I installed suse linuix from the FTP server and got it all set up with no problem! But now after I goto run it when the graphical login screen comes the screen gos black and the moniter displays a internal message "out of scan range.: I know this is cause settings of some sort are too hight! Hi What program should I use for playing *.ogg videos? I have searched xine and mplayer sites, and done what I believe to be correct, but it just won't work. I have SuSE 8.0, and all other formats do work.. Jaska.

xine/ogle/mplayer slow dvd video output

I've finally figured out how to get these progs to actually play dvd on my machine but the video part of the dvd playback is excruciatingly slow. I had the same dvd player in a much slower machine under suse7.2 and things were fine but on suse8.1 it's unwatchable. xine refuses to see my dvd if it is set as /dev/hdb, but will play it Sloooooowly if I use /dev sr0. Unfortunately this does not allow me to turn DMA on for the dvd player. Actually for some reason none of my drives are allowed to set dma on any more, even though they were set up that way right after I installed 8.1 I know I've covered a bit of ground, but I'm hoping that something here will ring a bell for someone. Software Midi

I'm trying to get some good software midi program installed since my onboard audio (Via686) hasn't got any support for midi. I have installed Timidity with ALSA support according to the how-to. When I run the Timidity server (I need to run it with -B4,8 instead of 2,8 cause otherwise sound quality is bad, haven't tried any other values yet) eveything works correctly. The problem is that I would like to be able to use midi all the time without having to run the Timidity server each time. Also when I play a midi file, the sound device is used so I can't play wave sounds at the same time for example. Is there any workaround for this? Would it be better to use another program instead of Timidity in my case? Thanks in advance.

[suse-multimedia-e] Audio CD Problems

Hey all, I posted a question a couple of days ago about problems I was having with SuSe 8.1 recognising CD Drives properly.... I'd like to say thanks to all those who posted answers as things are now working much more like they should, but I still have one tiny problem - I can't play Audio CD's. I have the two drives - a DVD (/dev/hdc mapped to /media/cdrom & /media/dvd) and a CD Rewriter (/dev/sr0 mapped to /media/cdrecorder). Mounting DVD's and normal CD's in the DVD drive works fine and burning CD's with the CD rewriter also works fine but I can't get programs like XMMS to play audio CD's inserted in the DVD drive. I do have an audio cable running internally from the DVD drive to my sound card and I have made sure sound isn't muted anywhere... I have also made sure I have the correct permissions to play stuff but alas I cannot get this working!!!!!!! I know you can't mount audio cd's, but how do I get programs like XMMS to play audio CD's???????? Playing location "audiocd:/" doesn't seem to work nor does "/media/cdrom" or "/media/dvd"..... Any suggestions? Gary.

Hi All, I have a problem with a pretty standard default Suse 8.1 installation where by I have one Philips 1200 CD rewriter & a panasonic 106s dvd drive and Suse seems to be reconising them wrong. If I stick a dvd in the dvd drive it gets mounted under /dev/cdrecorder !! I'm also unable to mount/play any audio cd's in either drive although sound works fine. (Yes they both have audio cables connected from them to my sound card) I'm a bit of a Linux newbie so I may just be being totally stupid but I'm a Windows (hiss, boo) IT techie by day and like to think I know a bit when it comes to solving problems but I could do with some help with this PLLLEEEEASSSSEEEEE. >From what I've read/learned the entries in FSTAB have a lot to do with drive allocation so the lines that relate to my drives are as follows: /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 Any help with solving these problems would be gratefully received...... Thanks for all the suggestions you guys are firing my way, the PC in question is my home machine so I won't be able to let you all know if any of these fixes work until I get home from work tonight .... They implemented SCSI emulation on all CD drives but didn't set up the device links corrrectly. Problems mounting a multi session CD.

Hi everyone. I'm having problems getting to the data part of a CD. It happens with a couple of CD's that I own. One of which is Diskworld2, and the other is Filter - the Amalgamut I know there's multimedia content on the drive but when I go to mount it I get a message, Could not mount device. The reported error was: /dev/cdrecorder: Input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified I can play the audio though. My FSTab file has these settings. /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 Any Ideas? Jason

xmms-dropouts

When listening to xmms while reading my mail xmms will dropout during the delete of a message (also while saving a bookmark in konq). I think this may be happening during other disk activity as well but I haven't explored this yet. ( I just spent a few minutes exploring this and it definitely seems to be disk access related ) I tried decreasing xmms nice value (giving it higher priority) to -4 but that didn't help. I'd appreciate ideas as this is very distracting. Suse 8.1 pro, kde 3.05 (although I've noticed the problem on other versions of suse and kde as well). I've got a brand new machine w/ athlon xp2000+, 512 mb memory and 2 seagate barracudaIV 80gb drives so I don't believe that computing puwer is to blame. thanks dh

Dear Marshall, I've tried Gramofile, KRecord and wavrec on my 8.1 sys withh a Creative SB Live! 5+1 to no avail. They all seem t9o think /dev/dsp is busy or non-existant. I have audio coming in to the 'line-in' jack and I hear it on line- out; I can control it with KMix. The recording apps cannot find /dev/dsp. Perhaps one of the more MultiMedia savy types will lend a hand?
