Yes. But I should not worry about it. My sad old server will not boot off the CD so I had to use YaST. YaST2 is just the graphical version. I don't think that there is any thing you have missed out on. YaST2 ? May installation (run from boot disk as my BIOS does not boot from CD-ROM) just calls itself YaST. Am I inferior? Ha ha, Beebs all done :-) Booted the SuSE box an hour ago as I left the room, just come back to see that it has not booted due to corrupted files - No probs, re-installing. Maybe this is associated with problems I had with KDE. Before anyone asks, I did down the machine before switching off yesterday. I'll keep you informed. Introduction & installation comment

Hi New Linux user - Ian Mason, IT Technician/Network Manager at Corpus Christi High School, Cardiff. I purchased SuSE 6.3 to try and familiarise myself with Linux and to try out the OS on a few standalone machines (curriculum networks still rooted with RM/NT4 for the foreseeable future!). Particularly interested in the workstation security that Linux could provide (translated to mean I'm fed up with Windows installations being destroyed by users and a multitude of games and other undesirable software appearing on our standalone machines!). So far have just installed onto one machine. The only problem I had was YaST2 hanging up at the end of the package installation when I tried to install LILO to the hard disk boot partition. A look at the SuSE website support database revealed that a bug in the installation procedure was causing this - the problem does not exist if you choose to copy LILO to a floppy, then copy it to the hd partition using YaST. Would have been nice to have a note to this effect with the boxed copy of SuSE - it would have saved me running through the installation four time wondering what was going on !! Now I have just got to find some time from somewhere to start playing with the system! Look forward to reading loads more on this list . . . . For those new to Linux: it takes a while to find all the massive amounts of help and documentation which are there. Here are some places to look. The SuSE Linux 6.3 manual: sleep with it under your pillow. http://suse-linux.co.uk There is a support database and a harware database among many other things. `Running Linux' published by O'Reilly (now 3rd edition - don't buy the 2nd which is still in some bookshops). I found this book very useful when I began. The Help system on your system (the fuzzy chameleon button if you use KDE) or type file://localhost/usr/doc/susehilf/index_e.html in your browser. Everything in /usr/doc/ including the howtos and mini-howtos The man command: eg man ls tells you everything you might want to know (and probably don't) about the ls command. The info command. The Linux Documentation Project http://www.linuxdoc.org/ Slashdot http://slashdot.org/ Linux Weekly News http://lwn.net/ Linux Gazette http://www.linuxgazette.com/ If you are stuck with a strange error message or something you can't do and you do a news search on Altavista http://www.av.com/ you are very likely to find an answer in old news group postings. Hi, I'm Pete Spencer, ICT co-ordinator at the Harry Carlton School, Notts. We are at present running WinNT and 95 but we are going to get a new school built under the PFI initiative. The school will be ready in 2002 and will contain 10 networks of 50 machines. Linux is my operating system of choice but I have to justify it to everyone involved in planning the new school. The problem seems mainly to do with compatibility with software used at home by both staff and pupils. Has anyone had to answer similar questions - and what were your answers? Cheers Pete
