RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] CCM Facility
Or possibly even copy a bodge from something else and move to expontial bodging.
If you want to know about Bodging, look at Capita's Mentor and SIMS appications. They are the creme de la creme of bodgers. However they are rewriting their software (which was largely Foxbase, but many separate apps with some very nasty glue) in SQL... but I think they too will end up being MS-specific. -- ******************************************************************************** All mail sent and received may be examined to prevent transmission of inappropriate attachments and certain obscenities. I read as far as "Capita" and decided the rest of the sentance was redundant :)

The gluing appeared to get a lot nastier when they brought out Windows based modules.
MS-specific.
What they arn't MS-specific now, we could have saved quite a bit of money by not buying a NT server machine to handle the SIMS stuff. -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763

Surely you're not refering to the SIMS software suite that I have to deal with on a daily basis. A beautiful and carefully constructed _mix_, taken from a variety of computing eras. Friendly and 'improving' Herts ICT support send me between five and seven network wide updates a _year_ that keep me busy through my spare time. I don't know what I would do with my time without it. It really is outrageously bad crap. Bloody stuff makes my life a whole heap harder. The end user is forced to endure system beeps from old DOS modules! And, as for consistency of user interface through similar tasks - what consistency. BUT, it is _so_ pushed by the LEA, it would be a _very_ brave move to come away. I'm not sure I'd have the expertise or the bottle to try. At least when SIMS falls over, the LEA can't hassle me for the PLASC data - because all the other schools are in the same "it don't work" situation. There's some safety in numbers - and the buck would otherwise stop firmly at my feet. BTW - the last SIMS upgrade screwed us quite badly. It broke our network for a couple of hours as I reinstalled a .dll that it corrupted that was needed for our internet connection. Prior to the upgrade, Herts helpdesk actually said " Oh you may want to come in at a weeekend for this one - some schools have had real trouble with it." I fell over laughing. Then politely thanked them for their advice. -- Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Auctions! http://auctions.yahoo.com

Unless they were also there over the weekend what good would it do you :) -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
Sims are going to be M$ specific, originally thier data sheets and specs suggested they would be using MySQL, however, I think they were leaned on(?) Alan "Grainge, Derek" wrote:

IIRC Microsoft has interests in Capita. Interesting that our LEA wants to know if staff members have interests in suppliers. But dosn't appear to be interested if suppliers might have inter-related interests. -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
