Hello guys, on TW, since kernel 5.9.* I see the error: msr: Write to unrecognized MSR 0x17f by mcelog Please report to x86(a)kernel.org I'm not the only one with this kind of error, it happens with different address and different application to other people. [opensuse-support] what mechanism makes the preface to a vtty login prompt exist?

Google can't seem to point me to an answer. I did a fresh install of TW a month ago, 20201111 IIRC. On it the vtty prompts are naked, nothing but the prompt on the top line. /etc/issue.net exists, but /etc/issue does not, even after upgrade to 20201214. What is docker0 interface in firewalld configuration?

Hi, I just started a newly installed Tumbleweed system, which now uses nftables instead of iptables for firewalld. The (new?) default zone for firewalld is public, so all incoming traffic on interfaces goes there if an interface is not connected to a zone. This is now the default; on my other system it is external. This zone "public" allows "services: dhcpv6-client ssh". I will remove ssh from this zone and put a number of source addresses in internal, which allows "services: dhcpv6-client mdns samba-client ssh", so also ssh. This restricts ssh access only to these addresses. I am puzzled about a new zone "docker", which shows up when I use "firewall-cmd --get-active-zones" I get zone "docker" and in it: "target: ACCEPT" and "interfaces: docker0". [Leap 15] HP All-in-One printer setup

My system is Leap 15.2 and KDE Plasma desktop I am trying to setup a Hewlett-Packard Color Laserjet Pro MFP M477fnw all-in-one printer/scanner. Using YaST, the printer is seen and recognised, and the correct driver for this model is found. Everything works as expected. Using the YaST Scanner module, the scanner is not detected. I have tried using Add, which brings up a long list of scanner models, but not mine. Even if I select the HP generic driver for all-in-one devices, it loads the hpaio driver, but says 'No scanner recognized by this driver' in the Scanner configuration window. Using 'Run hp-setup' gets me to the same list of scanners. Actually, pretty nearly all HP scanners use the hpaio driver (it's part of hplip). What is so frustrating is that both printer and scanner were working perfectly a month ago, so something has changed recently. But what? I have tried connecting the M477 device both wirelessly and through a wired connection, but both give the same result. Something makes me think that YaST's scanner detection has broken. I had to take out the video card. I know it was quite old. The computer really didn't like it and showed it in various ways. Anyway, this MOBO has wireless. I have no idea what the wireless contains. Is there some sort of standard? (I don't even have the antennas hooked up, but I have them. And I don't know what would receive the wireless. Or is this a replacement for a wired connection to a router? (I believe in wired connections, thanx!) --doug

Looking further into this myself, it appears that the hdmi port of the mother board or a plug-in video card ought to have audio on it. This does not seem to be the case. Plugging the hdmi line into a TV hdmi input does not seem to produce audio to the TV set. The mobo has separate audio ports for input and output. However, the spec on the MOBO (ASRock H310CM-HDV/M.2) under Audio reads: "7.1CH HD Audio (REaltek ALC887 Audio codec) To configure 7.1 CH HD Audio, it is required to use an HD front panel audio module and enable the multi-channel audio feature through the audio driver." The spec sheet has a bunch of such gobbledigook, some of which says to enable or disable things related to the audio. But not how to do so. At any rate, the HDMI port of the computer, on the MOBO, is very touchy. It would not tolerate an HDMI powered splitter box, that I put in to try and drive the TV set along with the local monitor. (Both on HDMI at the time.) (Everything interacts: I was driving the local monitor with the DVI connector, but it would not tolerate an HDMI cable at the same time.) As a result of the above, I installed an old GeForce GTX 550Ti and am now running the monitor and the remote TV thru the aforementioned powered HDMI splitter and that mostly works, except still no audio on the TV. It also takes a L O N G time for the monitor to come alive at boot, and once it did not--it came up in text screen. I would buy a modern video card, but I have no reason to believe it would work any better, if not at least faster. --doug

I'd like to be able to pipe a received video (a Netflix movie, for example) to a remote TV. However, the video output of the computer has no video riding on it. In order to pipe the corresponding audio to the TV, the choices are to split the audio coming out of the sound channel on the computer and then run coax cables to an audio amplifier by the TV, or to add the audio to the hdmi video stream. (Like on standard cable box outputs.) A gadget that can do this is called an audio inserter, and the cheapest one I've found starts at $50. OTOH, there may be a way to add audio to the video before the signals hit the video card in the computer, in software. Does anyone know if this has been done, and if so, how? I seem to recall an old computer that could produce composite video, altho I don't believe it was on an hdmi output. Any thoughts, folks? --doug

Thunderbird messing up the index, or ISP?

Hi, Please see photo: <https://paste.opensuse.org/98198687> It is the INBOX folder of this account, over IMAP at my ISP. As you can see, the contents of the email do not match at all what is shown in the panel above. If I look up the same email in Alpine, it shows "differently". A different corruption, I have it saved on a file. What I'm going to do, is move the contents of the entire remote folder to a local folder, then back. The other alternative is tell Thunderbird to correct the inxdex. Has happened to me four times recently, since the update to Thunderbird 78.x (Leap 15.1). Received a .jar file from USPS, regarding tracking info. It's not critical, but Google says that you can read it in the terminal with java -jarfile.jar. That didn't work here. doug@linux1:~/Downloads> java -tracking.info.jar Unrecognized option: -tracking.info.jar Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine. Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit. Every once in a while someone lays a jarfile on me, and I've never been able to open one. Any suggestions? Thanx--doug
