'zypper dup' to 11.2 RC1 broke the Internet connection

'zypper dup' is a convenient live distro upgrade - when it works. But on my two home machines, x86_64 and i586 respectively, this caused a broken Internet connection during/after the upgrade from 11.2 M8 to RC1. (In a previous distro upgrade to M8, this was no issue on my i586 machine). I tried to access web pages with Firefox or Konqueror after the RC1 upgrade, but with no success - just something like 'unknown server' or 'unknown host' were reported back. Searched for 'online update' indicated that the url to the used repositories were not longer useable. A quick look at the DHCP setup with 'yast2 network' 'seemed' to be ok. The Ethernet connection and ADSL line was ok however, and my OpenVPN connection over the ADSL-line worked as before. I was not able to find out what was wrong. Both cases ended up with that I had to download the NET mini iso, boot the CD and made a new RC1 installation - which reestablished the Internet connection again Similar experiences with 'zypper dup'? As I'm quite new with using 'zypper', I wonder if I made something wrong? Are the some cleanup or rapair options to run after the distro upgrade? Are there specific network setup parameters or config files I should have checked for? Rgds, Terje J. SAX2 or screen controll in general

Hi, It's not really good that it's so hard to find the gfx configuration. I have seen it first hand now that it's not available easily enough. 1. It should sill be within Yast, this is where all users look. 2. If not, then it should be visible on the (KDE) menu on the "Computer" tab. 3. If kept under the menu-Applications-System-Configuration it should be called something else than "Cinfigure X11 System" . No user new to Unix/Linux would even understand what X11 is. Any comments on this? Yeah, I am probably going to do some performance testing ... Sluggish desktop when building a virtual disk in VirtualBox OSE on 11.2 M8

I'm not ready to file a bug on this just yet, but I wanted to see if anyone else had run into this. The scenario: 1. Install 11.2 Milestone 8. KDE desktop. Hardware is a 4 GB x86_64 Athlon64 X2 (dual core) 2. Install VirtualBox and start the drivers (/etc/init.d/vboxdrv start) 3. Create a 1 GB virtual machine and allocate a 20 GB fixed-size disk. When the virtual disk creation starts up, the responsiveness of everything else on the desktop suffers. I don't have any hard measurements yet, and I haven't tried this recently with 11.1, but it *seems* like it was a *lot* better on 11.1. So: 1. Has anybody else seen / tried this? 2. If they have, is anyone looking at kernel memory management tuning? 3. How common a scenario is this? I do it all the time, but is it worth modifying the distribution parameters? -- M. M8 - no sound detected

It's a server system, and I don't care much about the sound, so only FYI. The system does have a sound kit with CS4232. I have 7 systems I normally keep in various stages of up-to-date Factory. Since I reported this, I haven't even booted 6 of the 7. I see the gross inconvenience it causes to the multiboot way I do things as a virtual blocker. I will not use or allow to be used the antagonizingly long /dev/disk/* device names in menu.lst or fstab. Ubuntu, Fedora and Mandriva don't force me to suffer this. Remarks from using KDE4 Live CD Milestone 8

Hello, here I have some remarks from using KDE4 Live CD, openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 8. First, I'd like to say I was nicely surprised - it looks very good and seems usable. There was no boot splash screen. It is not big problem, but it could contain it. It is lazy. But it is probably common feature of live CDs... :-) And it is not disastrous. SaX2 is not in YaST and in SaX2 there are missing many items presented in older versions. I'll check if it is in Bugzilla. Tools to install Xen is not what I'd expect on Live CD... Item for search on-line repositories is missing in YaST - it should be included, because most users do not know about it. I think was recently discussed. In YaST installer is on first screen licence in English and under it button license translations, which pops up window with same license and drop down menu with different languages. It is silly. Why not to have this drop down menu included over or under the license directly on the screen, without extra clicks and pop up window? My biggest issue with this Live CD is translation. During the boot I choose Czech language (which is highly translated). Boot screen turned to Czech. KDE was mostly in English (although some random sentences within some applications were in Czech). Firefox was completely in Czech. The most strange was YaST. It is mostly translated. But here it was in English and some sentences were in Czech. SaX2 was in Czech. Sometimes one sentence in dialog window was in Czech and the rest in English. Strange. The bug is that Live installer was only in English (nit in Czech despite chosen language). When I upgraded my system to Milestone 8 using install DVD, the installer was fully translated. How many space would it take to include at leas YaST translations to the CD? Such state is confusing and not very good. But still I must say the CD worked very well. Good job! :-) And also openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 8 works better than openSUSE 11.1... ;-) Have a nice day! installation report

yesterday I installed KDE-LiveCD-MS7 on my Laptop(FSC Amilo Pro 2030) and took notes what I liked (will usually not be seen on bugzilla): new Live-CD->USB http://en.opensuse.org/Live_USB_stick#openSUSE_11.2 partition manager UI allows "which partitions to use for install" - first time I did not have to use expert mode when there was already something on the HDD. function keys for brightness/volume working out-of-the-box even in Live-system default sound scheme suspend-to-* working in installed system === problems (did not check bugzilla for those yet): minor: syslinux suggested 800x600 resolution but internal TFT has 1024x768 KDE-live-system: S2RAM fails to resume (black screen, does not shutdown on power-button) ; works after installation minor: CD-tray was ejected after install from USB keyboard was back at us after install (I set german in syslinux) ; yast2 language helped prepare_preload on ext4 printed messages to console "/var/tmp/kdecache/...data has tail _and_ normal blocks" wontfix: b43 (WLAN) firmware missing -> install_bcm43xx_firmware helps NetworkManager failed to assign ipv4 addr/nameserver for eth0 after cable hotplug (only ipv6 from radvd) NetworkManager-0.7.1_git20090811-1.2.i586: system standstill after ethernet cable disconnect Segmentation fault in yast2 online-update-configuration (Register.ycp) => advanced/register => configure now => +Hardware Profile => Details|Next no automatic updates? has useless link to novell.com? ; re-tested after update to factory. still there. yast2 online repositories links to 11.1 factory seamonkey-2.0b2-1.3 /usr/lib/seamonkey/seamonkey-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/seamonkey/seamonkey-bin: undefined symbol: gdk_x11_window_get_drawable_impl -> zypper install gtk2 helped, so it was a missing dependency. seamonkey -mail can not save this mail to IMAP sent folder for some reason also already had two more system crashes, one of which needed a manual fsck.ext4 run afterwards. No backtrace available since I was in X11 and syslog had not caught it. === on my Phenom X4 + GeForce 9400 GT: Live-CD: LCD screen loosing signal randomly (approx 2/minute) overall there are still plenty of issues to be solved. I will probably retest with a later pre-release and/or test MS7 on my other laptop. You are welcome to confirm and file the above issues in bugzilla.
