Tumbleweed: how to recover from a botched zypper dup

I have an old AthlonXP system that I decomissioned three years ago. It turned out later that just an SATA cable needed replacement. Today I tried to update to the latest Tumbleweed using zypper dup, which initially went well (if slowly), but then it hit the installation of filesystem, complained about missing lua triggers and admonished me that I would need a rescue system. Nothing in /usr/bin works anymore, although the (old) kernel boots until the first time it needs a shell for something. I do have a rescue system on USB from that time (actually a net install for Tumbleweed that I used to install the replacement system with), but it runs into trouble: the available shell prompt does not seem to offer a chroot command nor zypper and clicking past the language prompt will blink caps and scroll lock on the keyboard for about a minute and then reboots (perhaps it tried to mount the botched filesystem?). I'm not even sure a chroot would work since the filesystem isn't set up… Preferrably I could somehow use zypper (or rpm) to use the already downloaded package and target the failed installation (with --root /mnt or something like that). Is there a way to do that? Thunderbird and Firefox refuse to open existing profile after upgrade 15.2->15.3

Hi, Yesterday I upgraded my sister's system from 15.2 to 15.3 After that, both Thunderbird and Firefox refuse to open te existing profiles. Gives the message "You are starting with an old version of <Thunderbird | Frirefox>". Which is an odd messages, because one would expect TB and FF to be newer, not older, after the upgrade... [TW] Different file/folder sort order in GTK and KDE

I am running Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma. I have noticed that KDE apps sort folders above files, which I like, whereas GTK apps sort everything alphanumerically. Sort has weird behaviour

First let me start by saying this oddity does not just apply to openSUSE - I have a different Mint machine that also has the same behaviour. In both a visual file manager and in a terminal, the list of documents does not appear to sort correctly (I assume the graphical version is using sort?). nvidia driver update dependency problem

About a month ago updates appeared in the Nvidia repository (Leap 15.3) for the G04 group of driver files, to go from 390.151-lp.153.21.1 to 390.154-lp.153.16.1. But updating throws a dependency error for kernel-default-devel-5.3.18-57, which is old (probably about mid-March) and is not even in the update repository. I'm planning to do the 15.4 upgrade shortly, and want this cleared up beforehand. Ideas? Who to ask? Thx! --dg Leap 15.3, Plasma

SUSE Tumbleweed KDE I want to know why, every week when I run sudo zupper dup my wallpaper gets changed to the default KDE wallpaper? Is there a way to stop this from happening? Thanks Chris

TLS version information

I'm running Leap 15.4 using KDE and KMail for my email (old habits are hard to break). I received and verified a notice from my ISP that they will be requiring TLS 1.3 (but will accept 1.2) starting September 1. How do I determine what version of TLS is in use on my system, and if it is not an acceptable one, how do I upgrade it? Thank you, Mark -- At a towing company: "We don't charge an arm and a leg. WSL LEAP 15.4 default user + sshd

Hi, all -- 1) How does the WSL app specify the user account as which to run? 2) How can I get sshd running to connect to my new instance? I have just installed LEAP P15.4 under WSL and am having trouble with the running user. If I let yast2 create an account, then opening the app runs a shell as that user. I don't want that UID, though, so I tried changing it, and LEAP started as root. So I wiped it all and started over and skipped user creation and created me manually, and it still runs as root. I don't see where I can tell WSL what user to be when it fires off the LEAP instance. In addition, I don't see how I can turn on sshd to support incoming connections. It wouldn't surprise me if I had to work with services in Windows, but I'd think I also need some magic inside the WSL instance. Has anyone done this? when trying after the latest update (mainly concerning libvirt related software) I tried to shutdown the system I was able to see why my system sometimes requests a hardware reset because it would not shutdown or restart normally. The error is repeated hundreds of times. T1] blockdevice_get_no_open T1] blockdevice autoloading is deprecated and will be removed What could be the reason, it appears to have a problem with a hdd? What to do to get rid of the issue. Thank you in advance.

fresh 15.4, with fde, with swap, then adding ram - new swap size neede?

Support, a rather fresh 15.4, with a single nvme drive, was a fresh clean install of 15.4 on it. the machine had lower ram back then. the yast installer occupied the whole disk, creared FDE, I am not very familiar with all these snapshots and lvme and mapper and such terms though. bottom line is, the machine has gotton more ram by now, double the size. the swap partition is exactly the old ram size, at the end of the disk it seems. the yast partitioner shows: /dev/system is LVM is the full disk size (except for the efi system partition at the very front). this dev/system consists of root still almost the full disk, minus the swap behin it, which is the old ram size. now I wonder if i need to enlarge the swap area and how I would do that? can this root stuff be shrunk again to make space for more swap? the machine is a laptop which might not only run sleep and shutdown but maybe also hibernate. i think this hibernate involves the memory being dumped to swap or am i completely wrong? maybe I am. do i need to worry about the swap size? ty.

can 15.4 make use of notebook touch screens?

Support, i can maybe use some new notebook (x64) which apparently would have a multi touch capable display of some sorts. Does linux on the desktop make use of touch screens as input devices or can use these devices in any way? how is this designed in the system? is this maybe some usb attached input device or possibly there are multiple ways vendors implement this i guess. any use to grab a notebook with a touch screen? or is this useless for the normal linux desktop user? ty for insights.

Support, i can barely manage clean install 15.4 with FDE full disk encryption enabled. So far so good, let yast installer from a fresh leap 15.4 iso usb stick handle all of the setup for FDE. for a server or a remote machine it would be needed to allow this server to un-crypt itself during bootup time. i kind of briefly found about dropear or something for initialy network (ssh) reachability of this early stage of the system and then unlocking the FDE (luks?) and so forth. anyone already doing this feat with leap 15.4 and have any comments or hints about it or other alternatives and similar stuff? e.g. <https://www.cyberciti.biz/security/how-to-unlock-luks-using-dropbear-ssh-ke…> can maybe the suse leap installer or addons modules or future projects allow this feature and config this stuff for layperson? tia and ty.

[TW] firewalld not seeing wireless interface in YaST

On this machine, running Tumbleweed, I have two network interfaces, wired and wireless. # firewall-cmd --list-interfaces enp5s0 wlp2s0 But the YaST Firewall tool only sees enp5s0 (wired). # firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-interface=wlp2s0 Warning: ZONE_ALREADY_SET: 'wlp2s0' already bound to 'public' success There seems to be a discrepancy between the gui and the cli. I would like the reassurance of knowing that both interfaces are protected by the firewall, and would prefer to use the YaST gui for configuration as I'm not yet comfortable with firewall-cmd. Hi, I cant login to bugzilla.opensuse.org anymore (Firefox, no scriptblocker or uBlock): Login screen appears again without further message. Login to wiki.opensuse.org is possible! Is there a problem? status.opensuse.org shows a 'partial outage' for Nürnberg Datacenter. but that was updated last on 22. July.... Cheers axel

TAB, Delete, and Alt + TAB combo do not work in KDE????

When hitting the tab key or trying to invoke ALT + TAB, or hitting the delete key above the arrow keys to delete a email in Evolution, nothing happens. Printing not using requested duplex setting

I am using: Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20220728 KDE Plasma Version: 5.25.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.96.0 Qt Version: 5.15.5 Kernel Version: 5.18.11-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 620 Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Product Name: Inspiron 15-7579 I never had a problem switching between none and duplex printing until recently. Now, whenever I request duplex print mode, it now always prints single sheet mode. The printer is a Brother HL-2270DW. I have upgraded to the latest Brother drivers, created a 'new' printer to use, yet the problem persists. I tried printing under Windows 10, which works perfectly, so it does not look like a H/W problem. I have reconfigured cups and the printer using YAST. It still does not work correctly. I have looked in CUPS configuration files but found nothing I could see to be a problem. To get it to print duplex I have to go to the printer (via IP address and browser) to specifically set duplex mode. Then I have to unset it back afterwards. Alas, I am not fully conversant with printer configuring so I am at the end of what I can try. Can anyone help or has anyone had this problem and got past it? It used to work fine but no longer.
