Really Weird

I used a machine set up with linux yesterday. Today I can't log in. As soon as I type root as a login name it tells me "login correct" Does this mean I have to re-install all over again? Looking for some serious help.

Hi all, Okay I have been reading this list for a couple of weeks with increasing interest. Now I have a rough plan of what I want to do with my Linux set up, and I need some guidance from all of you that seeem to be so much more advanced than me. At the moment we have a Linux server running Suse 6.1 which acts as our proxy server controlling internet access. We also have a NT network running which is our main network. Now what i want is to set up some machines that run directly from the Linux server, that run the kde desktop and are able to surf the internet. That is all they have to do, I don't want them to access the main network or run any other applications, just be able to surf the net and possibly safe files to disk. Now what i need to know is how hard this will be and what sort of hardware I need. I have a cupboard full of old 486's in various states of disrepair and was hoping to be able to put these to some use. I am particularly keen to use them as diskless terminals if possible. So now what i need is a very friendly soul or souls who would be willing to help talk me through all this, in exchange for infinite thanks and any help with web design, visual basic, javascript or any of the other things i do know about. Hi Des, We managed to get Netscape talking to our proxy in under 10 minutes start to dialup. That's the easy bit - just set up the 'proxy' options in netscape (you'll need to know the IP address and port settings for your proxy). Enter the proxy IP address and *appropriate* port addresses in the boxes and apply the changes. Saving files, in other than the default mode (local disk), requires a bit more effort. We are still working on getting our users access to our NT server (for their home directories) safely, but surfing seems to happen quite easily. Like you, we have several 486's - and are working toward thin-client design for these. I will post when we have any movement on this. I had this the other day - try re-seating the keyboard connector, you might be getting a "double return" on the keyboard. Other hardware problems to check for are sticky keys (try the numeric keypad for <enter>) or muck between/under the keycaps. As a last resort, try another keyboard. My kbd had gone faulty, so it does still happen. (And this ...) --------------------- Got the system working over 1/2-term. Tried a replacement video card (known working, same type, unbranded Cirrus CL-GD5446 1 or 2 MB) - no change. Ended up enabling the on-board video and re-installing both SuSE and RedHat (seperate drives for these) - horrible glitching with shared memory (a known problem with on-board video), but ran OK with SuSE (not RedHat). Video is SIS chipset, 2MB shared. Plugged in the original card (without disabling on-board, this happens automatically) - et voila! Perfect video most of the time - only the occasional transient trashing of a window. I assume that the card is not actually compliant with the standard for these chipsets, and providing one doesn't push for extreme performance, the SIS commandset is sufficiently compatible to work. (I've taken the liberty of forwarding this to the list as I think it was meant to go there - Roger) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I must admit to having not been in all week - good weather means annual holiday! ;) While the Devonshire sunshine dribbled down the windows, I managed to reload SuSE, RedHat and rebuild my Linux box - including a few mods of my own devising (mostly carried out with an axe!!!) The odd problems I was having with video displays are fixed (separate posting), and I've had a chance to squint at the manual a bit. I've also had a chance to plot the next stage of the installation at school <evil chuckle>. Now, back to the grindstone.... It's good if you post to the list, then other people will see what's happening. Get out of X and (as root) start yast. Go to system configuration -> Integrate hardware into system -> Mouse configuration Tell it what kind of mouse you've really got. You may need to run sax (the graphics setup program) and tell it too. No half term for me this week

Our half term was last week, when there were no queues of schoolkids. It was great. I came back on Monday to find that Nominet had (accidently!!) deleted our domain name - they're unhappy because we have no county in it. As a result there was no email inwards and no access to our website. Just what i need on my first day back. It's now resolved, thank goodness, though hardly an apology from Nominet!! As a result there has been little time for looking at Linux. My aim, having got one machine ( a pentium 200MH) working with KDE, Apache server, printing to a novell network printer and workin as a client to Novell giving access to my space on the file server, is now to utilise the several 386s and 486s with 4 or 8 Mb, that I have as x terminals ( is that the right word). I want to have a fast machine as an X server and the slower machine doing some basic stuff via it like bweb browsing, email and basic word processing. I've tried to put Suse on a 8Mb 486 and it just doesn't work. During the install it says too little memory and invites me to start up a second shell by using F2 and creating and activating some swap space to use for installation. I can't find any help on how to do this. As I have similar machines it would be really good to know. Any ideas? Screen Resolution

Well, Ive just installed Suse for the first time. All appears ok except for the fact that the screen resolution is at about 640x480 and all the dialogue boxes are huge. Help! How do I change the screen resolution? Regards Dean Crowe (A very very novice linux user!)

Hi, No news from Tiny I'm afraid! :-) (Much to the wife's horror) I took the LINUX box home and got it working quite quickly with a little peace and quiet. Apart from a bit of messing around to get the graphics adapter to work with the GUI, all went well. After crashing several times and waiting an eternity for things to happen (even my 6 1/2 year old son was making disparaging remarks about the speed!), I robbed his machine of some SIMMs and managed a stately 24Meg. The machine runs at a speed that is just acceptable now, however, a couple of questions. If I load either the gnome or enlightenment GUIs from the graphical logon, Enlightenment loads - what is happening here? With lower memory (16Meg) I was experiencing two main problems. a) occasional glitches on the screen. b) if I clicked the left widget for sliding the desktop, the machine hung. This was most often (if not only) seen on KDE. Are these known problems, or do I not have my Graphics adapter set up correctly. All in all the GUIs are very sexy, but need looking at to get the best out of them. However, the on dit about being able to run LINUX on any old machine is just that. To be of any use - for any purpose - I think that we ought to be looking for (at least) an entry level machine of today. I already hear the cry of command line mode - Hey, I can start a fire with tinder, flint and steel, but give me matches every time. It's an interesting point that one of the most (arguably) stable platforms around - the Apple - has one of the least evolved GUI's, The machines (interface) of today are virtually the same as my first apple, the classic two (one could argue that this is a powerful plus point), albeit faster and in colour. Do anything with them that apple say you can do and they are wonderful (to some people), try to stretch the envelope and they get very upset, this is hopefully where LINUX will triumph, but diversity could also be its stumbling block. Having said that, Windows tries to please all of the people all of the time - How many ways do you know for closing a program down?! Taking my boy to see Toy Story now (since he can't use his computer! :-( ), but when I get back, I will be trying to get the networking working :-) Adrian Kind Regards Adrian Wells P.S. Progress report

I unstalled the SUSE linux about 10 days ago, but have only had a chance to look at it over the last three days. I managed to configure a network card and can use the machine as a web server, accessible from anywhere on the school network. I have installed the netware client and have now managed to access my files from the linux box. I have connected to a netware printer queue using a linux supplied driver ( chosen from the list ) and have printed successfully. Ihave installed applix Officeware ( I await a Star Office CD - a free office suite from Sun, available for Win 9* or Linux). Once Star is installed on Linux and Win 9* I shall have a completely transparent system - pupils will be able to use Linux or Windows with no difference (assuming Star Office stores in a common file format for each platform). The only job left is to find a way for users to access their email - we use mercry and Pegasus, which puts the email directly into their filespace. This shouldn't be too difficult ( I hope). New Syllabi, New OS's

Hi, We are commencing the new specification 'A/As' Levels from this summer - computing rather than IT - and with the more technical bent, I will be partitioning our network to include at least a few Linux workstations for the A-level students to use. Hopefully, I will be able to keep more than one step ahead of the candidates :) I cannot see thw Win' platform continuing to have it all its own way for much longer, and with the breadth of the new specifications, I can only see an appreciation of the Un*x-type os's as an advantage. I can see that I am going to have to spend an awful lot of time, a scarce resource in any busy computer department, trying to get to grips with Linux. I remember the struggle to get into Windows after being a long term DOS (and its predecessors - CP/M, RT-11 etc) user! Good luck to anyone else out there who, like me, is going to brave the unknown. I've spent a week or so messing around with Linux and I have reached the following conclusions. 1. Desktop looks good has some nice functions. 2. It's more resource hungry than windows (not less as the hype clams) 3. A step backwards when it comes to application and service install and setup. 4. Poorly documented. 5. Seems to offer nothing over windows expect the price tag, (which isn't much if you already have a network) and commercial companies will still have to charge for applications. To conclude I think my time would be better spent developing my NT skills at present and waiting until linux advances into a more user friendly operating system. Kuldip Singh.

I think Roger is right. I have had SuSE running for 2 weeks now, and I am only just starting to learn. Your comment on documentation is not true. There is tones of the stuff, but a lot of it is on an advanced level. Also how long did it take you to learn how to run W95/NT. For me I am still learning. Odd Window Panes (Pains?)

Hi, Have just spent the last week (off and on) installing SuSE onto my Linux Box (twice). X-server ran well, first time (a novelty after RedHat ;), but KDE is painfully slow. Restarted using Gnome (smaller and faster), but still slow. Tried AfterStep, better speed but less fun to use (hhos). There is a common problem with all three - when dragging windows or scrolling the contents, various parts of the desktop (icons, taskbar or whatever) are displayed inside the window - repeated and often in diagonal stripes (as if the horizontal hol has unlocked)- which remain static, covering the window contents which are still present and clickable. resizing the window clears the garbage. I've cut down the number of services running to no avail. Any ideas? System Cyrix 6x86MX, 48MB RAM, Generic Cirrus CL-GD5446 +2MB. Everything else standard. Hi all I'm Frank Stewart "ITC-Coordinator?" (The person who was least unknowledgeable got the job)at Sundorne School in Shrewsbury. I've just got Suse 6.3 to try it as a possible to switch to instead of NT 4 and W95. I'm about to install it on a P100 24MB 1.2GB with, sadly, a non-bootable CD-ROM. First impression is that the installation isn't going top be as easy as a windows one. Any advice before I go ahead, apart from what they all need, more memory, bigger hard drive, faster processor. What I want for workstations is a windowy interface with office apps running at least as fast and more stably and securely than they do in windows on the same spec machine. The price war is already won. We have a very small network 20 stations on an NT fileserver with a router giving 64K internet access on the BT scheme to Edex. No email there yet due to problems with Nominet. Regards Frank I have noticed your actions and will consider them. This may take some time.... ;-)

Hi Roger, No similarities between you and the Mullah Nasruddin I hope! :-) Sorry to take to long before coming out to play again. You were right, It was a disk size problem. My 1Gig is split 8M Boot, 64M Swap and the rest native LINUX. I have to agree with Kuldip Singh a 1gGig drive ought to be big enough for most OS especially one that hypes itself as being fast and compact. Even running YaST (1) (which looks like an old DOS program) it is dreadfully slow running a on a P75 and 16meg of EDO (agreed more RAM would probably help) I am about to par down my installation and have another go. Hi, Just a note to introduce ourselves to the list. I'm the Network Manager of The Hundred of Hoo School in Kent. We have just purchased our first Linux Product (SUSE Linux 6.3) but haven't yet had a chance to install it. We will primarily be using it to familiarise ourselves with this O/S with a view to demonstrating it to our IT students. We currently have a large 5 server NT Network running RM Connect 2.31 with over 250 stations. We have 128K ISDN link on the BT Schools Internet Caller Tarrif and over 2000 users all with email and filtered internet access. We will shortly be introducing a Gigabit Ethernet backbone to our network, (if all goes well). We already subscribe to the RM list server which has proved extremely useful and hope that this list will be just as useful. Applications in Linux

Hello I have managed to get my 486 running with a KDE. I sympathise with John McCabe; where do you find these thousands of applications AND do they have installation programs? Hi I am trying to set up samba. I have setup the smb.conf file as best I can and can ping the Linux box from my win95 machine, however I can not log on from my win95 client. How do I setup my win95 client to connect to Linux ?. How do I setup shares on Linux ?. Is there any help documentation available which outlines step by step ( for a newbee) the process of connecting win95 clients. Hi everyone: I am hoping to use Linux as a file and print server but it is all quite experimental at the moment. I have managed to suss (is it SuSE?) out the Internet settings to use the schools existing NT proxy server to do some surfing and I now have to dig in to samba to allow users to access the printer. I am not the school's technician but one of the IT teachers and as such I am in no man's land as far as access to the administration materials. My room is the opposite side of the school and I currently have a windows 98 machine with an HP LaserJet 5 hooked up to it that all of the other 15 windows 95 machines use. Win 98 is no file and print server so I am constantly plagued by complaints that it will not print. If the 95 machine goes into suspend, it dumps the printer off-line for that station and the student has to re-boot the machine a number of times before it re-connects to my computer to print. Usually they play Morse code with the print icon. Sometimes I come in with a new class full of kids, they all log an and see a message to print and I get about 5 dillion pages of wasted printouts before I can get them to cancel. As you can imagine, most annoying and time consuming. I am hoping that a Linux installation acting as a proper file server will enable me to control the queue and stop all the wastage? If anyone has this sort of set-up working I would appreciate the feedback. I am glad that Linux is making a breakthrough into schools and I think that my school (Westwood St. Thomas in Salisbury) will embark on this road quite strongly. We have currently 130+ stations in the school and the prospect of more on the way. With the inevitable (?) backward step of upgrading Microexploit products, we are looking at £10,000 in licenses alone. A suite of networked Linux machines running StarOffice is a much more attractive proposition. If I can get my microcosm to work I think I can better sell the idea to SMT. Install Error

Hi Roger, Having tried installation 3 times now, I have received the following messages. It would also appear that this occurred on the first installation, but my assistant kindly continued the process without telling me! Is it possible that I have a defective CD-ROM? I believe that the HDD & RAM are okay as I am using a previously functioning win95 workstation, that did not do anything too bizarre in the past! :-) The KDE runs, but as mentioned I get errors when trying to run the GUI I want to use the SuSE version, but in the meantime I am installing a copy of Mandrake (that I bought for my home system but never got around to opening the box). The installation "appears" more flexible than SuSE, but you get far less for your money (in fact it cost abut £27+VAT for three disks) and is "apparently" slower to install (don't forget that I am using YaST1 for my SuSE installation) While that cooks, I'm off to read my Valentines cards and restraining orders. Server secure setup?

Evening All No I am not a policeman but one point of security you may like. If you want a secure server for nfs mounting for Acorn RiscPCs or (perhaps) samba services then set the users shell to /bin/false instead of a shell (/bin/bash). Any time they try to log in they get loged out. I secured the BSD server we use at school, for the Acorns, to stop hacking and it works so well. Yes. But I should not worry about it. My sad old server will not boot off the CD so I had to use YaST. YaST2 is just the graphical version. I don't think that there is any thing you have missed out on. Ha ha, Beebs all done :-) Booted the SuSE box an hour ago as I left the room, just come back to see that it has not booted due to corrupted files - No probs, re-installing. Maybe this is associated with problems I had with KDE. Before anyone asks, I did down the machine before switching off yesterday. I'll keep you informed. Introduction & installation comment

Hi New Linux user - Ian Mason, IT Technician/Network Manager at Corpus Christi High School, Cardiff. I purchased SuSE 6.3 to try and familiarise myself with Linux and to try out the OS on a few standalone machines (curriculum networks still rooted with RM/NT4 for the foreseeable future!). Particularly interested in the workstation security that Linux could provide (translated to mean I'm fed up with Windows installations being destroyed by users and a multitude of games and other undesirable software appearing on our standalone machines!). So far have just installed onto one machine. The only problem I had was YaST2 hanging up at the end of the package installation when I tried to install LILO to the hard disk boot partition. A look at the SuSE website support database revealed that a bug in the installation procedure was causing this - the problem does not exist if you choose to copy LILO to a floppy, then copy it to the hd partition using YaST. Would have been nice to have a note to this effect with the boxed copy of SuSE - it would have saved me running through the installation four time wondering what was going on !! Now I have just got to find some time from somewhere to start playing with the system! Look forward to reading loads more on this list . . . . For those new to Linux: it takes a while to find all the massive amounts of help and documentation which are there. Here are some places to look. The SuSE Linux 6.3 manual: sleep with it under your pillow. http://suse-linux.co.uk There is a support database and a harware database among many other things. `Running Linux' published by O'Reilly (now 3rd edition - don't buy the 2nd which is still in some bookshops). I found this book very useful when I began. The Help system on your system (the fuzzy chameleon button if you use KDE) or type file://localhost/usr/doc/susehilf/index_e.html in your browser. Everything in /usr/doc/ including the howtos and mini-howtos The man command: eg man ls tells you everything you might want to know (and probably don't) about the ls command. The info command. The Linux Documentation Project http://www.linuxdoc.org/ Slashdot http://slashdot.org/ Linux Weekly News http://lwn.net/ Linux Gazette http://www.linuxgazette.com/ If you are stuck with a strange error message or something you can't do and you do a news search on Altavista http://www.av.com/ you are very likely to find an answer in old news group postings. Hi, I'm Pete Spencer, ICT co-ordinator at the Harry Carlton School, Notts. We are at present running WinNT and 95 but we are going to get a new school built under the PFI initiative. The school will be ready in 2002 and will contain 10 networks of 50 machines. Linux is my operating system of choice but I have to justify it to everyone involved in planning the new school. The problem seems mainly to do with compatibility with software used at home by both staff and pupils. Has anyone had to answer similar questions - and what were your answers? Cheers Pete

Indeed interesting - We'll be expecting lots of help from you then! :-) The main problem for schools is (paradoxically) lack of money, they are willing to throw money at expensive systems that are easy to understand -If you've seen Win3.xx then you can play with confidence with 95, 98 & NT and have a good idea of what it's all about. What they won't do is spend money on someone who is able to configure/maintain systems that are alien to them (they all have windows at home). Those also on the RM list server may have already seen an intellectual difference in the content (mine aside), What is this telling us? To my mind they are paying peanuts to maintain expensive equipment. And it's very much a case of monkey see monkey do in schools! However, I can't get it to boot from the hard drive, which is now wholly dedicated to Linux. I get a message teling me I'm set up for a "Pentium class". Good morning all. I am Martin Devon, the IT Consultant at Stonar School in Wiltshire. (For the above, read, I am Head of IT, but in order to be able to take an independent line I am not prepared to be an employee as such). At the moment we use Linux <SMALL> but it is not SuSE at the moment </SMALL> on a Dell 2400 server, specifically for the Navaho Internet Suite, which provides all our Web/Proxy/Webmail services and is highly reliable. I am vehemently anti-PC in education, believing that the proliferation of Windows and Office in particular in the last 2 or 3 years has led to a increase in flashy presentations but a parallel loss both of precision and understanding of the principles, contrary to the intentions of the examination boards. (That may perhaps start some discussion :) We have a switched fibre-optic network of 90-odd StrongArm RiscPCs which do absolutely everything (including all the school admin) and are provided on a basis of about 1:4 in this boarding/day school of about 350 girls. It is very successful with some 63,000 coursework files on the net as I write. Here lies our one weakness: although at least as good as other places' NT servers in terms of stability etc, the RiscPC based servers are limited in their network throughput. My expectation of Linux is that we shall be able to run a fast dedicated server of the highest reliability - quite a consideration in a 24/7/365 organisation. Regards to all -- Martin

The problem with a threaded page is it takes so long to read your way through (well the ones I hve come across do), with e-mails simply arrow down to the next. With perhaps 200 a day the least time it takes to scan through the better. Hi, Can anyone help, Okay, I've had SAX with my SuSE, but I can's see out of any windows have I gone blind? When I try to start KDE, I get several error messages and then reports that some packages have not been installed (sorry didn't write down the errors - will do later, but the machine is off as we are fixing BBCs (yes you read me right!) and need loads of sockets!) Hello I am an IT Tech at a school which has just gone over to Macs from acorns. I am also a member of the UKUUG ( United Kingdom Unix User Group). My task is to oversee the setting up of a "Schools Focus" group. The idea is to get schools to adopt Open Source software. The advantage to schools is probably obvious to you all. For UKP 30 you save the cost of NT and the license fees and have good stable servers. I am tasked with designing a web page to be added to the UKUUGs web site. See www.ukuug.org . Web page design is not my forte but I have played with unix/linux for a while. This is to act as a place for links to useful or interesting sites. It should be polished and put in place by our webmaster in a week or two. Why thank you kindly stranger! The nice thing is the max bandwidth used is only 2.8% peak Rx & 1.25% peak Tx, both bandwidths usually sit below 0.1%! (no video conferencing yet) We use an EXTREME switch at one end and an Ovislink at the other end with servers sitting at each end. A SuSE server too once I get a few mins (hours?) Hi Im Dave Marshall and I have purchased a copy of LInux primarily to familarise myself with it as the school I am at is not one for change, in fact they dont even want to keep up with the current times. Unfortunatley I do not have any say it what occurs or takes place, Im working on that at the moment. There are a couple of "Things" I am hoping to achieve in the near future, and would appreciate any foreknowledge of matters regarding. 1. We are standardised on D-Link DFE-530TX NIC's (10/100Mbps, PCI) Are they actually supported under SuSE 6.3, or am I going to have to kludge the SCO drivers to suit (or find someone more competent than I)? 2. I intend to try SuSE on systems with the Evergreen (MX Pro) upgrade (original AMD chips are long-dead)- they are aught to work with the recent kernel revs., but are there any long-term issues I might like to know about? 3. We have a number of slim-line systems (486) with restricted resources (small HDD and tight memory limits - 30pin simm, to 16MB max.) I want to run Linux on these, but cannot fit a sensible set of parts in them - is there any thin-client software which would allow these (or even some ANCIENT 386 nimbuses) to run as graphics terminals a-la Citrix (Winframe)? oops.... Thanks. Now that I am logged on using the same user name on both networks all is well. Now of to try more adventures on my new toy. How I setup SuSE to use Samba so that I could use it on my RM Connects network. before I did this I already had suse talking to NT so the networking/internet side had been taken care of. 1) downloaded samba from www.samba.org 2) installed samba using YaST 3) restarted both networks. Now I could see that I had a new domain in my network. and the Linux box was there in it. Excellent. I tried access the shared resources that I could see were available on the Linux box. But the stupid thing wanted a password. I only have 3 uses on Linux and none of there passwords would work. 4) to resolve this problem I thought that if I changed the domain info in smb.conf I would then get access to these files. wrong. 5) To gain access to the shared resources on the machine your windows logon name must match a Linux one (inc. password). Re your P75: Our old kit was Tiny, too. Yes, they have (in the past) fibbed about the processors - the AMD substitute was actually better than the Pentium spec, so no complaints there. Don't bother trying to remove the heatsink - Tiny used to use heatsink-glue on their P5/AMD5 systems! I'm pleased to hear that SuSE runs on these machines, as they will probably be our first candidates for permanent Linux installation. I envy you your 1Gig pipe. I have designed and just installed phase one of a new Voice and Data network on one side of our campus, amongst other groovy stuff we have a 1Gig backbone. I recommended LINUX boxes for our networking/e-mail and proxy server. But my betters purchased an RM system comprising two NT PIII 500 servers (every thing ran just fine from one P166 Novel box before!) But we want to set up our own proxy server and run Unixy stuff available from the UNIs and I just want to play (if the truth be known) By the way I'm not slagging NT or RM, so lets keep it clean! :-) I have rooted out an old P75 Intel machine (LINUX tells me it's an AMD! is this a bug or has TINY been fibbing? I haven't removed the heatsink to see) Installation was uneventful and took about an hour. Service from SuSE so far has been very efficient. I spoke to soon......... I can now see the server in my domain but when I try to access it, it requires a password. I don't know what pass word to give it. I have tried root and user password. There must be a passwords list some place that needs updating. Any one got any ideas as to were this is or how to do it. Hi! This is Paul Ellison, ICT Manager for Edgehill College in Bideford. We are a secondary school with a network of systems running various incarnations of Windows (ugh!) on an NT4 server. We (I)hope that we will be able to completely go over to Linux by the end of the next academic year. In the mean-time, one of my own systems is quietly running Linux in the corner - currently RedHat 6.0, but as soon as the new hard-drive goes in, so will SuSE 6.3. I am a relative new-comer to Linux, and my impressions so far have ranged from "hmm, interesting" to "Whoopee!!" - all I have to do now is spend a year getting to be competent with it, planning a network roll-out (without losing anyone's files) and convincing the Head that it will be a "good thing". I have just installed Linux to dual boot with Win98 on my home machine. The install was more starightforward than I was expecting. It boots OK. I have 1 error message (starting syslog service startproc: signal catched /usr/sbin/syslogd: segmentation fault) which doesn't tell me very much at present. Hello everyone, I don't know how experience all of you are (I am not experienced, so keep it nice and easy) so I will ask a question that someone will know the answer to I hope. My Suse network and NT network can and do talk to each other. I would now like to know if it is possible to do drive mapping between the two systems. I have a dir of files on NT that I would like to have mapped so that suse could pick them up and edit them. Any Ideas. James
