DONE IT ! Thanks Roger, I would have got there earlier if I'd have remembered that Linux is case sensitive on its commands. Just installing StarOffice 5.1 now. Half-term (today's welcome message)

Well, I've already been ticked off for suggesting that half-term would be a holiday ... (Sorry Mike) But I hope you've been sleeping with that manual under the pillow as recommended. The list has grown still more, though far more schools have bought a box than have subscribed to the list. Do introduce yourselves, tell us what you're doing and what your thoughts about Linux so far have been. If you're new to Linux there are people on the list including ourselves who have been there and know what might be puzzling you: use the list to get help which is always available. Good luck. Screen Resolution

Well, Ive just installed Suse for the first time. All appears ok except for the fact that the screen resolution is at about 640x480 and all the dialogue boxes are huge. Help! How do I change the screen resolution? Regards Dean Crowe (A very very novice linux user!)

Hi, No news from Tiny I'm afraid! :-) (Much to the wife's horror) I took the LINUX box home and got it working quite quickly with a little peace and quiet. Apart from a bit of messing around to get the graphics adapter to work with the GUI, all went well. After crashing several times and waiting an eternity for things to happen (even my 6 1/2 year old son was making disparaging remarks about the speed!), I robbed his machine of some SIMMs and managed a stately 24Meg. The machine runs at a speed that is just acceptable now, however, a couple of questions. If I load either the gnome or enlightenment GUIs from the graphical logon, Enlightenment loads - what is happening here? With lower memory (16Meg) I was experiencing two main problems. a) occasional glitches on the screen. b) if I clicked the left widget for sliding the desktop, the machine hung. This was most often (if not only) seen on KDE. Are these known problems, or do I not have my Graphics adapter set up correctly. All in all the GUIs are very sexy, but need looking at to get the best out of them. However, the on dit about being able to run LINUX on any old machine is just that. To be of any use - for any purpose - I think that we ought to be looking for (at least) an entry level machine of today. I already hear the cry of command line mode - Hey, I can start a fire with tinder, flint and steel, but give me matches every time. It's an interesting point that one of the most (arguably) stable platforms around - the Apple - has one of the least evolved GUI's, The machines (interface) of today are virtually the same as my first apple, the classic two (one could argue that this is a powerful plus point), albeit faster and in colour. Do anything with them that apple say you can do and they are wonderful (to some people), try to stretch the envelope and they get very upset, this is hopefully where LINUX will triumph, but diversity could also be its stumbling block. Having said that, Windows tries to please all of the people all of the time - How many ways do you know for closing a program down?! Taking my boy to see Toy Story now (since he can't use his computer! :-( ), but when I get back, I will be trying to get the networking working :-) Adrian Kind Regards Adrian Wells P.S. Progress report

I unstalled the SUSE linux about 10 days ago, but have only had a chance to look at it over the last three days. I managed to configure a network card and can use the machine as a web server, accessible from anywhere on the school network. I have installed the netware client and have now managed to access my files from the linux box. I have connected to a netware printer queue using a linux supplied driver ( chosen from the list ) and have printed successfully. Ihave installed applix Officeware ( I await a Star Office CD - a free office suite from Sun, available for Win 9* or Linux). Once Star is installed on Linux and Win 9* I shall have a completely transparent system - pupils will be able to use Linux or Windows with no difference (assuming Star Office stores in a common file format for each platform). The only job left is to find a way for users to access their email - we use mercry and Pegasus, which puts the email directly into their filespace. This shouldn't be too difficult ( I hope). New Syllabi, New OS's

Hi, We are commencing the new specification 'A/As' Levels from this summer - computing rather than IT - and with the more technical bent, I will be partitioning our network to include at least a few Linux workstations for the A-level students to use. Hopefully, I will be able to keep more than one step ahead of the candidates :) I cannot see thw Win' platform continuing to have it all its own way for much longer, and with the breadth of the new specifications, I can only see an appreciation of the Un*x-type os's as an advantage. I can see that I am going to have to spend an awful lot of time, a scarce resource in any busy computer department, trying to get to grips with Linux. I remember the struggle to get into Windows after being a long term DOS (and its predecessors - CP/M, RT-11 etc) user! Good luck to anyone else out there who, like me, is going to brave the unknown.
