Restoring Kmix default volumes

After suspending the notebook the kmix defaults are intermittently not restored and left at zero. I have had to unload the pcmcia & alsasound modules so that they both will work at all after resuming the box. Can someone please tell me what line in what config file may bring this all back to normal after resuming?? T/A -- ...CH SuSE On A Toshi Is All U Need 2 Drive U Crazy. SCSI/Scanner again

Hello list, just a time ago I had trouble with installing the SCSI-scanner HP ScanJet 4c and at last i thought, the SCSI Card is the troublemaker. So i got another SCSI Card (AdvanSys ABP 925) and a cable with SCSI 2 (i think) at one end and a end with a thick fifty pins adapter from a friend as a solution. But SuSE Hardware - List does not show ABP 925 (but it shows ABP 920 and 930). If i check cdrecord -scanbus, the SCSI Card is not there. The scanner and the SCSI Card works fine under Windows 98 SE. The automatical detection of the scanner doesn't work. What did i do wrong? The cable or the card? regards, Christof Schmitt

In a standard 8.2 installation if you look in /etc/pam.d files for xmd and gdm, you'll see they call a pam module called devperm. This module reads a /etc/logindevperm file, that states wich device should have their permissions changed and to what. Moreover, they change the owner of some devices to the logged in user. This is what's changing the devices permissions. What I dom't understand is why this isn't right for you: after all it should give you ownerships of the listed device, so your user should be able to use them. I have problem with this only when/if I log in with a different user in a different X session, but otherwise I'm fine. Oh, since I'me re-sendding this, I can as well add a maybe obvious tip: if you want to give permission for the devices to some groups, you can change the ownership of i.e. /dev/video0 to root:video this way the logging-in user is assigned ownership of the device, but the other users in the video group can still use the device. Then you go editing /etc/logindevperm to change the rights for the video devices from 0600 to 0660 :-) Ciao, Roberto.

multiple sound cards with ALSA/KDE

I had a problem getting the AC97 sound chip on my motherboard to work at all with ALSA and KDE. Eventually I installed a sound card, and then got it to work by turning off the chip on the motherboard with the BIOS before getting YAST to reconfigure the sound cards. You > didn't mention KDE, but I'm betting here... I think you're right Tom: I've observed this kind of problems on two cards setups before. It could be a arts problem or a ALSA one. Thomas: as a first try, you can disable the AC97 audio from BIOS (hoping the BIOS removes it correctly from the PCI resources). If this doesn't work (as in "you continue to see the AC97 audio card), remove the SoundBlaster card. If with only one card it works, but you need 2 cards, we can do other tests: for example, killing off arts and testing the two cards "manually" with native alsa tools and from a console shell. If this works: - maybe changing artsd settings (first one that comes to mind: "sound IO system" to "ALSA" instead of "Auto") or upgrading to a new version of artsd could help. - If the problem is in ALSA itself, we could try using a different kernel. I think I'll try this shorlly, since I have the same kernel error messages on audio you have, and Mr. Mantel released a 2.4.21 test kernel. Also, which version of KDE and kernel are you using? The ones shipped with SuSE or some new version? If this does NOT work: - maybe yast has problems writing the 2-card setup in /etc/modules.conf. I recall something similar, but I don't remember if it was yast or some other setup tool. Try to send me your modules.conf. if this is the case, you can fix the modules.conf manually (but you'll have to never run again yast's audio setup :) Ciao, Roberto

Which audio card are you using? You can try some test: first, if you try to log from a console, how are the things going? It is the same or not? Secondly, are there any errors reported in /var/log/messages during startup? And during audio initialization? And after you delete and reinstall the audio card? Also, what's the output of the command lsmod? Does it show audio modules? Are they the right ones (the ones for your card)? Ciao, Roberto

Continued Problems with Sound

Why do I have to delete the configured sound carads every time I log in to SuSE 8.2 Professional and reconfigure them to get anything to work other than pcm from the general system. As soon as I reconfigure the sound, everything works....until I log out. I have seen other people reporting this, but can't recall a fix at the moment. Why doesn't SuSE fix this? It is a real agravation. And of course, the official response from SuSE is that they do not provide installation support for sound (They did not respond that way when I bought earlier versions of SuSE...they provided excellent assistance.) I could understand that approach if the things being affected were something unusual, but you can't even get the alsamixer to run until you delete and reinstall the sound cards. Does anyone have a solution? (You can't tell I'm frustrated with this can you?) Thomas

You could also try to ask in alt.os.linux.suse but do some searching first, in most linux newsgroups you are considderd to be lazy if you ask an question without showing that you realy have tried to find a solution youreself. Struggling with Audio CD access rights in SuSE 8.2

Hello, There seems to be something wrong in my SuSE 8.2 system-configuration. It is not possible to use KsCD and KMix as a user unless I have given as 'root' the commands : chmod a+r /dev/cdrom chmod a=+rw /dev/mixer After every boot, both /dev/cdrom and /dev/mixer only have rw permission for 'root'. My user administration says that I belong to the following groups : jrm Jan Elders 500 users,disk,uucp,dialout,audio,cdrom,video As far as I have understood, this should do the job, but it doesn't ! What puzzles me even more is that I have to give both commands everytime again after having booted. Shouldn't the chmod remain effective, also after boot ? Moreover, I'm also confused by the fact that reading a data-CD is no problem at all. With my SuSE 7.3 I did not have this phenomenon, so I wonder : 1. did I do something wrong in the installation ? 2. or has something been changed with SuSE 8.2 that I have overlooked ? Real Player problem

Hi all. I'm running SuSE 8.1 pro. There seems to be a problem with Real Player default installation. There is no text being displayed in the application. I just get little square symbols instead of text. Obviously a font problem somewhere. Has anyone else managed to sort this problem, Regards, TIA - keith Roberts
