Hi, I'm Pete Spencer, ICT co-ordinator at the Harry Carlton School, Notts. We are at present running WinNT and 95 but we are going to get a new school built under the PFI initiative. The school will be ready in 2002 and will contain 10 networks of 50 machines. Linux is my operating system of choice but I have to justify it to everyone involved in planning the new school. The problem seems mainly to do with compatibility with software used at home by both staff and pupils. Has anyone had to answer similar questions - and what were your answers? Cheers Pete

Puzzling numbers. Is that ten classrooms each with 50 machines? Why ten networks? What defines a "network"? Surely there's going to be at least one network terminal per classroom?

Are they *really* rolling in cash? How many technicians are allocated to keep the machiens going? Have they read about the Dome machines?

Yes. We don't want to be compatible wuth home viruses and home games. -- Christopher Dawkins, Felsted School, Dunmow, Essex CM6 3JG 01371-820527 or 07798 636725 cchd@felsted.essex.sch.uk
