Automatically play an audio CD (resent b/c/o no solution yet)

Is there any way to simply have some background (console) task AUTOMATICALLY play that cd in background as soon as I put that cd into the drive? How do I do that? (console solutions please!) ======= thanks, also text pointers appreciated. cda is running (started with cda on), now how do I instruct cda to start playing after I have inserted an audio cd? sound but mp3 players hang

SuSE 7.3, kernel upgraded to 2.4.16-4GB SuSE. Sound works, and I can play a CD, and hear the System Notifications (start up sound, open or close window sound, etc.). XMMS hangs when I try to start it. Gqmpg hangs. mp3blaster on a terminal doesn't play, but at least provides a message "Failed to open sound device". Any thoughts of what to look for? Thanks. Gramofile

Hi, I am new to the list as well as being fairly new to Linux and I would appreciate if someone can help me on understanding that: The wav files I generate with gramofile program, out of the line input of the sound card, seems normal in size and, in fact, sounds OK if I play it directly with -say- xmms player. But went I intent to burn a CD with they, I get an error because each track is supposed to last for more than 100 min. (in fact they have about 4 or 5min. each). If I convert the wav files into mp3 format, and then I convert them back to wav format, all goes OK. The GramoFile version is 1.6 (that I got from Ftp SuSE site because, on the contrary that is said in the Applications manual, it is not among the packages suplayed with the distro) and I run SuSE 7.2 in a Duron-800 based PC. CD Player (Kscd) and Suse 8.0

I read Patrick's question of the 11 Jun 2002 22:26:05 with interest as it seemed to describe the problem that I am experiencing. I did exactly as recommended by Dieter in his reply (ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom) and since it worked for Patrick, but not for me I must assume that the problem is different. I can get Kscd to run with an audio disc in the CDRom/CDWriter and the display seems to indicate that the CD is running, viz. the timer is running. It shows volume at 59%. However there is no sound output whatsoever. Yast2 Control centre -audio test result is perfect Hardware info identifies the CD-RW correctly and it is shown as /dev/sr0 under both CDRom and scsi details. CDR-W is Plextor 12/10/32A and works properly with data files and in all respects under windows. I am new to Linux and intend to persevere with it, but I would like to get it up and running first in order to explore it. Can anyone help me please? David Rose

I need a KDE (or even better: CONSOLE) player for the audio RB format, I was able to locate format descriptions on the above pages, but even the programmers do not know of a Rebirth Format player (.RBS file ext) under Linux environment. ("devzone" on the HP above) Now the ?: Is there any of you capable of programming such a thing? Maybe you know one of that kind. Please PM me, I am in contact with Propheads for Linux support anyway. So far I have found similar analogue synth programs for Linux, but none of those I know does support the ingenious .RBS Format. Ok, this is the story: The standard configuration using YAST2 in SuSE7.3 (just after installation) didn't detected the sound card (or chipset in this case) Finally, I used "alsaconf" in text mode, and it was detected as "Intel 82820 820 Camino2 AC97" I used "gamix" in Xwindows to "unmute" the sound. Sound is playing, BUT 1- Everything is "quicker" than it should. Hi mates, has anyone successfully been working with VGA Planets (D0S) WinPlan (Win 9x) Planets 4 (Win 9x) Rebirth 338/Steinberg (Win 9x) Cool Edit 2000 (Win 9x) so far? No audio CD players work in 8.0

Does anyone know a simple reason I should have no luck playing a cd in 8.0 when everthing worked fine on default settings in 7.3. KSCD shows "ejected" on its display. Wont load or eject with the tray widget. Flashes 'Closing" fo an instant then returns to "Ejected" Dosn't matter if tyhe tray is in or out. In Gnome the CD plaer reads "searching" Then says "input output error." I tried cdparanoia to see if it would rip, if it wouldn't play. It won't. Cdparanoias exhaustive drive search function retuns with "drive exists but is not accessible" In Konqueror audiocd:/ gives me a no such website message. Clicking the small CD icon in KDE yeilds Could not mount device. The reported error was: dev/cdrom: Input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified. What baffles me most is that the cdrom works fine fo loading software. Ejects on cue and everything. I tried digging around a little, but I'm no wizzard. I looked at SuSE support database and found an old article about a similar situation.Checking permissions I saw: pat@linux:~> ls -l /dev/cdrom lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jun 1 01:20 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc Seems fine.But no help. As root I looked at Yast hardware details and found the CD-ROM mount point to be "/dev/sr0" So could it be the mount point is wrong by default somehow? It seems unlikely that mine would be the only one... ...and the CD-R works fine...or at least mounts up when I click the icon in KDE. The CD-R icon mounts /dev/cdrecorder to /dev/sr0 and opens /media/cdrecorder. fstab looks like: dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 mtab with the CD-R mounted: /dev/sr0 /media/cdrecorder iso9660 ro,nosuid,nodev,user=pat 0 0 Should I change a link somewhere? Or suffer in silence while sitting next to $70 worth of new CD's?

Here's what I see in my modules.conf file regarding sound: alias sound-slot-1 nvaudio options snd-intel8x0 snd_ac97_clock=0 snd_enable=1 snd_index=0 options snd snd_cards_limit=1 snd_major=116 When I first installed with yast2 it configured the sound card with no problems. However, when I boot my machine it HANGS at the point it says it is initializing the intel8x0 module. I saw some email regarding this and linux and alsa but this was at least a year old posts. ATI TV Wonder PCI, SuSe 8.0 and kwintv

I got kwintv configured properly and it found all the TV stations and sound worked too. The problem is I tried to resize the TV window by dragging one corner and it did resize it. Unfortunately in the process it also hung my machine. After a re-boot, I clicked on the TV card icon to start it and it immeidately hung my pc. Hello! ^_^ I migrated to suse 8 from mandrake 8.2 because i needed software for multitrack recording and so on and i can say i really love this distribution. my problem is with my video card: how can i use a matrox g400 in dual head clone with tv support mode? I downloaded the new drivers and matrox powerdesk from matrox site but: - if i use powerdesk i can enable tv support but there is no management for 3d - if i use the screen configuration for XFree 4 i can enable 3d but not tv support - if i use powerdesk after screen configuration for XFree 4 X blows up screaming about no screen supported or something like that and i have to copy the backup configuration on the XF86Config file does anyone know what to do? I was thinking about cutting and pasting the configuration of tv-out from the XF86Config made by powerdesk on the XF86Config made by the xfree configuration utility but of course if someone knows a better way I'm here to learn ^_^ the second problem is: even if i will be able to use 3d and tv out, what about Macrovision???? i mean, i need the tvout to view my dvds and divxs on tv but the macrovision system lets me see only a black screen. Is there a way to remove this stupid and most of all USELESS protection? or at least to make it work as in window$ (it lets you watch divxs on tv but not record them on vcr)? thanks for the help ^_^

Hallo list, I installed SUSE 7.0 for my Jukebox server. Soundblaster works fine, NFS also. No problems here. Even wavplay runs LONG wavs just fine (tested with a 9 MB long wav file) Now regarding MP3s I got a problem. mp3blaster, which seems to apparently have a larger read-ahead than mpg123, plays the first 10 secs (approx) fine and then plays distorted sounds (just as repeating bits of it). How can I get this done? What I wonder is that how I can play WAV finely but not MP3? I got 20 MB of RAM onboard, this should be enough by far... SuSe 8.0 hangs on sound card init

Folks, I did a fresh install of SuSe 8.0 on a new MicronPC Millenia XP+ machine (AMD). This has the nForce 420 chip set which contains the MCP (media & communication processor) and APU (audio processor unit). After Yast2 installs it tells me the sound card was detected and configured just fine. Next Yast reboots my PC to finish installation and that goes perfectly. However, the next time I do a reboot, my PC hangs at the start sound card step. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks, Babu __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dear all, I really tried hart, but could not find a good solution in Linux to record TV/videos from my BT878 TV Card. The main issue is, which codec and record tool to use. So far my studies had following results: Record Tools: - broadcast 2000 - ffmpeg - dvr (does not compile propperly under suse 7.3: format.h missing - Anybody any hints ?) - mjpeg tools - use lavrec to record. But there is no clear documentation, whether bttv based TV cards are already supported. Codecs: - Divx 4/5 - MPEG 2 - MJPEG Some of my questions are: - Does anybody have found good solution to record directly to MPEG2 or Divx ? If so, which software does the job ? - Has anybody experience with the mjpeg tools, and whether they can be used with bt878 TV Cards? - is there a tool, which can be used to record directly into divx, or is divx kept in a Quicktime wrapper? - Can broadcast 2000 record in divx somehow ? Suse 7.1 & 8.0 Kwintv is working at about half my screen size. When going to full screen the borders expand but not the picture. I am wondering what modules or configuration will give me a full screen picture. I am using the Nvidia glx drivers. Brian Marr

Hi, When I installed SuSe 8.0 it automatically detected and "configured" my TV card. However, when I tried Xawtv it locked up my machine and I had to reboot.
