if I can manager it!) BTW - What is an AGX supposed to be for? I also couldn't get the ISA Crystal Sound card to work - although a Creatibve PCI one worked fine - and it also picked up my cheap 8139 100/10 Ethernet card - so there was some good news. Getting carried away I noted that SUSE6.3 book said there was support for bttv848 Television card - which I happened to have. The update file referred to - wasn't there and despite uncommenting the lines in the hardware start up - it doesn't seem to see it or do anything. Is there an application? Edex

Hi I will admit to being a bit on the slow side, why not try Linux they said, so I did, it works, but how do I get to use the internet. Edex, our ISP, use a proxy, I can contact this through our router, I can ping alsorts of places but every time I try navigator I get: 'unable to connect to server (TCP Error: no route to host). I've tried to add in the gateway and IP address of the cache on the other side, but no luck. I had planned to replace our Apache server on a windows 98 machine, so have set up a machine with 2 cards. I tried to get the Linux machine to work through this Apache server, no luck. What am I missing Jamie (Is this a stupid question? SuSe 6.3 (I assume 6.4) is very flexible on the install. You can set it up to run on a 486 for sure. BUT, a 'standard' config leads to it running 'like a dog' in my experience. I refuse to use it on our desktops at the moment, 'cos I want a pretty interface (KDE), and apps like Star Office and Netscape. It grinds to halt on a P90 with 16mb of RAM! Adding users

I'm still struggling to devise a simple way to add large numbers of user accounts using csv files or similar. The users already exist on an Acorn Level 4 server and I want to move the users and passwords, transparently to a Linux server. I have no problem exporting the csv file but...... Anyone help with these points 1) useradd in RedHat does not appear to understand the -p option and it is not mentioned in the man pages. Does suse recognise this option and as a result allow a single line entry for a user and their password? 2) If I type useradd as root I get an error - "bash: useradd: command not found" but $PATH reports /usr/sbin as part of the path and this is where useradd is located. What am I missing? 3) Can anyone recommend a good source of information on writing shell scripts - I might then be able to fiddle around with the passwd command. Dave Williams

Eh thanks (?) DNS is set up OK, I can ping using a URL. I think my problem is that Edex have a proxy that they use for filtering, I've set up my linux machine so that it knows about our router, it can access www-cache.edex.net.uk, but anything else gives a route error: 'unable to connect to server (TCP Error: no route to host). I'm using Apache to host our web site and do intend to use Squid, but this is one giant leap for teacher kind. I use 2 cards as we have only been given 60 odd IP addresses by Edex, so use our own set, and want to keep our network seperate/safe(?). Thanks for the pointer to the squid string, 'll try that.
