For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. Schools Linux distro

I have been experimenting with a copy of Mandrake that I downloaded from their site a couple of weeks ago. When you install, it gives you a dozen options - network server, network client, games machine, office machine etc etc. I can't say that the server client set-up that I am running on a pair of old K6's is doing that well. I like the potential idea and haven't given up yet. The Sun website is keen to tell us that are releasing Gnome ver 2 and Star Office ver 6 in the Spring. I think Chris's idea is excellent and been toying with the idea of approaching Mandrake about similar myself, anyway. I don't have any experience of Red Hat but they seem to have a good record for corporate support. What are Suse thinking Roger? Not being too negative though, I think, we will probably look to be installing XP because of the number of existing Windows based licences that we have and the resident level of staff training that we possess throughout. I include in this, all the staff nervously working through their NOF courses on their new machines that their spent hard earnt cash upon as well as our gap filling KS3 part timers. Additionally, There are quite a few killer apps that I don't think we could live without and quite a few departments have invested large amounts of budget into resource CD's and windows based curriculum support software. We have been using XP on standalones for a while now. It represents a big move forward and so far is a very solid platform. I have reservations too, about Sun Microsystems making a monoploly of my network and taking over where Microsoft left off either. I wouldn't want to invest curriculum development and good time into possibly buggy and soley office based moves forwards either. Now, start to resist the urge to flame me at this point, please. I am on your side, really. I would love for Linux to succeed at a school level but I don't mind paying Bill Gates if it makes my life easier. If I sweat and work against the flow, upset staff and departments, all I will get for showing the LEA and the Head that we can survive on less money is a budget reduction. Not much incentive really, is it. Pay a fair day's wage for a fair day's work and we might find some people prepared to get Linux moving. Chris, you have already said that you are not going to work full time on this. Is anyone? Will a slick system arrive in time for me not to install XP. I have my doubts. If I can help in a small way, though, I am happy to help you.

Therefore, I would like to create a Linux distribution which works in a similair manner to RM connect. What do people think of these proposals? I can't guaranteee that it's going to happen or quickly (I'm busy with school and developing KDE), but if some people want to help as well, then it just might :) Linux distribution plan - ------------------------ Target audience: Schools, colleges, universities Aim: To provide a simple to install and administer networking system, which works in a mildly similair manner to RM Connect. Except it actually works (and has decent security), and is based on free software (GNU/Linux). By simply booting a machine with a boot floppy, it should be easy to install Linux on to the macine, after just asking a few questions such as the hostname to use, and the kind of mouse that the box has. Implementation: A Linux distribution based on Red Hat 7.2 would be created. The main reason that Red Hat is suggested is because it can be installed based around the Kickstart installation system, which enables an administrator to stored the installer settings in a configuration file, rather than needing to sit in front of the computer and tend to the the installation every time a question is asked. The distribution will: * Be mainly based on KDE, but provide Blackbox for older hardware (486s and slow Pentiums). There is a possibility that GNOME could be provided as well, but I prefer KDE, and know very little about how GNOME works. Stuff like Kylix and Open Office will also be provided. On the server side, CUPS would be used for the printing system and all machines will have ext3 formatted hard discs. * Have a central administration databases where: - User names and groups are managed - Print and disc quotas are managed - Software can be allocated to a machine/group of machines - The central configuration files are located * On booting up a machine, a system service will check with the server hosting the administrative database whether any software has been allocated/deallocated. If so, it will be downloaded via apache and installed locally, or removed, as appropriate. However, some larger software such as Open Office might want to live permanently on the server. If any configuration files (e.g. /etc/host or similair) have been modified, the updated versions would be downloaded. Perhaps CVS could be used here. * A database such as NIS would probably be used for the administrative database * Upon loggin in (via kdm) the system would map the user's home directory on the server to the /home/user directory on the user name. NFS or SMB are possibilities here. * There will be some user based administrative tools. This will allow the user to change his/her password via a web browser. There will also be an information page showing stuff like information about disc/print quotas. It will also be possible to define the desktop menus (e.g. KMenu) that will appear on the user's desktop. This will be based around .desktop files, and a utility will convert these files to Blackbox menus so that the menu is kept consistent between different desktops. A web based e-mail system could be used to integrate with the IMAP mail server. * The server side would consist of the following pieces of software: - Samba - Apache - Squid - IMAP e-mail server * It will be possible to customise the desktop to default levels. For instance, by most KDE configuration files will be held in a globally readable directory (perhaps in /usr or /etc). Incidentally, you do not *have* to put them in netlogon. You can make a new share, whose name *can* end in a $, leaving the share effectively hidden. You then need to update the registry on the work stations to do a *manual* download of the policy (look in the default machine settings via policy editor, after electing to view the registry). Ensure this holds the UNC path to the config.pol file (including the file name), e.g. \\server\hidden$\config.pol. Leave error checking on until you have got it working. If you need more info, I can probably go more into chapter and verse. Group Policies

>From the info I've got it appears that group policies dont work under samba as samba doesnt tell the windows clients which is the primary group for a user. I've found a way round it using a separate netlogon folder for each group and then having a separate config.pol - however, i occasionally need to add certain computer records to the policies, and if i had to do this i would have to go through every config.pol which will take a while, and also, bearing in mind i am likely to have about 100 groups! Change them to "Domain Users" instead of "Everyone" and this will resolve the problem - since your server will then require an authenticated account for access to those shares. It won't however solve the issue of poor security due to badly configured permissions in the first place. The only way to fix this is the hard way - which you will still have to do if you use samba or upgrade to Win2K. Personally I'd save some money and a lot of hassle and fix the problem that you have, which isn't really that hard. Chris L

migrating from nt4 to linux

I help my old school out with their computers and i currently have a Win NT4 server with Win95 clients. I also have one Red Hat Linux 7.1 Server running Squid, DNS and NAT for the internet. I want to turn the Win NT4 server into another Linux server hopefully running a Red Hat or a Suse version. The system has to be able to cope with logins from Win 95 clients, deal with the profiles we currently use (a config.pol file in netlogon) and provide tight file security (something we currently do not have with NT4!). From my experiments with Samba I believe it can do this but is there anything important I should know. The network admin there is looking at Win2k but I want to provide him with reasons to go for linux. Also, as a side-point - is it possible to tie network cards together to provide greater bandwidth by doing load balancing or similar? Thanks in advance, Alex Brett alex.brett(a)brettcomputers.co.uk

Group Policies in SAMBA

I too have never gotten group policies to work under SAMBA. This is *probably* due to lack of knowledge on my part, but I too noticed lots of people with the same problem. I'm going to have another look at this and then see if there are any updates etc., but if anyone knows how to fix/do this I'd appreciate it also. Paul

Migrating From NT4 to Linux...

Yes. To all. And then some :-) As someone has said, place all of your config.pol into a Netlogon share, making SAMBA the domain logon server. You will need SAMBA 2.2.x but that shouldn't be a problem. As far as channel bonding goes, I looked into this some time ago and in theory it is possible but personally I never got to a solid conclusion about it. Remember, load balancing and channel bonding are two separate things, so make sure you are implementing the correct method! SAMBA/Linux as a server will exceed your expectations and security needs without a shadow of a doubt. You will have more granular security over files and file permissions, and looking through a book such as "Using SAMBA" by OReilley will help you with the subtle SAMBA configuration options that will secure your server from installation and early configuration (something you'll need being in a school I suspect). Good luck--let us all know how the decision goes and how the implementation goes!!! Paul

You (don't) got Mail

Usually things seem to just work, or they don't. I could do with a hand here... I may have this all wrong - I've read the mail administrators howto, and the users howto and I'm a little stuck with an intermitant fault... I've set no mail options anywhere on my system. I have a cable modem with NTL. I'm trying to automate a mail message that, for example, mails me a directory listing from the current working directory. I type: ls -l | mail johnsonmlw(a)yahoo.com I was surprised to see it work at all. I was expecting to have to set some settings. BUT it only works about 1 in 10 times. Odd. If I type it ten times in quick succession, I only get about one into my johnsonmlw(a)yahoo.com mail box, and I receive nine returns from mx1.mail.yahoo.com reporting a "501" error - data format error. I'm a complete mail novice - I've always used my yahoo account. Any suggestions as to why it only sometimes works, and whether I should be typing something else? Dear Hall We are a 200 strong(or weak) pupil primary school that's run a linux server for the past 4 years- which has never gone wrong (LEA told us it wouldn't work, after we installed they came down saw it, said it was great and then still told other schools won't work) We use very little of the SIMS package because its useless and the pupil data base we use is crap - its a great system - they give out updates (about 3 to 4 a year) that inveriably(or do I mean always) go wrong then over 300 school secretaries or adminstrators phone up and try to sort it out (superb way of employing people) I used to complain that the database, budget etc stuff was old fashioned - but at least in the old days the old systems worked - people like stuff if it works and saves them a job or gain some extra benefit - which SIMS etc doesnt Can we get something else? We have about 15 computers that will eventuallly (shortly) be Linux - although I have to keep Windows on for some learning software and games (yep A of E and we have playstations and gameboys - part of the curriculum old boy - games r good for kids - anybody that doesn't think so needs to play (work with) the games - comments/arguments welcome ho! ho!) recently set up Linux with three thin clients LTSP - guess what -Linux KDE desktop has worked out EASIER than windows for staff and children - more options and more user friendly stuff. It seems to be working great so far Can anybody give me some sites with good Linux software for education - I can't seem to find any - even off a CD if anybody knows of stuff. CCM Facility

We are looking to deploy CCM's Facility timetable / scheduler next September which uses M$ SQL 7 as standard. Does any one out there use this software with a Linux DB, DB2 and Oracle are the most obvious. They didn't realise the limitations of MySQL to begin with, eg deficiencies in stored procedures. They should have looked at ProstgreSQL... A beautiful and carefully constructed _mix_, taken from a variety of computing eras. Friendly and 'improving' Herts ICT support send me between five and seven network wide updates a _year_ that keep me busy through my spare time. I don't know what I would do with my time without it. It really is outrageously bad crap. Bloody stuff makes my life a whole heap harder. The end user is forced to endure system beeps from old DOS modules! And, as for consistency of user interface through similar tasks - what consistency. BUT, it is _so_ pushed by the LEA, it would be a _very_ brave move to come away. I'm not sure I'd have the expertise or the bottle to try. At least when SIMS falls over, the LEA can't hassle me for the PLASC data - because all the other schools are in the same "it don't work" situation. There's some safety in numbers - and the buck would otherwise stop firmly at my feet. BTW - the last SIMS upgrade screwed us quite badly. It broke our network for a couple of hours as I reinstalled a .dll that it corrupted that was needed for our internet connection. Prior to the upgrade, Herts helpdesk actually said " Oh you may want to come in at a weeekend for this one - some schools have had real trouble with it." I fell over laughing. Try Borland Interbase OE - much higher performance than MS SQL Server, with the assurance of a big brand name and option of paying for support. Also SuSE do a database solution... Grabbing files , http only

Hi all, I want to write a simple script to go to a certain website and download a file on a daily basis. The site might be www.someplace.com and the file may be getme.txt Would I use Lynx in there somehow? I planned to use FTP to an FTP server, using automated (.netrc) FTP in cron, but our firewall (and proxy) at the ISP (NTL) isn't up for that. It worked from home :( So, I want to use http to save www.someplace.com/getme.txt to /root/getme.txt on our local machine. If it is using Lynx to do it, how do I set this up to use the NTL proxy?
