Is it normal for the CPU to be running @ 100% anytime I run any programs that are 3D based? I've seen this on my system running OpenGL plugins for XMMS and when running TuxKart and Parsec. The programs themselves seem to be running just fine and seem to be using the 3D capabilities of my card. Any comments/insights are appreciated. Thanks. 3Dfx problem on normal user

Hello to everyone, I have a 3Dfx Interactive Voodoo, but I have some problems when I try to run 3D applications (for example gears) as normal user. The installation has set the script_3d variable to switch2mesasoft. I run the script switch2mesa3dfx, but when I try to execute a 3D application( gears) I get a "segmentation fault" as normal user. As root things are better and at least the gears app or the OpenGL spectrum analyser of xmms work fine. (I use XFree86 version 3 to support my Diamond Stealth S3Trio 64 card and the packages mesa3dfx and glide_vg are installed) I read the documentation about mesa3dfx and it says that I have to run any 3D application as root, or set uid on such apps!! How can I fix the 3Dfx to work as normal user? By the way, in the Kcontrol module "Available Hardware" it show a check mark near my S3 card and a "tools" mark near my 3Dfx (and near some other hardware that work fine, that is my monitor, the floppy disk controller etc). What does this "tools" icon mean? That the relevant hardware is not yet configured? Thanks! -- Konstantinos

Help Playing CDROMS with SuSe 8.0

Hello, I have SuSe 8.0 Professional installed. My sound system is working fine. I'm getting sound when I play mpegs or wavs. When I use the YaST configuration tool, I'm able to get sound. However, when I try to play a music cd, all of the players see the tracks and "play" the tracks, but there is no sound. I can use the DVD-CD rom as a data source. My hardware configuration for DVD-CDROM according to YaST is as follows: _NEC DV-5800A Bus: IDE CD type: dvd Class (spec): CD-ROM Class: Mass Storage Device Device: _NEC DV-5800A Device name: /dev/hdc Prog. interface: 3 Rev: 1.0A driver: ide-cdrom My hardware configuration for the CD-RW according to YaST is as follows: LITE-ON LTR-24102M: Bus: SCSI CD type: cdrw Class(spec): CD-ROM Class: Mass Storage Device Device: LITE-ON LTR-24102M Device name: /dev/sr0 Prog. interface: 2 Rev: 4DS3 Vendor: LITE-ON driver: ide-scsi When I change the cd player to use the CD-RW device, it doesn't play either. Try different recording inputs and see if there is a difference. I am using Canon BJC-2000, Epson Stilyplus (color) 880 with SuSE 8. They are working properly with black ink. But they can not printing with color, so they printing always with black color. How can I print with color ink ? Installing CD-RW on suse 8.0

I'm trying to install a new plextor cd burner (Plexwriter 16/10/40A CD-RW) on my SuSE 8.0 system. I've followed the instructions in the support database but haven't had success. The instructions - briefly outlined - are: Switch off IDE support by changing the LILO configuration - add hda=ide-scsi to the append option of the boot loader (hda is the correct drive for my cd) Load the scsi emulation by adding this line: /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to the /etc/init.d/boot.local file. Correct settings for all IDE CD drives: ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrecorder I've also tried: ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrecorder per suggestion from suse support Add this line to fstab: /dev/cdrecord /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 mkdir /media/cdrecorder Reboot and the thing should work but when I run cdrecord -scanbus this is all I get: Cdrecord 1.11a13 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling Linux sg driver version: 3.1.22 Using libscg version 'schily-0.5' scsibus0: 0,0,0 0) * 0,1,0 1) * 0,2,0 2) * 0,3,0 3) * 0,4,0 4) 'iomega ' 'jaz 2GB ' 'E.17' Removable Disk 0,5,0 5) * 0,6,0 6) * 0,7,0 7) * which lists my real scsi drive (just the iomega) that are on my scsi adapter - nothing about the ide cd-rw. Really fast record or playback

I've just recently updated to Suse 8.0 Clean Install alsa-0.9.0_cvs20020320-12. SBLive and RME9652 So far everything I've tried to record, I think, is being recorded faster than being stated (16 bits 44100) or at least it is playing back at an accelerated speed or differnt rate. Not "chipmunk" like but "Hey! Ease up on the coffee" like. Old recording and downloaded waves are played fine so I believe this to be a recording issue. Ever heard/seen the likes before? Any ideas why? Or how to adjust it. Audacity seems to work greater than great (never really had it working prior to this) and I'm really liking it. but when all you want is a quick audio reminder or such arecord is nice. Oh....please help me my friend.....I am in trouble. I've tried to find the package of xine on my SuSE 8 cd. But I could not find it. I've tried with YaST2 to find that but I could not find it. If I use "Xine" or "xine" as the keyword than I only find "xinetd". I am sure that was a wrong package because what I need is "xine" package. I've download the package from sourge homepage and tried to install it and to make it easier I was using kpakcage, but than I didn't succeeded it. The error message that I found was : "exec failed: No such file or directory". Is xine not for SuSE distribution ? I want to use SuSE 8 and KDE 3 not other Linux Distributions and not GNOME. Please tell me what I should do ? Sorry if wrong forum - graetful for a redirect moleskin website doesn't seem to exist anymore New to whole games thing My machine, Suse 8.0, 750MHz Duron, 384Mb pc133, DVD, CD-R/W, 5.1 live, ordinary mouse, no joystick, 32Mb Nvidia Geforce 2 card, Nvidia drivers from website, nothing on USB Racer works fine - about 27-30 fps as does tuxracer, flightgear seems to (no joystick so...) Built - Suse 8.0, 1700XP, 256 Mb DDR, DVD, CD-R/W, 5.1 live, Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 4 64Mb card, nvidia drivers , usb = HP printer, speedtouch ADSL , logitech wingman attack 2 joystick tuxracer and flightgear seem fine Racer starts (about 97-100 fps) and then hangs system - driving soundcard mad need to reset machine Any thoughts or advice? Midi in suse 7.2 pro

When i issue the command 'cat /proc/asound/sndstat' i get sound card listed but against synth and midi it says NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG. Anyone any ideas about what is wrong - do i have to recompile alsa? Or what config does it mean. Rick

Aviplay on SuSE-7.3-PPC

Hello, Did anyone succeed in finding andinstalling Avifile package on SuSE-7.3-PPC (PPC!!!). Package is available in SuSE-7.2 (i386) but not in SuSE-7.3-PPC Reason: I captured a concert from video cartridge with VCR. The .avi file works very well on my notebook with Aviplay on my Dell notebook with SuSE-7.2 (i386) for PC. But at work I only have a fucking G-3 notebook on which I can't install Avifile/Aviplay. I installed Xine but I have no luck with Xine, I never managed to have a correct installation, the image is very bad (a lot of frames are suppressed) and the image often hangs. Frame grabber and software

Hello, I'd like to make some personal edition of Video from Camescope. What kind of Hardware will grab the video, and software to make the final movie. My goal is to get the final movie an edition of video parts from at least two video, and let the sound from only one. May be I'm not so clear ... Any links, or references ?? Regards

Video camera tape to CD

Was thinking about trying to convert some tape (VHS) to CD, or straight from the Cam to CD. Has anyone tried this in Linux, what programs would you recommend for this project? Also how much recording time will typically fit on to a CD. I'm not looking to fit a whole VHS tape on a CD but something like a short video of a home event, or hobby project. I have a Nvidia Geforce3 Ti200 with 128 megs of ram. It has video in type connection so I assume this would be suitable for my input Thanks............... no MIDI from SoundBlaster Live!

Just upgraded to SuSE 8.0 from 7.2. I had the SB Live working great under 7.2, with soundfonts for MIDI and everything. Now under 8.0, KDE's Control Center shows me nothing under Sound/MIDI. MIDI files don't play even after using sfxload. gamix now shows a breathtaking panoply of options, but I still can't get MIDI sound. emu-config and error message!

I have been trying to use some of the features in my SBLive 5.1 card. When I issue the command "/usr/bin/emu-config" it get the following message: SOUND_MIXER_PRIVATE3: Input/output error Does anyone know of a fix or workaround. I would very much like to acces more of the features of my sound card but have had know luck so far. TIA, Curtis
